The Vault Dweller
always looking for water.
Yes I have another high-quality freeware title to show you. Yes it is a shooter, but don't worry. This one is western made, but like Touhou is very innovative in well-done and original ways.
It's a shooter with a spaceship and lots of little enemies and big bosses. What makes it different is that instead of scoring points and collecting power-ups you earn money for enemies defeated and special items collected then spend it in between missions. There's some good customization with weapons. You have many choices between various front guns, rear guns, side guns, as well as generator, shield, and of course ship choice. Now with generator, shield, and ship the more expensive the better, but with weapons they all cost about the same, but fire in many different patterns and speeds making for a lot of experimenting in ship design.
It's quite long...it should take at least four hours to play through. There are many stages and quite a few where you get to choose a mission. There is a somewhat developed setting and story though it's just enough to hold the game together (I will admit the character portraits are really well-done and look like they come from something other than a shooter). Also the music is another high point in the game. I hope you'll give it a try.
Obligatory gameplay video:
