Your own Vault ideas

Does that exclude control vaults where, perhaps, something interesting happened that wasn't the result of a ludicrous experiment?

I don't think so. Tranquility Lane, Cryogenics, The Social Experiment w/ Human Sacrifice in New Vegas, and a few others are good ideas.

But there's no real benefit from just gassing everyone.

What if everyone in the vault was a homosexual and they decided to stay true to their orientation and they never had kids? So then they die. They could call it vault 88 or something.

  • A vault where once the door was shut it wouldn't be possible to open it again.
  • The vault would have a large storage area full with digging and construction equipment and machinery.
  • Besides the storage area, the vault would have the overseer office and a kitchen/food area. The rest would have to be built.
  • There would be blueprints and plans for how the vault would be when completed.
  • Residents would be construction professionals, miners, engineers, architects, etc.
  • They would be instructed by the Overseer to follow the plans and blueprints only if they wanted to.
  • There was only one part of the blueprints they would have to follow. They couldn't block the access to a door that just leads to a natural store wall and they couldn't dig that wall.
  • After 50 years the vault dwellers could start digging that natural stone wall and try to reach the surface. This would be the only exit from the vault and only if the dwellers wanted or managed to do so.
That is all.

I think this would be even better if they weren't professionals.

But could you ask for everyone else's privileges to be taken away? So you would be the only one that could ask for stuff.

I like stuff.
Given a little time, everyone would go nuts.

*Especially if one asked to deprive others; but I meant simply to be given whatever one needed or really desired... without cost or restriction of any kind.

The SyFy channel did this actually.

Vault 106 a.k.a The U.S.S. Explorer

The Sole Survivor arrives at yet another Vault and hacks into it, only to immediately be surrounded by people in Naval uniforms and space suits looking entirely panicked. You see, in Vault 106, they were given the task by the Enclave to test to see how people would respond to a 200 year journey to Alpha Centauri. The entirety of the Vault is thus made up to look like a spaceship with the locals maintaining machinery meant to mimick the journey.

The current Overseer isn't as fanatical as previous ones and the journey is supposed to be ending anytime now but they've been "delayed." They'll also be horrified to discover the US government hasn't rebuilt the world yet. She's also ashamed of her ancestors who maintained the fiction for so very long but terrified of what the citizens will do if they find out. They beg the Sole Survivor to pretend to be an astronaut sent on a similar mission and offer a home here as well as currency (you can request caps instead).

You can find the people are suffering an immense case of cabin sickness as the Vault feels futuristic and beautiful in a Pre-War way even as there's things like class divisions, a brothel (men and women), and more. The PCs can help the Vault by choosing:

1. To tell everyone via speech checks.
2. To convince everyone the world they were going to inhabit is crap and they need to make a home journey.
3. To sabotage the illusion in a dramatic way, which leads to a riot.
