What do you think about the Pip-Boy 3000?

So then what are those inventory, speech, and character screens?

I'm not sure if you talk about the original Pipboy 2000 from FO1 and 2 (that's the one I mean) or the mod for NV and 3.
In FO1 and 2, those screens are just game UI, not a part of the pipboy.

Yup, only Fallout 3 placed it all into the PipBoy. Before that game I never even thought about these ui elements could be inside of the PipBoy. This is the PipBoy and nothing else in the game.

Ah.

Well, inventory catalog does make sense- though there'd probably be a typing action on part of the character or something along those lines, where the player inputs it as opposed to the Pip magically reading it...

I think the 3000 could be written off as a survivalist device. It has a GPS map, a radio receiver (useful perhaps for hearing a government update or a survivor's "meet me here"), a Geiger counter and radiation counter, and note-taking/holotape reading capabilities... inventory managment (or cataloging, as would be more realistic) isn't a bad idea either. Scanning limb conditions or giving a robust estimate of the user's well being are, again, more good ideas... ultimately it makes sense as a survivalists or Vault explorer's/diplomats multi-purpose computer.

I stand by my opinion it's not a bad idea, the design and UI is lackluster, however.
