Well not completely Fallout but still somewhat in the similar direction. And interesting nontheless.

"How 1940s whiskey ads predicted the cell phone, the 3D movie, videoconferencing, and sports bars . . . and a bunch of stuff that hasn't happened yet."

Some things are really out of this world (new Fedx ex system ?) but other ideas are pretty close in how many things are used today. Like the video conversation from all over the world.

Or 3D Cinema !

I wrote my MA thesis on American visions of the future from the 30's to the end of the 50's.

A lot of sci-fi ideas from that time were developed and incorporated into 'real life' solutions, from AWACS and Combat Information Centers to geostationary satellites.

well I think its not that hard to give some prediction regarding future technology if you have the knowledge what might be possible. I mean its not hard to say that in 50 years we will have found some cure for this or that. Or that some kind of technology will be a every day tool. Like holographic projections.

What is probably impossible to say is how the technology will look like. In terms of design. The picture from above for example is extremly close to reality in many ways ... flat screens and sport events and such. Though the video transimisions are correct in use but the technology looks different from design.

Will be interesting to see what people in 50 or 100 years will say about "our" predictions.

Given the rate of exponential technological development, i think that it is as difficult to predict the future 10 years from now, as it was to predict the future for the next 50years, 50 years ago.

A lot of things "might" be possible. Having them being imagined, developed and used on a widespread basis are entirely different things ... Plasma TV tech was around in the 70's. So was the concept of a digital music player.

In the same way, that seed-shaped mail package might be technically feasible, but not used.

Is that what that was? I thought it was a giant catapult.

Like holographic projections.

I never understood this love for holograms. What are the benefits? What are the advantages? How will this technology make the world better and people happier? Unless the idea is for mobile images, videos and games, that you can take and interact with everywhere you go. But then how will it be powered?

For one thing, anybody doing CAD, or really, any kind of design, will benefit greatly from being able to examine things in 3-d. Coupled with new kinds of X-ray techniques, doctors could examine your body in 3-D. You could have a 3D desktop that doesn't have a screen. While in some instances this may not be that great (TV/movies), it'll certainly be cool in others. Hell,it may actually do okay in TV/movies. They typically shoot things from multiple angles, and that could be used to set up a holographic film/video set up. Police surveillance would benefit greatly, nevermind what it could do for the military.

Besides all of that, holograms are fucking sweet.

after this little edit, its would easily apply to any invention today
from 50 years ago perspective, starting with internet.... steam engine... etc..

Two words:

Hologram Porn.

I mean, just think about it, did those guys in the 80s at arpanet think they were creating something that would be used for porn?

I assumed it was a given that we all knew that porn would be applied to anything. I thought it went without saying.
