Top 5 Gaming Companies

Montez

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
A little twist on the "Top Ten Games" topic, and one that's a little more difficult to do - what are your top 5 gaming companies? Doesn't matter if they are developers, publishers or a combination of the two. Here's mine:

1) Interplay. They went to shit after the turn of the century, but they are responsible for making or publishing too many of my favorite games over nearly my entire life to not put them at number 1: Bard's Tale, Wasteland, Neuromancer, Battlechess, Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape, Freespace 2, and more that don't come immediately to mind. The list of games they made or published that I enjoyed but wouldn't classify as favorites is probably 5x as long.

2) Sierra. King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, Quest For Glory, Gabriel Knight, Manhunter, not to mention all the games that they published. They're pretty much just a "name brand" now more than an actual company but like Interplay they pretty much dominated my gaming world growing up so they're pretty high on my list.

3) Troika. Short lived and couldn't keep themselves afloat, but the three games they did make are some of my favorite RPG's ever: Arcanum, Temple Of Elemental Evil, and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. I wish that I didn't have to imagine what else they could have done if they had stayed together.

4) Looking Glass Studios. I only know of them through four games, but they are some of the best games ever made in my opinion: Thief 1 and 2 and System Shock 1 and 2.

5) LucasArts. I didn't get to play any of their games until years after their release due to only using Apple computers for most of my life, but the gameplay, humor and stories in their adventure games holds up against any modern game. Grim Fandango, the Monkey Island series, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken, Full Throttle, Loom and Sam & Max. I'd place them higher but adventure games don't have much replay value for me, so LucasArts has to lose out.

I won't list them in any particular order of preference (I just can't decide ). Interplay/Black Isle won't be mentioned as it is pretty much a given and already occupies the top of the Hall of Fame:

- SIERRA Entertainment: Pretty much the same reasons as Montez. Their adventure games series are all-time favourites. Quest for Glory 5 was the first game I pre-ordered online

- Looking Glass Studios: Again, the same as Montez. THIEF is one of the greatest games I've had the pleasure of playing, and still damn superior to modern "stealth games" like Splinter Cell IMHO.

- Lucasfilm/Lucasarts: Mainly for their incredible adventure games, as well as for the greatness that is TIE FIGHTER.

- Apogee/3D Realms: 2 words - DUKE NUKEM! Even though I also enjoyed the entire Commander Keen series and Death Rally immensely.

- Bethesda Softworks: Mainly for introducing the (bugged) incredible greatness that is DAGGERFALL into my gaming life. I'm willing to forgive what they do/did afterwards simply because Daggerfall ruled so much...

Muahahahaa. Battlechess, that brings back memories. That was a great game.

Other than that, I'd say that this is mine:

1) Interplay. Fallout, Fallout 2 and Planescape: Torment are probably the games that cost me most of my life and have been undoubtedly some of the best I've ever played. I still have yet to play the classics of Wasteland and Neuromancer, so I suppose that would only make them better.

2) Troika. Placing Fallout on their list wouldn't be entirely mistaken, but not really fair either. But Arcanum and Vampire: Bloodlines make up for that. A company that sadly suffered from the poor technical quality of the products they delivered, and the state of the gaming industry.

3) Atari. With pong and the Atari game systems they were one of the pioneers of the genre, and have made some great games.

4) Lucasarts. Monkey's Island, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango did it for me.

5) id Software. Commander Keen and Doom rocked.

Honourable mentions:
Nintendo, although I haven't experienced them much, they were one of the pioneers of video gaming, and one of the all-time greats. Perhaps one of the companies more inclined to innovate as well.

The Open Source community. With Rogue, Hack and NetHack they have created an entire genre that still persists today, nethack is probably the most popular of its direct descendants, while all of the dungeon crawlers claiming to be RPGs are its more distant descendants.

1) Microprose

2) Lucas Arts

3) Bullfrog

4) Interplay

5) Sierra (specifically, Dynamix and Yosemite Entertainment)

Honorable mentions:

6) Blizzard
7) Origin
8) Firaxis
9) Maxis
10) Westwood
11) Looking Glass
12) Gremlin Interactive
13) Cryo
14) Piranha Bytes
15) Spiderweb Software
16) Blue Byte

1) Interplay: For reasons above.

2) TTLG/Irrational

3) Valve: They haven't ventured into anything apart from Half-Life, however both Half-Life 2 and Half-Life are good games so they haven't made a turd out of it yet.

4)id Software: They've been rehashing the same game for a long time now, I don't think there's an ounce of originality in design left in the company. Despite that however id Software are without a doubt one of the most influential developers around, and they've made some crackers in their time, from the Commander Keen series through to Quake.

5) I'll go with LucasArts.

1) Maxis (for SimCity games not the Sims)

2) Interplay

3) Sierra

4) Infogrames Interactive? (or whatever they are now)

5) Atari baby, yeah!

1 TROIKA
Arcanum - need I say more? The best game ever made, my all-time favourite RPG, brutally destroyed by piracy and lots of bugs (that strangely enough never bothered me in any way and were mostly if not completely solved with the 1074 patch). It's a pity Greyhawk: Temple Of Elemental Evil was so extremely buggy, though. It took like what? Three or four patches to make it kinda sorta work? That's not good. And although I have a copy, I have yet to play Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, because my computer can't handle it. It's a shame it had to die after only three games. One can only wonder what they would've come up with next.

2 INTERPLAY
Fallout, Fallout 2 - pfft... need I say more? I think not.

3 MICROSOFT
Age Of Empires 2. The amount of time I 'wasted' on this game and its expansion is enormous. Still, I never played another RTS that gave me the same amount of fun and pleasure as this one did. AOE 2 is easy to learn, hard to master, but always fun and addictive as hell. Plus, it shows that 3D graphics are not necessary at all if the gameplay is simply magnificent.

4 SIERRA
For all their Quest series. Simply brilliant stuff.

5 MICROPROSE
X-Com baby!

I'll try to limit my list to companies that still exist, still make great games and are still economically successful and widely known.

...

Okay, fuck that. I got nothing.

Only ones I would add would be

SSI : Panzer General series, Steel Panthers, many of the Close Comabt games, Silent Hunter series, Illyushin the list goes on and on. By far the powerhouse of historical strategy and simulations games. Too bad

Firaxis : I still play Alpha Centauri and Gettysburg to this day.

Personally, no gamming company is in my top 5. Among the best though:

Nintendo (YES nintendo, they made some damn good games. Metriod ayone?)
Blizzard (up to when the released 1.10 for diablo 2, star/warcraft awesome as well.)
Sony's in house crew ?Polyphonic studios??? (responsible for Gran turismo, greatest racing game evar.)
Id software ruled, up to quake 3, after that down the toilet.
Sega owns the platformer area. Sonic 1-3 + sonic and knuckles. Pure awesome in a cart.

No gamming company today deserves top 5 because they all buy into market trends and sell poorly created products. Not to mention their customer support and lack of bug fixes (EA anyone?).

0.02$

Edit: almost forgot sega!

YES, thank you Quanium. While I agree with a great deal of the other companies listed (firaxis, interplay, troika) I think Nintendo deserves a mentioning as well, if even just for Miyamoto. Donkey kong, Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Smash Brothers. Can't forget my console fix :).

Troika

Looking Glass

Lucas Arts

Rockstar Games

Interplay

Also: Red Storm, Firaxis, Id, and others I can't think of right now...

Interplay - Fallout, Planescape Tourment.

Blizzard - Hate it or love it. Starcraft is still my all time favorite RTS.

Firaxis - Turn-based gaming to its best.

id - The one who keeps pushing the technology.

Westwood - C&C series. Too bad EA killed them all.

How? Half life 2 is a better engine than doom 3. Half life 2 would be my engine of choice if I was to make an fps game.

My top ones have already been said, but one has been left out that definitely needs a mention.

Cavedog Entertainment - Total Annihilation and its expansion packs. (Probably one of the best strategy games in my opinion.)

I played Total Annihilation Kingdoms as well, but meh, not really that great.

id has quite a bit more history than just Doom 3, you realize.

Hmm... my list is something like (not in any real order):

Looking Glass
Interplay
Troika
LucasArts
Maxis

Yes! Total Annihilation is an awesome game as well.

As for ID I realize they have a long history of great games. They lost though, doom 3 was too little too late. Half life 2's engine is FAR superior to doom 3. Physics.Nuff said.

Guys, don't forget that Id software, when a new engine is published, releases the old one for free to the public. That's a great opportunity for small companies and modding teams. Not every developer in the market does that...

OSI

sierra

ID

SSI

nintendo

my criteria for the list was most games enjoyed by me.

interplay didnt make list because only having 2 games isnt enough.

ssi is on the list for the gold box games.
