What's your GOTY?

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Interestingly that is an underrated game from what I hear.

Everyone seems to be going bonkers over the Witcher... I purchased the EE version and was not impressed... Given NMA's track history with game recommendations (its that good), I've come to the conclusion that I'm just one tasteless SOB.

Then again, maybe I do have some taste after all... I'll hit you all with the most underrated, amazing, lose yourself for countless hours and most successful game of 2008... The best part is, you probably don't know the title.

Believe it or not, this mammoth of a game was created on a budget of one million dollars and allot of dreams. To date Sins has sold well over $500,000 copies. And $30 USD for either digital copy or retail box, you can't go wrong!

I love it so much I have two autographed copies and a poster from PAX '08 ...I think the brains of SINS also deserves the most attractive video game developers award. I don't think I've seen guys in three piece suits delivering a lecture on their products at a venue such as PAX.

GTA IV is just a great experience. That's one of the only games I feel like I've really gotten my money's worth from lately.

I've wanted to play Sins of a Solar Empire since it shipped, however, EU3 and EU:Rome have eaten up a lot of my computer time.

Also, anybody who says 2008 was bereft of good games hasn't played very many.

What is a good game is a matter of personally taste. With most of this board being out of sync with mainstream hence the comments so far in this thread.

X³: Terran Conflict being my pick for games that came out this year. Mostly I've been playing things from ages gone by.

EU3 In Nomine, Fallout 3, Baseball Mogul 2009 are about all I played in 2008. All great fun.

Bioshock and Half-Life 2 Ep. 2 may have made the cut, I can't remember if I played them last year or this year though.

2008 sucked horribly. Fallout 3 was the best game I played and that isn't saying very much. GTA 4 caught my attention for a week.

Yeah, I enjoyed it a lot. Thought that the shooting was fantastic, and the stealth system was really good. I'm a little dissapointed to see the absence of planning missions and directing teams via radio but it's still awesome. I don't really understand most of the complaints being made. I haven't play Sins of a Solar Empire, but I haven't heard anything but praise for it so I feel like I should probably give it a look. Unfortunately I just spent 80 some dollars on Steam so I can't really justify the purchase of another game.

Isn't really a game this year that I could single out as "great".

As for the ones I got the most fun out of, that would be Devil May Cry 4, King's Bounty: The Legend, and Sublustrum (a.k.a. Outcry).

dead space for me. All other Mainstream titles have been kind of meh, or have ultimately been dissapointing.

Dead space, while not entirely original, had enough atmosphere and sci fi references to keep me entertained. I dug the refrences to solaris, the amazing looking enviroments and the interesting story.

GTA4 is garbage

You guys have piqued my interest in this King's Bounty game and Sins of A Solar Empire. Ima have to look them up now.

Those are actually references to "Event Horizon" which is a MUCH inferior movie and it rips of "Solaris" quite a bit. Dead Space in turn rips off "Event Horizon". Like Yahtzee said in his review "it rips it off as frequently as it does limbs".

I would say Planescape Torment. Don't let the fact fool you that it was published in 1999, it is the Game of the year in every year!

Well in that case my GOTY is Fallout 2.

I think not. I'll try to get it back on track. Honestly, even though I didn't like it that much GTA 4 is the GOTY as far as value for your bucks. It had a good story, good graphics, was fun to play, and it wasn't toned down like Fallout 3 was. I did like Fallout 3 for awhile, ,but I would be lying if I said I could stomach to play it again. I could make myself play GTA 4.

Even with all of it's faults it still proves to be what it is:

A entertaining sandbox title with a mature storyline.

I agree with what others said though; no title truly deserves a GOTY. Even with GTA 4 it is just a rehash of all the other games. Fable 2 was fun for about 2 days then I saw how shallow it was. They try to coerce you into the whole co-op bullshit. I don't like that.

I bought Mortal Kombat vs. Dc which was a mistake. It was a rental at best but not a buy.

Oops I forgot. Left 4 Dead. I guess it could deserve a GOTY. Even though I bought it for 360 and I don't have Live. That's my bad.

So there. I retract my previous statement. Left 4 Dead for the win by default.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was a fun game but way too easy and too short, but still great fun. With every RS game i hope that it will return to the complexity of the first games, since Lockdown was a huge disappointment Vegas series is a small step to right directions.

Sins of the Solar Empire is a average game in my book, fun for few playtroughts but quickly forgotten after that. It was just too simple for my taste and lack of story was not a plus. Homeworld, Hegemonia and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident are far superior games.

I'm really hoping the next Rainbow Six has the combat of Vegas 2, and the mission planning of the originals.

I tried playing Fable: The Lost Chapters but i noticed that after a while the quest got so damn repetetive. Escort this villager, kill those bandits and etc. so i quit playing it.
Is it the same with Fable 2 ? Or does it at least offer an interesting story/mainquest ?

I would vote World Of Goo, but then I haven't tried Sins yet (I'd probably like it more). Art Style: Orbient (WiiWare) would probably be up there, too, I thought it was quite fun and original :D

Fallout 3 would make top 5, but then 2008 wasn't exactly a good year for my tastes :(

World of Goo was the best, King's Bounty and Bionic Commando: Rearmed are the only other games worth mentioning.
