Windows Vista gaming 10 to 15 percent slower than XP

Wasn't the point of an operation system to be as least cumbersome as possible, so you're spending the least amount of time playing around with the files, and instead WORKING ON SAID FAILES?

Congratulations to Microsoft for shooting themselves in the third foot with Vista.

It is why I have all the XP bells and whistles turned off, because they are useless and add nothing but overhead to the system. It amazes me how stupid people with money can become.

i think they have twisted up some things. they are making an Operation System not an GAME. The main focus of Vista is their new "3d-Desktop", like somebody really gives a fuck about it(okay maybe people like Todd Howard, but normal dudes?!). It reminds me on Oblivion, where graphic is one of the main priorities. I´m not even sure about it, if you actually can turn off the "3d-Desktop". But earlier or later we need to buy it, because it supports DirectX 10, and only new games will work with directX 10 :freak: .

I am part of the beta program and I would have to say it is true. Oblivion runs fine on XP but vista it runs like shit, same with HL2 and all the others games I tried. I get a 15 to 20 FPS drop from vista.

I do have to say I really like the new interface but it runs like shit with apps

i fail to see how anyone is actually surprised that things run slower on an OS that runs a 3d desktop at all times, regardless of being visible or not. it's just common sense.

either way, i'm quite sure that i'll eventually switch to Vista, but i hope that by then there will be a cutdown version or a mod to remove the 3d crap. i wouldnt mind stripping the entire thing of all bells & whistles.

anyhow, i guess i'll have a lot of work tweaking that sluggish OS into something acceptable. too bad really.

in the end, i'm kinda surprised Mickeysoft went all out on this. sure a 3d interface is SHINY (TM), but how is the IT div of an enterprise supposed to convince their management to switch to an OS that causes workstations to be slower than before?

my main reason to use XP is because games run easier and usually better under that than under linux (emulated). if Vista can't turn off the resourcehog shit, then i really have little reason to stick to windblowz stuff when i get a new rig.

Solution = dual boot vista and xp

Soon enough with the way the hardware is advancing, newer computers will be able to handle vista and gaming without sweating it. Older computers wont stand a chance... (espeacially with intergrated gfx)

I foresee Microsoft looking to make a "multiple desktop" like other OS desktops, and only load up the 3d portion when it is selected.

Looking and doing being two different things, of course.

Nah. Remember the day when XP was release and they let the messenger service turn on by default?

It's always a messy-startup for Microsoft when they release a new OS and I think the new desktop theme (aero-glass) is a resource hog plus they use vector-based graphic to render everyhing now including icons.

Plus those games didn't code with Dx-10...

By the time Vista becomes the standard OS, (meaning Service Pack 2 or 3 is released), new PCs will probably come with 8-core 64-bit processors and a quarter of a terabyte of ram. It is funny how software just keeps getting more and more bloated just so hardware manufacturers can keep turning a profit. Maybe its time to upgrade to DOS.

And buy both of them?

Solution == Linux

Linux isnt a solution, its a problem when it comes to gaming... unless the only thing you use your os for is web browsing.

Most people already have some form of windows xp, its buying vista thats going to hurt your wallet. I have no intention to buy vista because its probably going to be rediculasly overpriced when it first comes out.

That's funny. First I had to upgrade computers because developers value the shiny above competent programming, now games have to slow down and go on a backburner a bit as computers catch up to the shiny above competent programming of Microsoft.

At least then we can go back to the status quo of buying computers that have completely useless capabilities just because the shiny will then run on it.

You are way, way, way behind. Linux' graphical capabilities are equal to or even outshine Windows' capabilities on nVidia chipsets and come close on ATi chipsets. Many games can be played adequately using a Windows emulator, and several high-profile games can be played well natively.

Linux (and to make it easy, take Ubuntu as a Linux benchmark) currently does a lot of things better than Windows.

The day a Linux becomes capable of running all Windows games and software as good as Windows do is the day I switch to Linux
