Well I managed to get the texture for the combat shotgun and half of the model (I still need the magazine texture, help me out pls) and decided to try and spruce it up a bit, here's what I've got so far:

It's not horribly much but I can't work wonders without having the whole model

Does somebody know a way of making the game load custom BSAs? I can't hack the textures.bsa so I though it'd be probably easier to make my own one and force the game to load it.

We can extract most of the .BSAs with the Oblivion Mod Manager, but not the Textures.bsa unfortunately.

Might be best to try that Archive Invalidation technique used for most Oblivion mods.
It would make the game load the files in the data folder that you have changed over the files in the .BSAs

    sure :)

With Oblivion some clever git figured out that by having a file called 'ArchiveInvalidation.txt' in the main directory with all the edited files listed in them, they could make the game load the wanted files over the .BSAs.

the inside of the file would look roughly like this:

    meshes/architecture/anvil/lighthousebase01.nif
    meshes/architecture/anvil/lighthousetoproom01.nif
    meshes/architecture/anvil/uc03interiorfirstfloor.nif
    meshes/architecture/anvil/uc03interiorsecondfloor.nif
    meshes/architecture/arena/chorrolbloodworks01.nif
    meshes/architecture/basementsections/1way.nif
    textures/architecture/arena/arenastonegutter01_g.dds
    textures/architecture/arena/arenastonegutter01_n.dds
    textures/architecture/arena/arenatapestrychorrol.dds
    textures/architecture/arena/arenatapestrychorrol_n.dds
    textures/architecture/arena/arenatapestryimperial.dds

That is my ArchiveInvalidation file from Oblivion.
So naturally you would just make this file with the name and path of the texture you wish to replace.

I'm going to try this right now :)

Edit/ I couldn't get this to work, but these 2 sites will explain the whole thing a bit more:

I hope in the long run someone will make a combat shotgun that is actually a shotgun rather than a PPSh

Mmm, one could easily make an USAS-12 for instance without even having to make new animations when the tools are out.

    Maybe I will

For now, as I have the model, I'll ditch the quick edit I did previously and redo the texture completely.

    Aye, very nice

Though I have to note/ask one thing: you are aware textures aren't the only problem with a gun like the combat shotgun right, Millenia? I mean, it's design is impossible, pure and simple.

ArchiveInvalidation.txt handling in oblivion was badly bugged, and never worked reliably. It hasn't really been used since I came up with bsa alteration. (Which itself hasn't been used since Quarn came up with BSA redirection, which is far quicker and doesn't screw up patches. :P)

No idea what the situation is like with fallout; someone on the official forums mentioned a bInvalidateOlderFiles option in the ini, which sounds like it makes fallout behave in the same way as oblivion used to behave with bsa rediection in use. Assuming no bugs, that should let any bsa files be replaced without problems.

Heh, was browsing FPS Banana and came across your stuff. Damn nice.
Shame about the actual shotgun model though.

    very nice work indeed.

it'll take a lot of work, but the game will really be a lot nicer if people keep making such nice mods. (too bad that the shotgun itself is illogical)

Yeah it took me a while to actually find some stuff on Archive Invalidatuion since it aint used anymore. But I couldn't see how we would go about redirecting the BSAs

That bInvalidateOlderFiles option you mentioned sounds like the way to go. Im going to try that with just a basic ArchiveInvalidation.txt and see if there is any effect.

Or... if you have any tips on how to Alter/Redirect the BSAs I'm all ears :)
OBMM did that for Oblivion, but I havent even bothered trying it for Fallout, perhaps its worth a try?

    EDIT

Thought you would like to know that bInvalidateOlderFiles setting is working ok. Created a little mod using that setting. Its in the 'No Compass markers' thread.

Thanks nad02s, worked like a charm!

Here's an ingame shot with a little progress on the actual gun too (the normal maps on the drum are VERY temporary and shitty, I'll redo those later)

I can't wait for this re-texture, I've got the others (mostly) looking sweet but the shotgun. I ain't no moddler, so I have to wait for clever bods like you to help a guy like me out.... thank you please!

I have to agree on this. Wouldn't it be smarter to retexture something that will actually stay in the game? :D
I'm pretty sure once a new shotgun model is released, 99% of the players with a brain will use that. And there is already somebody at the nexus making the combat shotgun to a spaz shotgun.
