First time out of the vault

A third option, which is never required, is to type something in – a nod to Wasteland 1’s system.
I'm not sure I get this. Does it mean I can type instead of clicking only? Or does it mean I can type in something that is not on the keywords list and still get the result, as if it was there? And if it's 'never required' - then why is this implemented at all?
Someone clever, please explain it to me
I wonder is this might be used as a means of inserting lots of easter eggs and nods to fans, pop culture, and just anything that doesn't merit full inclusion but would potentially be funny/interesting to people giving Wasteland 2 an exhaustive play though.
If could be as simple as typing the name of a developer and certain NPCs make a joke about him, typing in a sports team or school that is currently in that local and having some reference made. Mentioning old characters from Wasteland or Fallout universe when prompted. Or asking some science nerd to explain how some technology works or some creature would have evolved and then b/c you asked have him go all nerdgasm on you and give a painfully detailed hypothesis that they have an physicist or evolutionary biologist script for them.
I could think of a ton of generic comments that when stated they could program a half dozen NPC to respond, cursing them out, asking for a kiss/sex, telling them leave & never return or I'll kill you, etc...
Nothing that starts a new quest or anything, but something amusing for people to read about on forums and try our on their next play through.
