Vehicles in Fallout 3?

I think that the main problem with cars in F2 was that they would be at least 164 years old.
In a desert environment like the American Southwest, cars from the 30's are able to survive to this day without so much as a small rust spot. Thank lack of moisture for that. With the world of Fallout being extra-crispy, there's even more chance of a car being in perfectly driveable shape, even after 164 years. Though, it wouldn't be quite like Los Angeles on a weekday, there'd still be plenty of vehicles outside of the blast radius of nukes to not get fried from EMP.

But what fuel would they use and considering they higwayman run on energy cell's ware owned by people or organisations who could either afford them or recharge them they would be pity ineffective as a fuel source. In the next fallout I would like to see some steam powered and animal powered modes of transport.

The car was originally going to be powered by fusion or fission or something nifty and
nuclear (something that would allow us not to have to worry about running out of gas)
and those big tanks in the back were representative of this big bulky power-source that
was bolted on to the back of a ’57 Chevy.

We had thought, at one starry-eyed point, that the car would be something that you could
upgrade with more speed, armor, weapons, etc. and that it could be a more important part
of the game—well, the engine and programmer tasking weren’t up to the idea of having a
moving vehicle (madness, I know ;) in the game so all of that went out the window. The
power source was replaced by a much more mundane 22 cubic feet of cargo-space (more
than any non-wagon vehicle in its class!).

So basically, the Highwayman's powerplant was downsized in order to meet with
People’s State of California emissions standards. It’s often the case that a prototype car
isn’t exactly the same when it goes into production. ;)

So, the Highwayman was intended to be powered with it's own power plant. I suspect that they removed it for balance reasons.
There's no reason to not bring back the idea. After all Power Armor doesn't need recharging every x steps...

I think what would be neat is if you got a quest to restore a car during which you salvage a working reactor from an otherwised trashed Power Armour and take it to be installed on the car as it's own power source.

Cars from before the late 70s shouldn't be affected at all by an EMP of any magnitude (at least as far as running goes). The EMP should only affect advanced electronics not seen in vehicles until the late 70s. Thus a car that old would have even 1 less problem there. Although this is fallout here, retro futuristic cars, who knows...

What about horses? Is there a reason they were never implemented?

Yeah, I was thinking of vehicles right before the Great War probably having luxuries that we have today, but I should have clarified. :D
