What if... (Arcanum 2)

First time out of the vault
Hi, im newly registered to these forums, though ive been visiting them for a long time (since I first got a hold of the first fallout)... Anyways, I figured id slip in and start a thread, break the ice for myself and making sure my first post is something intresting.

What if , hypothetically, bethesda had gotten a hold of the Arcanum title and had wound up making an Arcanum 2? Anyone think it would be better/as good/worst then bethesda's fallout 3 creation?

Just something that was eating at the back of my brain as I have just learned about the title Arcanum, and intend to go out and purchase it, and since it was made by some of the same folks who made the fallout series, I wondered about this what if.

I sincerely hope no one will ever make an Arcanum 2.

Nuff said.

I actually wouldn't mind if some of the old developers went together and made a new Arcanum, this time with a bit more effort put into it. same kind of gameplay, perspective etc but bugfree and with better combat pretty much.

that'd never happen though, and unless that happens then I agree, no sequel please. I haven't even completed the game (mostly due to combat being utterly annoying and overall design being a bit lazy) but I know it's a great game and I don't want to see even more great games turned into modern shit.

Don't mind Alec, he likes his women fresh, young and willing... In other words, he does not savvy the idea of someone else taking the dead bloated corps of Arcanum floating in the river, raping it, gluing on hair extensions and handing it over to him...

Graphic, but true.

The only folk that should really deal with it was the ones at Troika. Seeming ignorant publishers did not see value in them, they are no more.

Bethesda putting their filthy hands on my favourite RPG ever is not something I want to seriously think about. Anyway, it won't ever happen. Rather sad that Troika died during the pre-production of Arcanum 2 though.

Bethesda is obviously the best qualified to make Arcanum 2. Take the elves & magic from Oblivion and the guns from Fallout 3, take textures from both games and reduce contrast to make it true to Arcanum and they've got it.

Redrum??!!

Murder!!

Anyway, given supporters like baronjohn, it's possible that Bethesda will pick it up. Then again, why does mr. redrum sounds like a PR guy looking to gauge market reception to the said idea?

What, Todd, Elder Scrolls and FO series alone aren't enough for you? Or maybe it's because the Action movie director gig that you wanted so badly fell through, so you are looking at other options?

Damn it people, stop giving Bethesda funny ideas!

When Fallout 3 forums opened i started few topics how great it would be if you could build your own weapons just like in Arcanum, and they did it!

After playing F3 almost every night i cry myself to sleep.

FORGIVE ME!

There was going to be an Arcanum sequel according to wikipedia :

"In a 2000 interview with Nextgame.it Tim Cain announced plans for an Arcanum sequel, but these plans would not come to pass – Troika Games filed for dissolution on September 30, 2005.

In September 2006, one of Arcanum's lead programmers and tri-founder of Troika, Leonard Boyarsky, divulged that the studio had originally commenced work on a sequel, going by the working title of Journey to the Centre of Arcanum, which would use Valve's Source Engine. Development was curtailed by disputes between Sierra and Valve, resulting ultimately in the project being shelved

Dear god, let this be a joke.

Someone knows how expensive the Arcanum rights are? Just in case... :>

I think, I could like a Arcanum 2.. but not from Bethesda. This is a big no-go.

Anyone who played Arcanum knows it's almost impossible to do a sequel. A prequel could work, but I'd rather not see that happen. Troika could have pulled it off, but they are no more. Maybe Obsidian could do it, they're like the last game developers I kinda sorta trust, but still: rather not.

Instead of following the path of the latest trend in entertainment ("let's remake this classic, let's do a sequel to that classic"), I would like to see a return to originality and real creativity: make/invent new things, don't fuck up golden oldies because you smell an opportunity (aka the putrid stench of money). Be creative. Be original.

Aw, what's the point anyway... :(

This is why adventure games are dying. No one wants to be original anymore. The only recent game that came close was Pychonauts.

I agree on this, but I still would like to have a new game in the Arcanum world. It doesn't need to be "Arcanum 2: The hero reborn" but something like a good spin-off (but still cRPG) could work, imo. Or a kind of Vampire: Bloodlines in the Arcanum world but with less shity stuff after the first half of the game.

A prequel could work. I want to see the industrial revolution of Tarant, when technology shows its ugly head. Another thing that should have been in Arcanum is war. I want to see elves fight off techno gunslingers. Imagine the elves from Quintarra(sp?) invading Tarant, awesome.

Or a troll... My money is a little on column A and a little on column B.

At any rate, I would trust Sierra to do an decent prequel to Arcanum. I can't quite think of who else would do a good job of a task like this now a days.
