Jeez, Cimmerian, do you think all console gamers are retards? Stop stereotyping, man.

This article gave me no new info. It is therefore useless. Tell me when the next IGN preview arrives.

Gears of War is still cool.

Maybe not all console gamers are, but after spending about 15 mins playing CoD4 on my brother's 360 online, and listening to the type of chatter that goes on there, I'd have to say that 99.99% of them fall into the "developmentally challenged" category.

That's why I stick to games like MGS4 on my PS3... I don't have to listen to anybody else while playing it.

Unless you also play Metal Gear Online like I do.

I've been yelled at for hitting my own team with an RPG-7, but haven't heard anything particularly salacious. (Unless you want to count the sound of Akiba shitting his pants)

CoD 4's online is dumb. Good stuff in it, but everyone and their frat brother bought it. At least Bethesda's forum had a Halo 3 clan. I could meet people there that weren't idiots.

But maybe playing online knocks your brain out. Look at Counter-Strike: Source. Lots of idiots there, and it's on PC.

Kindly don't put your presumptuous words in my mouth.
And don't be so obtuse, how do you explain that the more Bethesda games get dumbed down and the more the RPG components are supplanted by action oriented gameplay, the more commercially succesful they are?
You don't see any correlation there?

Bethesda does for RPGs what Taco Bell does for Mexican food.

Yeah I see a correlation. Simple games that don't require thought or imagination sell better then ones that do... but that applies to any game, console or computer.

And yes, even though I play my PS3 online, I always turn off the voice chat. Geez it is annoying. I hate it.

That's great and all, but I'm talking about one particular game. Not all games on all platforms.
One game getting training wheels put it on it for the benefit of reaching a broader market.
One game with a half-assed combat system that has to be nerfed so as not to turn off the mainstream.
Pandering to the LCD.
Design dictated by trends and marketing.

Read that quote from Todd I posted before.
They needed to nerf the combat effectiveness of adjacent enemies.
Why?
If you're getting your ass kicked by an adjacent enemy because you'd rather see the VATS moneyshot, well that's shitty strategy. Nerfing those adjacent attacks for those that can't be bothered implicitly encourages more of the same by facilitating the success of back-asswards strategy.

How can the writer of this article expects anyone to take the strategic merits of this game seriously?

Action can be handled in real-time or through the turn-based VATS system, letting both wannabe Rambos and strategy buffs enjoy it equally.
ORLY?
I'm a strategy buff, and that kind of combat system is Mickey Mouse. Fallout had a tight combat system already, albeit simplistic TB, all it needed was more contemporary TB conventions that can be found in games like JA2, SS, hell even Tactics!
Fallout 3 has drifted so far away from the core mechanics and RPG components of the series, it's just silly.
It's Fauxllout.

The job of such magazines is to get people to play games. Period. Like the job of movie mags is to get butts in the theatre, or sports journals to get people to watch the games. Anyone who thinks that any such type of magazine/site isn't part of the business is kidding themselves.

Agreed, but they are still journalists, it's just irritating to see the profession (at least most of it), reduced to corporate puppets to boost sales or to lead people as far away from the truth as possible (Fox News=Murdoch=The devil whore).

I agree that its frustrating to see things like Fox News, or the need for someone like John Stewart just to have a sensical political debate.

But in my opinion, just because gaming mags/sites are published it doesn't make them journalists. I don't think they ever claimed to be. When have you ever read a gaming site/mag that actually went in-depth and revealed something? You'll never see a gamepro or a gamespot go and expose a poorly built game release for profits. They'll bash it in their review department, but it will end there.

It took THREE years for anything explaining the Red Ring of Death to be published, and then it was an investigation that was made at the request of stock-holders that was made public.

I'm sure if they were journalists they could have gotten a guy to spill the beans off the record. But it doesn't work that way, nor was it ever intended to. The only reason why reviews are less biased is because that's the only part of the magazine/site where people actually hold them accountable. Otherwise they're part of the hype machine, no more, no less.

There are a few exceptions, but they're few and far between...and they're expected to toe the line or have their access to any previews or games in development cut off. Look at what happened to Jeff Grestmann when he stepped out of line. Had it been a serious news industry, Jeff might still have been fired, but he would have been hired by a competitor the next day lauded as a brave reported who risked everything to get the story.

In this case, there was a week or two of internet outrage, and then it was gone.

Meh, I don't care. As long as the game is enjoyable, I'll play it. I don't care about what type of game it is. I'll play anything from FPS's to RPG's to RTS's to sports games. I liked Oblivion as much as I liked Fallout. In fact, you guys and your constant praise of this game made me get a collection set off of eBay. And I only said that because you were pulling out that "Bethesda's target audience is retards" stuff.

First of all, I don't care if you're shallow enough to not care what kind of shit you walk in.
Secondly, don't attribute words like retard to me when I never used them. Attributing a vile word to me that I never said, putting it in quotes as if I said it, twice no less, despite my request the first time.
That's called strawmanning my friend.

Agreed.

Wrong. They call themselves journalists on a fairly regular basis, in fact, there are a few articles that have been published about NMA that the author has referred to them self or their peer as a journalist. Here's one from two days ago:
Another Journalist Interjecting: Also, it’s part of a PC world, which is not part of the console world which is a bigger part of the business than it might have been previously.

Indeed no, and some openly eschew the label, like Kotaku or Destructoid. They're bloggers or just "internet writers" and don't want the journalistic label put on them. Ironically, they're better journalists than the guys from GameSpot, 1up, IGN, Eurogamer or GameSpy, who all claim to be journalists.

Gerstmann's website Giant Bomb is doing fairly well I believe.

Chill dude. No need to be rude. But you just said stuff like "Pandering to the LCD".

And if I enjoy it, then it isn't shit.
