Minor news time: IMDb's Fallout 3 page has been updated with a fourth voice actor, namely Heather Marie Marsden in the role of Sarah Lyons. Since July the game has also been listed as "completed" (but not "released") rather than in "post-production", but who knows what kind of crazy definitions they use.

Thanks to Ausir.

Edit: With the exceptions of Liam Neeson and Ron Perlman. They're awesome and anything is better with them in it.

So, uh, it's not ok to hire expensive voice actors unless it's people you like?

In my view, unless you're looking for a distinctive voice (Perlman) it's generally better to just look for professional voice actors, with or without a simultaneous career in films/tv.

I can't believe how much you're simply reaching to find something to hate, and can't even find the smarts to have any consistency about it. I can't believe how much you guys keep whining about it, seriously, who cares? You can just turn off the voice-over effect, it's completely optional. And even if it wasn't JUST GET A LIFE. You're so aggravating!!!!!!111eleventy

Let me show you this graph.

As you can see, expensive voice actors lead to sales, ergo expensive voice actors fit in perfectly with Fallout's core setting.

Dumass

It's a long day and there's nothing to talk about. New news about Fallout 3 is depressing.

Sometimes I wish that it just never existed..

We don't actually know how much they paid each actor. Neeson is possibly over the top, but McDowell could have appeared in the first two games without anyone batting an eyelid.

Oh snap

And McDowell is a talended voice actor with good track record, unlike Neeson.

Also, the more unique voice actors for characters as opposed to generic ones, the better. Although voice actors people like Charlie Adler or Jim Cummings could probably voice half of the cast without you noticing that it's the same guy.

I just hope to god they don't use that goddamn secretary or whoever it was that voiced all the female elves in morrowind and oblivion.

I definitely agree with that. McDowell's done great in his little role in Metalocalypse.

Good point, though professional voice actors are *supposed* to mix it up, so you know you're listening to "The Vault Dweller" rather than Joey McSchmoington, whose character in other games sound suspiciously like the characters in FO3.

Like Charlie Adler, who, aside from being Harold from Fallout, was also e.g. the entire main cast of Cow and Chicken.

hahahahaha... so I sense just a slight bit of sarcasm bled over from the house thread?

p.s. the graph was a nice touch.

I've never heard of her (though she does look vaguely familiar) but I notice that she has no voice acting experience. I just don't get why companies (and I'm assuming some customers) love having big name actors who don't know how to voice act voice act in games. I'd just like to seem them release their VA staff list so that we can actually see who they hired that has experience in the field or does it as a profession. That said, Perlman and McDowell have experience and were good choices. They did say that they have 30 VAs, right? If that's the case it's too early to call it one way or another but I'd think that you could hire a few more professional VAs with the money put into Neeson and this chick. All in all, voice acting could be one of the high points of the game if they really are as determined as they say they are to avoid another Oblivion in this regard.

Charlie Adler aka The Red Guy. The best cartoon character ever created, in my opinion. He did great job in Fallout.

Wolf Tracer's Dinosaur Island (2004) (voice) .... Troye

Still not much experience, but not "no experience".

Oops, my bad. Missed that one I guess.

Is that an acronym, or what? I guess it doesn't matter, since they probably didn't spend more than a third of 5% on it.

There is a very simple reason to use Neeson, and that is because he was in Star Wars which is sc-fi and geeky kind of like fallout, so by using Neeson they are trying to tap into the star wars nerd market. It was also suggested to use William Shatner but everyone decided that trekies are so nerdy that they are in fact beat up by regular nerds.
