Well Steve Vai was in Frank Zappa...if I remember right.
I think he played for David Lee Roth's solo stuff too. IIRC Vai's one of those Joe Satriani students, many of which became phenomenal guitarists.

Django Reinhardt > Steve Vagina

I really can't imagine why you spend so much energy on hating one man. Did he sexually reject you or what?

Anyway, my Top Ten:

01 The Beatles

02 RAMONES

03 The Cure

04 Stray Cats / Brian Setzer

05 Dead Kennedys (WITH! Jello Biafra)

06 Desmond Dekker

07 The Specials

08 Chuck Berry

09 Pink Floyd

10 Misfits

Alec, you haven't been spanked lately?

Actually I am enjoying this thread. Usually these posts are nothing but a who's who of Classic Rock. Nice to see more diversity.

As for me? Got to think about that.
Frank Zappa... don't you eat that yellow snow!
Cool.

No, seriously.

Hendrix is great. I think Gilmour is over-rated; not that he's not a good guitarist, just that without Pink Floyd he's not much. Knopfler I don't really know, I've only heard a few Dire Straits songs but his playing didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary.

But consider this; Django only used two fingers. His third and fourth were fused together in a fire, had to be surgically seperated, and were near useless and couldn't be used for playing. Listen to his music, which is amazing enough as it is, with that in mind and then say he isn't the greatest guitarist that ever lived.

Why I spend so much energy on hating Steve Vagina? Duder, these things don't cost good ol' wishy-washy alec any energy. They cost me maybe a couple of seconds. Watch and learn:

[time: 9:14:21]

Django Reinhardt > Jimi Hendrix > my pet canary > my sphincter after a bad curry > David Gilmour > Mark Knopfler > Little Annie > Steve Vagina
[time: 9:14:48]

27 seconds for a brainfart like that ain't too bad, now is it? One can hardly call that a lot of energy, right? And still, the message got delivered! I'm brilliant, I know, I know.

Hey, by the way: did you know that Steve Vagina has got a wart on his dick that plays the guitar better then himself? I kid not. The wart is called Brian Setzer and it has got two teeny-weeny little arms and one left foot! It's a fact.

Well, maybe.

You're kidding, right? Mark Knopfler is a magnificent musician. What is there not to like about Dire Straits or his solo stuff.

On the topic of great guitarists; Chet Atkins, anyone? Not to mention Tommy Emmanuel, probably the greatest guitarist of his style alive today.

Also:
Allman Brothers Band
Blind Willie McTell
The Clash
Creedance Clearwater Revival
Frank Zappa
Dire Straits
Gary Moore
Grateful Dead
J.J. Cale
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Muddy Waters
Pink Floyd
Presidents of The United States Of America
Slava Grigorian
Sonny Boy Williamson
Stevie Vai
Tab Benoit
TISM

There's no way you can limit a subject like this to 10 acts.

Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers. Simple reason is that this is the most played album I have. This stuff rocks.

Need to think about the others.
