Where did I say I want it for free? I want the ads OUTSIDE the main article space.

Ok.

Unless you're willing to foot wikia's hosting bill, you don't really get a say in that tho', do you?

I would consider the more constructive response to this horrible action of wikia to try and make some money to be to offer them an alternative, such as wikipedia's donation-driven system.

Doesn't matter. 's the same thing with TV commercials. I've never bought a product because of a TV commercial. But the people who pay for the ads believe it works, and market studies shows it works, so heck, it probably works.

Is this true, though? Maybe not directly because of an ad, but what ads do do is increase brand recognition. They legitimize the idea of the product. So when you next go to the store, when you see something which has been advertised well/frequently, instead of thinking "what the fuck is this shit?" you think "this shit is A and B and C, I know because Kristin Kreuk said so; also, I want to bang Kristin Kreuk." And, if the product is advertised even more deviously, you may just think "this shit is A and B and C, and I seriously want to but it and bang Kristin Kreuk."

Since I'm part of what gives Wikia its appeal, I have a say in these matters. And if it's unwilling to provide service of a sufficent quality, I'll move the Wiki off Wikia and merge with another site, will shall remain unnamed for now.

They are already making money, but now want to make money by interfering with content. To use your comparison, it's as if when watching television, a box occupying one fourth of your screen stayed there and displayed commercials.

Wikia can run as a profitable venture without these ads?

I've never seen a MediaWiki server running that didn't have a lot of trouble scraping together cash.

Horrible news! As a highly regarded wikipedian who wishes to help mankind expand her knowledge (see what i did there?), i find these dark times for myself and the whole wiki community.

BN, have you ever used a Wiki? The ads are ALREADY THERE.

The problem is not *more* ads, the problem is their *placement*.
