Brian Fargo has posted another piece of art to twitter, this time "a little sneak look at one of the enemy portraits".

So I am guessing the Enemy Portraits won't have little animations and stuff.

Dunno. Is this ingame or concept art? He doesn't say.

Also, the inspiration, obviously:

Never played Wasteland 1, can you explain where and how these portraits will be used ?

Yeah, I thought about that dog too, especially because Brian had it on this reference website.

Image itself looks cool. I don't think animations in there are needed, as you have a pure focus on the true ingame critter now and not the portrait anymore. Just remember Arcanum, which had portraits for critters as well. Usually you see them, but don't care about it, as you just hoover over them briefly.

Well, doing animations with/for artworks could be difficult. The easiest way would be like cut-out animations.

I'd guess that Wasteland 1 had animated portraits because that was one of the places in the game they could show off some detail, in those days.

Today it would be a lot of effort, for very little pay off, considering the game itself will be very detailed. It's not like we'll be battling sprites made out of 8-bit color.

Wasteland 1 showed you a portrait of your enemy (animated, but lot of recycling there) while going through a text-based combat segment.

No idea how Wasteland 2 will use it.

Looks interesting. Maybe there really will be some sort of encyclopedia for enemies that you add to as you progress through the game.

I'm really digging it. It reminds me of something, but I can't quite place it.

Apparently mange is a mutant power of the future.

That poor dog probably couldn't bit a stick in two, let alone pose a threat to desert rangers.
SAY NO TO WANTON ANIMAL CRUELTY!

I have a feeling that used to be a person. If you look at the shape of the head it looks more like a human then a dog. Also there's some strange biological goo coming out of the collar.

Icewind Dale perhaps? IWD2?

We had a thread about how awesome the character potraits were for Arcanum, IWD and BG et al. This reminds me of that. No animations is not a big deal but a few variants of awesome art per/ critter would be just amazing. One for initial encounter, one for attacking, one for in groups....

I recommend wobbly eyes. Simple, fun, and technically an animation.
