Zen against the Ipod

Funny how the subject of headphones popped up, I have had a pair of Sennheiser's for about 18 months now, and they are still pumping out some great bass :D

These were about AU$90 (US$50~60) and I highly recommend them. A bit chunk, but definitely worth the money!

Whenever I see someone with a pair of those oversized headphones on their head, I feel like pushing them in front of a car.

Those things look ridiculous as hell. Plus: them twerps buy the smallest mp3-player imaginable, then hook those little gadgets up with the biggest set of headphones they can find. Where's the logic in that?

Earplugs, man. Earplugs are the way to go. Get with the system.

I wear giant headphones at home because no one can see me looking like a NASA Engineer on a daily basis, but I couldn't imagine actually wearing them around outside.

I mean, how do people even get such thoughts in the first place?

Hey guys, I'm wearing muffling headphones, I can't hear the car coming, so I'm going to cross the road anay.. *smack*, *screech*,
"Oh my god, are you OK? No, you're not OK, oh shit someone call an ambulance, god damn it."

Wow 300$ for a pair of earplugs, thats grose :D

I would like to try them but i allways seem to destroy my earplugs in a few months :/ So it would probably be a bad investment :)

Wow guys.. thanks for all the info. Guess what I did today. I bought a "jam jacket" for my sweet little player.. only $8 at a doubtable chinese place. I was so pleased with how it fitted my apparatus so neatly and was just about to float along when.... it just didn't start anymore. It was like it had lost it's spirit when I putted the cheap jacket on it. It was devastating. I am leaving the states on thursday and it would so totally suck to have to leave it behind for the service job (I would have known how to get it home afterwards).

Anyway.. no music for the rest of the day. My player as alive as Han Solo deep frozen in carbonate laying in my backpack. So, when I get back home I pick it up again and try to start it.. Still dead. So I carefully take off the cheap jam jacket and give it a last try.,, And it works.

I was so relieved. But what's the deal with the jam jacket???

Its purpose is clearly stated in the name. Obviously it jams the player.

...which would be a good thing if the player got stolen; low-aiming criminals (stealing stuff of this nature) isn't known for being bright-heads, and thus the idea of removing the jammer doesn't find it's way to their thick heads. After realizing this, they will hopefully return it -probably all smashed though.

Also, perhaps the jammer sits too tight, and squeezes some device inside to the limit where it's simply just not working. Like the way you hold a bug; if you hold it too tight you end up with green goo over your hand.

I think I found the answer. The jacket is too tight. It squeezes not something inside, but actually a button on the outside which overrides (?) the main power button to do nothing.

It is quite annoying actually.. damn you cheap chinese people

a note on the earbuds ... always look for a nice thick cable and good jack ... i'm saying this because of a pair of ok sounding but horribly fragile Sony buds i had a long time ago ... Sony had (i dont know now) the bad habbit of making these ultra thin wires ... bad ideea :)

I'm an iPod fan, my 30 GB works just fine. There's really nothing that I can find to complain about, audio wise. Plus it works seamlessly with iTunes. I can't think of what I'd do without it.

The video feature isn't great. It drains your battery three times as fast, color quality isn't great, and a 4 minute video can take up almost a gig. Luckily, I hate TV, and just watch movies at home, so its not a big loss.

As for headphones, I go with the earplugs when I listen to it in puplic, but while I'm at my desktop at home, I use the Bose Noise Canceling headphones. If Jesus has a pair of headphones, they're probably those. Nuff said.

I have an older ZEN (20gb, sleek I believe it's called) player and although i like it a lot I think I'd pick up an ipod if I were to buy a new player soon.

Why? The ipod plays flac files with a free firmware replacement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockbox

For those of you that aren't familiar with the flac format, check this wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC

i'm not trying to say anything bad about either player but i think people are getting too much into these things ...

Flac is great but honestly i dont think there are that many mp3 players out there to really give you the fidelity needed for you to distinguish between flac and a good quality mp3 ..

this is esp. true for the ipod which has mediocre sound quality and fidelity at best - this improoves a bit with 3rd party earbuds but quality is still under the Zen if you ask me.

basically you get a player that can read a lossless format but cannot actually project the quality.

lossless codecs are great but realistically speaking without the proper audio equipment theyre just a placebo.

Choose Zen, just to oppose the mainstream, commercial giants, and their dictatorship'ish attitude.

Oh wait...

Anyway, i have (~had) both a Zen and an Ipod, and both are kinda cool. In the end i decided to give the Ipod away to a mate who was drafted and was getting bored on guard duties.. dunno, just something in Zen that tells me "Hey buddy. I'm your little private Jesus, let's start some musical sex in your pocket." And lo and behold, i never regretted.

Playa is a playa, amirite?

Good point. However, since I mostly download flacs it would be nice to save some trouble having to convert them to mp3 before taking them outside.

Alright. Time to move on again! I recently decided not to get new ear plugs but buy a sweet little gadget instead. It's a small box that lets you connect both mp3 player and cell phone at once. When the phone rings, the music fades. No missed calls... eva'. And, it works as a handsfree too.

So, I'm currently checking out two different pieces now. The first one is made by Tekkeon (never heard about them before).
It's the myTalker ET7000.

See how it hooks up neatly with the devices (no custom stuff made only for the apple-smapple) using regular sockets. The plugs that comes with it is exchangeable with the ones of your choice, which is great. Not leaving anyone behind with cheap chinese stuff for life.

It has a built in battery which lasts for like 120 hours in standby and 5 hours in action, and is recharged by USB (comp).

The competitor is the Jabra BT-325.

This one is very similar to the myTalker, except that it comes with a wall mount recharger. Lasts for like 240 hours standby, and 8 hours in action.

As for design I would say the myTalker gets me. I just don't like the cheap look of the Jabra. But then again, the Jabra is cheaper (At least till someone finds a cheaper way to get it in sweden than ordering it from the states). It lasts longer. And, I know the brand and it's simple to get (and therefor, probably easier to return when DOA).

Seems like a pretty obvious choice, but I'm asking you. What do you guys think? Do you know a better solution maybe?

I prefer a MP3 Player that just simply stores and plays music 5GB of storage space preferred. I dont need wireless, video, tv or any of that other crap they cram into the Ipod.
