WHY U SO RETARDED F02!?

ELIT3RPG

First time out of the vault
So, I have been trying to get into fallout 2, but every time I find the game's storyline to be missing huge mother fucking gaps in them, I mean, every time I fix gecko's reactor, I sort of just lose interest. I get the car, I kill Metzger, I do lots of things to at least TRY to get into the game, but not only is the story line fucked up in my opinion, it is so fucking hard to play the game, not the combat, just the quests, I mean, I was trying to find out where to go in redding, but I couldn't find anything to do except talk to that damned sheriff. I couldn't find where to go, I got lost every time. I tried using a complete walkthrough, but even then, it ended up getting edited saying stuff like "Oh, I found out that I missed sooo many quests!" and it got taken down by the author, does anyone know what to do in the game or know a full tutorial? I just need to finish this game!

The goal of the game is to save your village (as you are clearly being told at the very start of the game). You do this by finding the GECK. The storyline is something you construct yourself while playing, and seeing as how FO2 is so huge and has so many quests to offer, the storyline will actually vary from player to player depending on the choices they make throughout the game. If the storyline you are constructing seems 'to be missing huge mother fucking gaps', then you are doing something wrong.

I mean, every time I fix gecko's reactor, I sort of just lose interest. I get the car, I kill Metzger, I do lots of things to at least TRY to get into the game, but not only is the story line fucked up in my opinion,
None of these quests are necessary to finish the game. If you don't enjoy fixing Gecko's power plant or killing Metzger, then don't. As I said earlier: the goal is to find the GECK and save your village. What you do in between the start of the game and the ending is your choice. FO2 just offers you a shitload of subplots to chose from, freely.

it is so fucking hard to play the game, not the combat, just the quests, I mean, I was trying to find out where to go in redding, but I couldn't find anything to do except talk to that damned sheriff.
Some of the quests are indeed hard, but again they are rarely necessary to complete the game. If a quest is too hard for you at a certain point in the game, go somewhere else and - perhaps - return later to finish what you couldn't finish earlier. Isn't it swell that such an old game offers you that possibility? As for Redding: that town is filled with npc's who will answer your questions (or not) and who will offer you quests (or not). Have you actually tried to talk to anyone else but the sherrif in Redding? Also: Redding can be completely ignored if you don't like it. Again: how cool is that? It's extra content for those who enjoy games like that.

I couldn't find where to go, I got lost every time.
There are maps. A map is a thing that helps you orientate and find your way. Why not use them?

I tried using a complete walkthrough, but even then, it ended up getting edited saying stuff like "Oh, I found out that I missed sooo many quests!" and it got taken down by the author, does anyone know what to do in the game or know a full tutorial?
Google 'Per + Fallout 2 walkthrough'. This is the best guide out there and afaik it never got taken down.

I just need to finish this game!
Have you considered the possibility that FO2 just isn"t your kind of game? Why punish yourself so much?

There is practically no story in FO2, so, I'm not sure what it is you are struggling so much with.
You are given a task "Save us [and the rest of the continent, while you're at it]", and you look down at yourself, thinking "in vault pyjamas, and with a wooden spear?"

What you do then is two things primarily:
1. Talk to everyone you meet, in order to collect quests, tasks, locations, things-to-do, xp to win, so that you'll grow, as a character. Enemies here are not levelled, like in FO3, if you run straight away to beat some boss, you're gonna get completely and utterly pwned.
So, a bulk of gameplay consists of you - freely - exploring around to simply gather xp, collect it, like a hobby. Xp, weapons, armor, anything that will toughen you up.

2. Talk to everyone you meet, and keep that eye up for GECKs.

3. Or, talk to nobody. It's up to you.

It's a very different playing style than FO3, because everything is very much up to you, from the moment you are given the task to find a GECK.
In fact, MY personal approach, is to think of it like - my tribe is sending me out to find the GECK, and I'm using it almost as a vacation instead. Screw them and their GECK! It's a role play game. Pretending is a part of the fun! :D

What isn't so ironic is that someone who put their pseudonym in "L331 Talk" created a topic named "WHY U SO RETARDED FO2!"

Love when the noob trolls come out. Did I say love I meant that other word?

You know, when I am stuck somewhere in any game, my usual plan includes googling a walkthrough, checking the wikia or if I'm exceptionally pissed off, leaving the game altogether. What is certainly not on my to-do list is bitching about it on a fan forum. It is not even on the 'remotely reasonable things people might seriously do when stuck' list.

Therefore I need to ask a question:
ELIT3RPG, why are you trolling us?

If you are pushing yourself to complete the game and the further you go you don't like it anymore, why extend your suffer?

Nobody will judge you ( probably) if you didn't finish the game, at least you played it. Does Fallout 1 give you the same feeling?

Damn @BigBoss, that is a long signature.

Aw I don't think he's a troll, but I tend to be a benefit-of-doubt-sorta guy. Let's remember that every now and then, people will show up who don't know everything and maybe he DOES feel a certain.. "duty" to play FO1 and FO2, you know, cus half of us nag half of everyone to do it, so, sooner or later, there's gonna be someone who actually does try to play through them, out of a sense of obligation :D

Yeah I change it often. I'll shorten it this time around.

I posted this a few days ago, and came back to see the replies, after seeing someone actually post a tutorial I clicked on it and got back into the game, going over everything I forgot to get, I realized that I forgot to thank him, but, when I got back on to reply and say my thanks, I am greeted with tons of this "why do you troll us ELIT3? I, for once in my life, am not trolling, and yes, I saw a few posts saying why don't you just give up and end your pain of trying to complete the game? go play something else, but, no. I DO feel obligated to complete the game, I completed fallout 1 no prob because I really liked it's storyline, but this game presents me with no storyline, only a decent hook, I love the feel of the game, just not the feel of the atmosphere, I feel like everyone in the game just crawled out from behind a rock for the first time in 50 years and don't know about shit. BUT, no, I am gonna try to play, using this amazingly detailed tutorial I got, so to all those thinking I am just a lowly troll, no, I am not, I just don't understand this game, but I'm trying to. I feel as if this is my 17 year old daughter, and I am it's father/mother, and It just rebels to rebel, and if I just give up, it'll probably become a hooker or a crackwhore, and so I don't give up, and I try to understand it, and be the good father/mother (gamer) I always wanted to be. All those people who think I just do this because I don't have anything better to do except bitch about my problems on a fan forum, I say FUCK YOU. I needed help with the game, and I got it. Thanks to-- Zegh8578, Emperor, H3rw00d1, Languorous_Maiar, FEVinconsistancies, and finally Alec, who took apart my messages and answered them all part by part, and to answer your question, I have stated that up above.

I do hope you'll forgive the guys-- we've had a lot of trolls come through over the years and some of the regular posters have understandably developed a bit of shellshock. It's pretty evident from other posts you've made that you're here in earnest, but not everyone checks up on every forum every day. I'm glad you're sticking it out with the game, and there's a lot to enjoy there. You might do better with it on subsequent playthroughs once you know what you're in for-- I choked pretty hard on certain facets of it, too, my first time out (tribals and almost all of San Francisco and New Reno, for starters). After you've gotten the initial WTFing out of the way they're a lot of fun to explore, and the writing in this game is top-tier.

For what it's worth, a lot of the people who have been with the series since the beginning more-or-less mirror your assessment. Fallout 2 is always going to be one of my favorite games, but there's no denying that for every major improvement it made to the franchise it introduced something else that was inconsistent or problematic, and it planted the seeds for a lot of the bitter fruit that was to be found in F3. To borrow a phrase recently coined by the Wasteland 2 devs, it was a narrative sandbox. Unlike in the first game, a lot of the content was completely unconnected to the main questline in any way, which isn't for everybody. Especially when they didn't really even have time to finish properly making the game, let alone fit in a few extra QA/consistency passes and make sure everyone was on the same page concerning design philosophy and tone.

Also, telling the board to fuck themselves may not be the best way to win hearts/minds. Just sayin'.
