Underrated classic games

One of my favorite topics, unfortunately not a lot of titles want to come to mind right now despite that I love talking about obscure and forgotten games that deserve more attention.
But I will try my best and perhaps be able to add some more titles to my own entry.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Manhattan Missions:
Don't let the name of a licensed title scare you off, this is actually a pretty decent little game that should even entertain non TMNT fans (though being familiar with the franchise does help)
Though released during the franchise's largest public awareness moment in the late 80s/early 90s (when the old cartoon was still airing and the the market was overflowed with everything with a TMNT image on it), this title unlike most fo the other games such as on the NES, and ports of the Arcade game (which outside the NES version all sucked) was an original for PC release that took more inspiration of the original Mirage comic that was intended for older readers though it does have some elements from the cartoon and the first movie in it as well. (mostly characters)

It is a side scrolling platform-fighting game in which the player alone or together with a fellow player must visit a number of locations in order to deal with local gang members, the maffia, mutants, aliens, and members of the Foot Clan in order to prevent the ninja master and crime lord the Shredder from taking over Manhattan Island.

Perhaps controls may have been a bit complicated for its time (the jump mechanism can definitely be a bit frustrating but it is not used much) but with the coming of DOSbox and game controllers it can finally be played as it was intended.
Only issues I may have outside the jumping is that I find it a shame that I can not map the character selection button, the Pause button, and the Esc button to the controller.

I rediscovered this title a few months back. I knew the game from the advertisement of an old PC magazine but did not think much of it (at the time most action games on the PC were average).
But once I found out how to configure its sound and control properly this was actually quite a nice little game.

Highlight on the 'small', this game is actually not that big, despite having an ingame time limit in which it must be completed a game in general should be able to finish it within an hour.
But this is one of those titles you don't mind playing and finishing more than just once, perhaps you want to try to finish the game faster than the previous session or impose some kind of handicap on yourself like not training the characters to much to increase their strength and health.

I think it is excellent when you have an hour to kill or so and are not in the mood for something more complex.

Anyone here who has heard of Zombie Wars?

Spellcross: The Last Battle; 1997 Cauldron
Slovak turn-based strategy game with interesting mechanics and insane difficulty.

Original War; 2001 Altar Interactive
Czech sci-fi RTS with some RPG-lite mechanics and top-notch graphics.

Brany Skeldalu; 1998 Napoleon Games
Czech turn-based dungeon crawler with pretty good mechanics, including party splitting and whatnot. Hard and tricky puzzles! Unfortunately the only English translation I'm aware of is half-arsed unofficial attempt using Google translator, so bad luck unless you know Czech language.

For me, I'd have to say one of the most underrated games was Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage on the N64. The game had turn based combat, permadeath, a massive world filled with all kinds of hidden treasures and areas, and the story--while not perfect--was the kind of high-stakes fantasy that I felt really pulls the player in. You start off as a Squire searching for a missing farmer in the woods; you fight giant rats and bats, meet one of the games separate races, find a spirit that turns out to be one of the most important plot-points in the game, while also being subtly introduced to the games main villains. There are several cities, cultures, and people for you to explore and interact with, and the fanbase--while relatively quite these days--is still active over at Gamefaqs.

If I'm being completely honest here, the game's story isn't the most original thing ever; you get poisoned, set off the find a cure, and get swept up in the coming war with the forces of Chaos. What makes it shine is the character interactions and the world-space; it was one of the first games I've played where you choose most of your characters responses, where what you say impacts the party members opinion of you, and though the plot line may seem generic it was incredibly well written, and at times insanely difficult.

I can't give the game the credit it rightfully deserves, and if I try I'll only make it sound less impressive than it actually is. Few people have played, fewer still remember it even exists, but to those who loved it--like myself--the game will always hold a special place. If you have time, I highly recommend that you give the game a shot; if you enjoy it, it will be one of those games that stays with you forever.

I just thought of another two: Battle for Middle-Earth 1 & 2. Very solid movie tie-in RTS games.

1:

2 (can't find a Battle for Middle-Earth 2 video without commentary):

The Earth 21xx games are also quite underrated in my opinion. Solid RTS games from Poland. Earth 2140 suffers heavily from its botched Windows port (because it fucks with the AI), but the game is enjoyable none the less. The gameplay is somewhere between C&C and Starcraft, I'd say. Sadly, the game has no skirmish.
Earth 2150 then was one of the first RTS games to use a 3D engine, and it's definitely a good game.
Speaking of early 3D RTS games, Emperor: Battle for Dune is also a pretty good game that kinda got lost in time.

I dunno I still like the classic pokemon games but I do think they get alot of praise but rightly so. They more praise gba version of the games. But i dunoo I like the older Gameboy colour pokemons.

I also like think some of the nes games ; Donkey kong is better cool and also Dr mario. Most people have't played those too as much but there pretty cool. Also the Ice climber game.

Kingpin: Life of Crime.
It came at an unfortunate time and got most of its success from its intense violence and profanity, but at its core it is still a solid shooter with some nice additional mechanics like "friendly" NPCs and peaceful hub areas where you basically get quests and can hire additional gang members. You get three options when talking to NPCs, so it's basically like Fallout 4 in that regard.
The art direction of the game was really damn good.
Jaws unleashed.

These two were actually so good they're underrated IMO as well. Many games on this thread I haven't played. Kingpin also had a good soundtrack.

What were you trying to say here? That's the thread topic.

Just agreeing that those two were, indeed, underrated. Two thumbs up for mentioning those two. :salute:

Anyhoo, a classic game that's underrated, I'd say that Close Combat 5 is definitely one especially with all the fan made mods made for it.
