Unigine CEO offers free license for Wasteland 2

I might be wrong...but I thought Wasteland 2 wont be making any profit, every dollar will be thrown into the development, with one or two drug fueled parties on the side in for motivation.

The pledged money will go into development but once the game is completed it will go on sale as any other game and generate profit as usual. A profit that potentially/hopefully could lead to Wasteland 3.

To clarify a bit, the offer is only for an engine license free. inXile wants both a source code seat and continued support throughout development, which they would have to pay for. They're not just going to jump on this offer because "it's free", they want a solution that works.

Also hasn't BF already said he's had interest from Publishers since the kickstarter and has turned them down? So any publisher-style investment - cash for influence - I hope he'd decline.

I think the most serious offer was from a company that wanted to handle PR for a cut of the profits, which is actually not that bad an offer, since PR is a huge part of the budget for most videogaming projects.

Fargo just so happens not to be interested in PR :P

If someone wants to invest million(s) for a cut of the profits, that would be fine with me...as long as they have no say over the game's design and development.

Once the game is done it'll be sold like any other. That will be the profit.

Yeah, this. If anything, the game is practically bound to make a profit because there's no need to cover the development expenses first with sales.

I don't think a PR Company who is used to controlling literally every word you say, could handle a project like Wasteland 2 if the development process is going to be open minecraft style.

As I see it, there are at least a few factors regarding the engine and development costs:

engine itself + modifications to the engine (IIRC Brian wanted to have seamless transition between world and combat environment, which might be tricky for level based engines) + content creation + porting to other platforms

So a free engine with limited tools might be actually a worse choice in the end than an expensive one. I wonder what kind of tools Obsidian has to offer.

Another thing is bugfixing and support after the game's release. I hope it sells really well :)

Amyway, I trust Brian in this and hope he will make the best decision for the project given the budget he has (which is really sweet).

My 2 cents. And hello everybody :)

Brian Fargo has pledged 5% of profits to kick-forward (which inXile formed?) so he expects there to be profits....

There seems to be a misunderstanding here. One of our friends at fallout.ru checked with Unigine Corp's boss Den Shergin and the latter said that the offer did include source code and support. (Although I wish the question specifically mentioned FREE access to source code and support.)

He didn't offer free access to source code and support, Shergin doesn't say otherwise, and they're negotiating about the cost of that now (so it's in the offer they're talking about now, since inXile wasn't interested in just an engine license). Fargo very clearly and explicitly told me the source code and support were not being offered free. If something changed since then, fine, but I doubt it, support throughout development costs money to Unigine Corp, and source code seats aren't cheap either.
