Tycho of Penny Arcade jots down his thoughts on Fallout 3

The infamous Tycho of the PA duo jotted down his thoughts on the recent Fallout 3 developments to go along with their latest comic:
As far as whether or not I think the glory days of Fallout are back, would ever be back, that is not something I expect out of this new series - and that's not an insult. The original games strike me as such oddities that I have a hard time believing they ever existed, even in retrospect. I think of Fallout as a wonderful accident of history, not some endlessly refreshed fountain, I don't believe that The Fallout Spirit projects from some eternal, unsullied coordinate in the heart of man. The SPECIAL system, that old warhorse, and the post apocalyptic yet somehow naive world they baked at Black Isle is to me emblematic of a different age of PC game development, epitomized in Planescape - and it's no coincidence that both of these games emerged from the same development house.
Link: rant on Penny Arcade

I specially liked the last paragraph, which unfortunately we all know is true... :(

Action RPGs took the day at the last E3, just as stylish, ersatz Dantes percolated an entire generation of leaping action stars the year prior. When I played Fallout, and its inheritor, initiating combat and managing my inventory, did I enjoy it enough? Did I enjoy it as though the preconditions for such entertainments were disappearing? There was something precious and indiosyncratic about PC roleplaying games that I do not currently detect. We scions of that heritage are aware of the void.

I have a feeling that FO3's new master is in for a rude awakening if they think they can do whatever they want with Fallout and still actualy make money.

They don't mean you, they mean the guy that wrote that thingy ;)

4too does have a wonderfull way with words though :D

What I love about PA

Is that they say what they want.

In a world that is becoming ever increasingly tied down by financial marionette handlers it is refreshing that they say what they want about the actions of the developers and not suck them off like so much of the press.

I just hope they never get corrupted...

He writes like an insane cross of the narrator from 1984 and VERY drunk Pablo Neruda.

*edit*Nothing is wrong with his writing. Its just as crazy as Dali.

I don't what you people are talking about. I don't see anything wrong with his writing.

I especially liked this line:
Could the High Council of Fallout Forum Purists deliver the sequel they always dreamed of? I'm curious.

sad thing is, he's right about the fallouts and torment probably being an anomaly in the space-time continuum. Either that or they were signgs there is actually a loving and caring god

ahhh that would be fun. The designers would come to him with their FPS ideas only to be turned away with a "Shut the fuck up morons!"

That would be fun...th egame would start by asking "Would you like to play Fallout3 as a FPS?" and by answering yes, it would delete your HD and tell you that it's what stupid morons deserve.

Nah, I'd have target practice with my arbalest, to reinforce the actual roleplaying experience of having said something completely stupid to a captain of the guard. After a few developers are left using the wall as a hard surface to write upon because a bolt has their foot firmly to the floor, then I think the message would get across for anyone else who wants to call themselves a designer.

Just as a warning shot, mind you.
 8)
