I'm now officially at the point I'm disgusted with our "president".

"
WASHINGTON - Frustrated by Democrats and even a few Republicans, President Bush on Monday circumvented the Senate and appointed embattled nominee John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations.

“He is the right man for the job,” Bush told reporters at the White House. “This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform.”

Bush has the power to fill vacancies without Senate approval while Congress is in recess. Under the Constitution, a recess appointment during the lawmakers’ August break would last until the next session of Congress, which begins in January 2007. "

Does anyone else find terrible irony in Bush's feeling that the UN ambassadorship is an important job?

I bet Fox News will be fellating the man for the next week to get the rednecks on their side. All because Bush thinks the UN and the international process is in 'important'.

I'm definitely moving to Australia after I finish my degree. :seriouslyno:

Well, if nothing else, the fucker's going to be out of the office in a few more years.

Unless of course, he attempts to rewrite the Constitution so he can serve a third term...

That's interesting. Don't they have to vote on it when they come out of recess? An odd political move.

From what I read, it appears the appointment lasts until the new Congress is elected, January 2007.

Bush has the power to fill vacancies without Senate approval while Congress is in recess. Under the Constitution, a recess appointment during the lawmakers’ August break would last until a newly elected Congress takes office in January 2007.

That doesn't make much sense. So the appointment breaks automatically when the new congress is elected...

But I remember from the fisticuffs surrounding the court appointments that such a back-handed appointment could or would be voted again after recess. They can vote on it again, can't they?

I don't think so. It seems like its a done deal, since he used the August recess as an excuse to push it through.

I can imagine that Bush just made getting any other agenda items through Congress a bit more difficult, as he's pissed off a lot of people.

Again.

My understanding of it is that once a recess appointment is made congress can't do anything about it. It's just one of the things congress has to accept as a possibility if they drag things out; they usually bank on the fact that the president wouldn't risk getting on their bad side by doing it, but apparently Bush doesn't care. Sucks for him because Roberts is going to get hammered now whereas he probably would have been confirmed fairly easily otherwise.

Edit: Pope beat me to it.

And if they wanted to do something about it they would have to bring it up as a new motion, something only the majority party can do.:eyebrow:

So, yeah, it's basically permanent.

I am not surprised. In fact, nothing in American politics, or even global politics, surprise me anymore. I've mostly given up on Humanity by now. Expect more of these kind of political coups in the not too distant future.

What I am wondering is whether an American can go to Bolton's office and make a nusiance of himself. If Bolton tries to kick him out the American might say, "WTF? I have as much right to be here as you do. You weren't appointed by any Senate from my country, dick!"
