Tyrian

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
Yes I have another high-quality freeware title to show you. Yes it is a shooter, but don't worry. This one is western made, but like Touhou is very innovative in well-done and original ways.

It's a shooter with a spaceship and lots of little enemies and big bosses. What makes it different is that instead of scoring points and collecting power-ups you earn money for enemies defeated and special items collected then spend it in between missions. There's some good customization with weapons. You have many choices between various front guns, rear guns, side guns, as well as generator, shield, and of course ship choice. Now with generator, shield, and ship the more expensive the better, but with weapons they all cost about the same, but fire in many different patterns and speeds making for a lot of experimenting in ship design.

It's quite long...it should take at least four hours to play through. There are many stages and quite a few where you get to choose a mission. There is a somewhat developed setting and story though it's just enough to hold the game together (I will admit the character portraits are really well-done and look like they come from something other than a shooter). Also the music is another high point in the game. I hope you'll give it a try.

So I guy who had a prominent position making F3 at one point worked on Tyrian? I'm supremely amazed you remember something so small like that Per.

Then again you are the writer of the world's largest and most detailed FAQs so I guess it's just natural.

Actually I just searched the board for "tyrian" to see if I had ever mentioned that it was a fun game.

No. Per is actually the conscience of the NMA forums. It knows everything.

Per is an acronym for Protocol Equipment Response.

Found this game a couple of months ago and played it allot. I came across this game by looking for games just like Raptor and I must say that Tyrian is the better one.

Anyone else knows games like this? I really enjoy all those massive power ups once in awhile.

Also I put Tyrian on my PSP and must say it runs flawless.

I remember this game from years ago, back when I had a (now archaic) Acer desktop computer. This was a demo-game that came with it. Freaking loved it. For a shooter, the customizations were awesome. Then again, I was probably around ten years old or younger at the time. But still, it stuck with me through the years until now obviously.

(Am 24 now, btw.)

Well , I've been playing Tyrian2k since I was 8. It's awesowe, I still run it sometimes :)
