welp, i had forgotten the silliness of "Ghouls in Space"

Soapstone

It Wandered In From the Wastes
i havent played the game in a while and i had forgotten exactly what going to the REPCONN facility near Novac did. lol! i worry about the other planets to have these walking corpses landing on them and having these aliens meet these ghouls! i just hope they arent flying into the sun!

They never reach space. If you give the Bright Followers a good ending, they eventually return to defend Novac.

Yeah, I always got the impression they were merely heading for a heavily irradiated hotspot on this planet, likely an area similar to the Glow. The Courier can express concern that the rockets will "convey" Jason and his flock straight into the ground.

Really the difference between an ICBM and a Rocket is the payload, and the former is very much intended to land somewhere on earth so I think it's plausible that they were just aiming for some place on earth that they could live their lives in peace. It's appropriate to leave this ambiguous, so people who want it zanier can have it that way and those who want it less zany can have it their way. Considering the timeframe of the game it's pretty unlikely they were able to reach anything in outer space *and* return anyway.

IIRC though the ending slide says "several Bright Followers returned" and it's not necessarily the case that absolutely all of them went in the rocket as they might not have all been in the Repconn test facility when you do that quest (you find the corpses of Bright Followers all over the Mojave, so they weren't just staying put.)

interesting, i never thought about that. i assumed that the conversation option about the rockets flying into the ground meant that i was trying to persuade them not to go on their trip. i did use science to tweak the settings of their destination to make it reach it, and then i hit the launch button. i always for some reason assumed it was a space rocket since everyone was wearing space suits.

They used space suits because they assumed they'd need them wherever they were going or just because they were there, but it's likely those rockets weren't equipped to go to space even if they wanted to. Maybe before the war they could have been capable of some amount of space travel with the right setup, but after 200 years, using makeshift components and fuel from a children's toy? I doubt they could go much farther than the surrounding region, and the ending leads me to believe they barely left Nevada as it is.

Maybe they end up in the Reservation of Van Buren, and alternatively they Found the Reservation in the official canon.

My personal theory was that they were always going to Hawaii, which would probably have been nuked pretty severely since it was the closest U.S. land to China. So basically a paradise for ghouls.
