What does NMA think of Breath of the Wild?

I'm really just hoping that after this upcoming Zelda we see them go back to N64 and Windwaker game design. It doesn't have to be the exact same, but just more in line with those games. Levels can be larger, just not open world.

IIRC the shrines were fast travel markers. You don't have to complete them to use them, just activate them.

In what way is Skyrim empty?

And it has less role play than BOTW? How?
It was more of a shitpost because @Morgan_ has stupid game opinions that I can't agree with and I must form my identity around this as I'm a husk of the man I used to be.

And yes Skyrim is empty. Sure, there's shit to do but what's not repeated content? What's actually interesting? The Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood were almost okay but Oblivion's even blows those out of the water. Also don't worry if you are an illiterate barbarian who casts a few low level spells and ta-da you're qualified enough to become Arch-Mage. Why? The guilds in Morrowind were so much better in that sense. To advance in ranks you had to show competency in your skills. You have to have a skill at 90 and two at 35 alongside an attribute check. Sure that's not much but it's better than a few low level spells and doing a short questline. And you couldn't be the leader of them all because the Fighters guild and Thieves guild were at odds with each other. Like a real breathing world that, while yes it actually is waiting for you, it doesn't always feel like it is. You can also join more than the Imperials, Stormcloaks, Thieves, Mages, Dark Brotherhood, and Fighters Guilds. Morrowind has Thieves, Mages, Fighters guilds alongside the houses Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni. You could also join the East Empire Company, Imperial Cult, Imperial Legion, Morag Tong, Tribunal Temple, and three vampire clans to join if you were of their bloodline.

They also took out attributes and replaced it with levelling up health, magic, or stamina. They simplified the skills, yet again. Less weapons, yet again. There's a reason people joke that TES will one day become a game without any stats at all. We've lost the language skills, climbing, acrobatics/jumping, atheltics/running, non-generic speech skills, Thaumaturgy and Mysticism, weapon skills not being generic as hell such as: Hand-to-Hand, Axe, Blunt, Long Blade, Short Blade, Spear, and Marksman which we now have One-Handed and Two-Handed and Marksman. I hated playing mages when I played Oblivion and Skyrim. Boring, annoying assholes. Played Morrowind and had a blast as there are far more options with spells and enchantments. Why yes, I think I'll fly around faster than anyone can run and reign fire nukes down on you and when I'm done I'll teleport home (not fast travel).

Sure, some of those were even lost from Daggerfall to Morrowind but it just gets worse and worse every game. It's not hard to see why, if you're looking to play an open world RPG in first person, you'd take Morrowind over Skyrim.

Skyrim is a better adventuring sandbox and base for modding than it is a RPG.

My point was that Zelda is even more limiting than Skyrim though. It has no guilds, etc. The only roleplay is to roleplay as Link. this is fine as it is Zelda, I just don't think it mixes well with an open world. It feels limiting in this game, where as it was fine in Ocarina and Windwaker. Then again, I am conditioned to think that loads of side quests and joinable guilds should go along with an open world. Skyrim did have terrible guilds though. Thieves guild was best, I think. I would say that one was pretty good.

I just want them to go back to their roots a bit more than what we are currently getting. this one just didn't do it for me.

BOTW's combat alone puts it above Skyrim and BOTW's combat isn't exactly top tier.

Also, holy fucking shit about saying Thieves Guild of Skyrim is "actually pretty good". I need to find the post that explains how horribly written and nonsesical the Thieves Guild in Skyrim is.

The fact that, as far as I recall, without mods you literally cannot do anything but be a thief for at least one mission of the main quest makes it one of the shittiest quests in an RPG already period.

Just how it starts is absolutely horrid. Random guy runs up to you and says you look like you never worked in your life, even though you can be decked out in Dragonbone armor.

Plus i'm pretty sure you can't not accept his offer, and that's a big no-no when it comes to roleplaying.

You go do that Snorezan.

I just want them to not use open world. There were too many dead zones in this game along with all the other issues there are. That's just my opinion though. Some people like it and that's fine. I need to get emulator set up for Windwaker. I keep not doing it.

That's what I remember yeah. I remember my last playthrough of Skyrim like 8 years ago and I was doing your typical honorable Nord warrior and was extremely cheesed you couldn't bring down the Thieves Guild or simply find Esbern on your own.

Brynjolf walks up to me, a total stranger, and says, “You’ve never worked a day in your life for all that coin you’re carrying around.” This is a really screwy thing to say to an adventurer. (I imagine running over mountains and fighting through tombs is pretty labor-intensive.) I guess he’s supposed to be insinuating that I’m naturally a thief, but he says this to the player regardless of what gear they have or how much money they’ve got. It’s also odd because you can’t steal for a living until you join the guild, because you have no way to unload stolen goods. He’s implying you’re a thief, when by definition you can’t be one yet. So no matter who you are, he’s flat-out wrong. It’s also odd to be approached to join the Thieves Guild. I get that the guild has fallen on hard times, but this still feels awkward.
Got confirmation from the link i posted. How don't know what's with Bethesda and contradicting themselves. They love to jerk off to the apparent fact that their games are about freedom, but then turn around and force players to join factions by not allowing the player to say no.

At least BOTW doesn't force the player into anything they don't want to do.

Derailing slightly here but I was never at all a Nintendo guy so my experience with their titles is super limited. I was thinking if I ever started I'd get a Switch and play BoTW. Bad idea? Should I play another Zelda title first? If so, which one?

Playing other Zelda titles will only give you perspective on how much more different BoTW is. And BoTW being different was deliberate, because by Skyward Sword the 3D Zelda formula had been run to the ground and there was a big need for a major shake up.

I say still give it a shot and also try other titles in the series. If you want a more traditional take i definitely recommend A Link To the Past, even if it's a 2D game.

I honestly dont give a damn about Zelda and hardly played BOTW. I know Skyrim is more akin to what people think of with RPGs. I don't care. It's just funny to bitch about BOTW and then go play Skyrim.

People should just enjoy BoTW for what it is and not compare it to the other titles in the series.

I've never beaten a Zelda game and have only played a few minutes of one on a Gameboy and one on my friend's Wii and then I bought BOTW for my Switch and just didn't get invested into it.

I was just making a joke about the absolute irony of some people giving other people shit for not liking the Bethesda Fallouts and then turn around and say that another franchise should have never changed (i.e BoTW should haven't gone open world).

I agree, a lot of people have said that the first time you play BOTW there’s a certain charm to it but I just didn’t feel impressed at all. It is a good play though, I just really don’t see anything special that hasn’t been done already years prior.

Never played a Zelda game. I have a pretty low attention span so open-world games don't really hold me (a few exceptions like No Man's Sky, Horizon Zero Dawn). Played it on launch. Got lost and stopped playing. Booted it back up a year later, restarted and it just clicked. I adored it so much. Ended up finishing it with 400+ hours. It's one of the best games I've ever played. Can't wait for the sequel!
