Well established characters ruined by new material

I had never heard of Felicity Jones before the movie.

Another character ruined by both new iterations and very misguided fandom is Harley Quinn. The very origin of her name is little more than an easter egg that may appear in any new incarnation. The Telltale games even made her be just some Bad Girl ripoff who is only vaguely Harlequin themed for seemingly no reason, and the least we say about the street worker mixed with LOL SO RANDOM Harley from Suicide Squad the best. And there is also the element of making what is essentially a Manson family member a hero or even having her as a role model... It's all fucked.

With a ship, after getting saved by Han Solo from getting blown up by Darth Vader. There is a difference between a character pulling a minor miracle at the end and just being a level 100 Jedi on the first movie for no reason. Also that move single handedly made the main villains seem like a Joke. I still can't help but laugh at Kylo Ren.

Edit: Also being an ace pilot that can pilot a two man ship by herself, fix it by herself, headshot moving targets on her first time using a gun, getting herself out of a prison, understanding Chewbacca, getting offered jobs by everyone and then being selected as the main agent to carry out a super secret mission by an organization she doesn't even belong to.

That's the structure of a bad fanfic. And believe me, having once been a weaboo teenager I know my fair share of bad fanfics.

I still think she is the one to bring balance to the force. It will be shit most likely, but it would be ample story justification.

Wouldn't that be the most cliche thing? Chosen one narratives are kind of looked down upon and wouldn't that also be a repeat of the previous movies? (altho in this case it would be the prequels, which they are trying their darnest to avoid referencing).

The whole cast of Hellsing was ruined by the first tv anime. In the mango they were lunatics with bigger than life personalities, in the tv series they were morose and serious. Morose and serious characters are not bad per se, but that's the last thing a Hellsing adaptation should be like. Would be like if someone adapted Empowered like a Nolan movie.

Most of these movies people seem to blow a hot load about are cliche and trope filled as hell. Your shows you watch, your games you like, your books you read - all shit. Granted Force Awakens was average at best, but it was not the franchise destroyer people make it out to be.

It wasn't franchise destroyer, it did really well and was well received. It was just an Interest destroyer for me.

Another character ruined by an adaptation, Motoko Kusanagi, who got hyper dumbed down into Lady Robocop.

Speaking of which - Robocop.

What did they do to you?

Van Helsing was pretty "Meh" too.

Fuck don't remind me it was PG13. God why? They took the most gory death scene and turned it into garbage.
The recent Robocop was a pile of garbage, but it has one single redeeming scene :

The only moment when the movie showed some kind of quality, but yes, that's pretty much it. And despite the scene being quite good, it still manages to be stupid, since it clearly proves that Robocop is the guy with emotions and shit, and not just a machine wearing his face as a tribute. Which was kind of the point of the first movie, that doubt... and what made it utterly interesting behind all the typical old timey action movie tropes.

"I can feel them, but I can't remember them."

Fine, since no one will say it I will.

Johnny Rico from Starship Troopers
200_s.gif

We all know well and good that the 1st. Starship Troopers movie was absolutely rank with satire and poked all kinds of fun at the fascism/military industrial complex.

But even though Johnny Rico's "character" (The main character completely central to the plot) was pretty much a stone faced doof dry reading lines like there is no tomorrow, the character still had presence in the narrative.

Then we get to Starship Troopers 2, and guess what. No Johnny Rico and a poor attempt at B rated horror, then another movie accept this time Johnny only shows up at the end with some naked people in robo suits to "save the day?"

However while the animated movies to try to restore Mr. Rico back to form it simply isn't enough. What made Johnny so great was the squad dynamic, and the story of a boy becoming a "very heavily armed mobile infantry grunt". There was growth, even love?, and progression in the first movie. However in the later installments they are nothing more than "some horrible thing happened might as well throw Johnny Rico in the mix somewhere because reasons?".

Even though Johnny Rico wasn't the most fleshed out character, I still think he is a badass and deserved much more respect than an eye patch and some cheesy cameo lines.

Also @Walpknut I don't know where you are getting your facts but Godzilla has always been a Japanese generated IP, it was technically stolen and naturalized for the american public. Hell while they were at it they took out all the good scenes that basically pointed to the horror of the monster (bombs).

The most recent Godzilla movie is literally Godzilla going straight back to the source material, and honoring its core message. Japan didn't steal jack, the Americans did.

I don't know where you are getting your reading from because you seem to not have actually read what I wrote properly...

Man of Steel and BvS for the same reason others have issue with JJ abrams Trek movies and thier portrayal of Kirk.

Que the synder fanboys in 3 2 1.....

I wanna say the Power Rangers but those weren't exactly great characters to begin with. Can the campiness of Tokusatsu be considered a charatcer? In any case the new movie was pretty bad and didn't even have the cheese factor to keep it afloat with an overly moody tone in it's place.

Edit: MOAR.

Arkham Knight ruined the Joker by means of over exposure and making him some kind of Infection in it's retarded side plot where Batman turns into the Joker. His characterization as only being scared of being forgotten is stupiud but maybe that is just the fear of the imaginary Joker in Batman's head? I mean this game's story is just retarded in general.

Batgirl in the Killing joke, made into a fawning fangirl who justy wants the Batdick and gets easily overpowered by no name thugs just because they have a boner for her. Whose idea was that anyway? Bruce TImm? That guy is just using his powers to get his fuck fics animated nowadays.
THe Killing Joke movie also ruined the original Killing Joke story by presenting it in the most dry and unimaginative way possible, pretty bad animation and blocking of scenes just made it look so generic, completely missed the point of what made the original story good.

Godzilla was so hardcore ruined that the Japanese bought the rights to the american Godzilla and then killed it off in a movie as a gag. Some people still believe 1998 Godzilla was the original Godzilla. The new american Godzilla movie was also pretty bad in my opinion but at the very least they didn't ruin Godzilla, they just made a boring movie around it.

To be honest Walpknut this paragraph is fairly confusing as to the point it wants to make. From my perspective the only "individual" stated in it in this case is Japan. So when I read it I assumed that you were still using Japan as the direction of the topic.

I have been sitting here for 5 minutes re-reading this and I'm more confused to what you were trying to get at before.

How is it confusing?

Here deconstructed for you:
Main premise: Godzilla was ruined by the 1998 american movie.

Result 1: And the Japanese got so angry about it that they bought the rights to the american version to kill it in a movie as a gag.

Sample of result 1:

Result 2: Some people think the 1998 movie was the first Godzilla. This based on conversations with people in real life who don't have any reason to know about Godzilla's story.

I honestly wasn't even aware of this one.
My basis of understanding is that of the original (The 1954 Gojira) from then the more recent one Shin Godzilla.
I honestly can't blame them for wanting to eliminate the "worm" zilla as that was indeed insulting.

I still can't help but laugh at Kylo Ren.
What I was think was "No one care who I was when I took off this mask." because that is how I felt about him.
The Force Awaken along with Jurassic World are mediocre movies that no identity of their and only serve as soft reboots. At least, giving the dinosaurs feathers would give Jurassic World its own identity but noo (To be fair that would be too risky for Hollywood but really what isn't.).
