Not sure how you get that. Japanese, as a spoken language, really has little in common with chinese other than some borrowed words. Anyone who is even marginally familiar with Japanese should be able to tell it apart from either Mandarin or Cantonese easily. As far as it sounding "harsh," well... that's not really inherent to the language, I don't think. Just listen to an exuberant female speak it. It's mostly that native male speakers seem to often speak the language in a kind of low, guttural, growl-y manner.
