ZeniMax forms Online division

ZeniMax doesn't have to buy FOOL. When Herve fails to gather the necessary amount of fundings (30 million) in 2 years (I think), the license automatically reverts to ZeniMax/Bethesda.

Herve not pulling the thing off would be a safe bet, but I doubt anyone with power at ZeniMax is that kind of gambler. We won't be needing to fear until after - if - Fallout 3 sells well.

They're doing an Oblivion with Raids, IMO ;)

Hey, any company with the guts to simplify their own series twice, pissing off their fans, and then buying another franchise to change to their own vision, pissing off the franchise's fans, has quite a bit of guts, when you consider the history of failure of franchise "betrayal."

Creative daring? Not really. But guts? Sure.

From my perspective point, such move might be a reason to sell content online directly to consumer such as patch or mod. It's already be done with Oblivion's useless horse armor.

Or, Zenimax is venturing into the hot but not new episode game service like Sam & Max.

Or...maybe they plan to do ES mmo or Fallout mmo... (imagine all the players can do are joining caravan)...

If it is TES online, the potential is there for quite an interesting gameworld - but they would have to go back and look at Daggerfall/Morrowind for inspiration. Oblivion online would be even blander than WoW, both from a visual standpoint and in terms of lore etc.

Can't say i'm interested in any of the current MMO's though. The genre seems to have regressed massively, in pretty much every way, since the heydays of UO. Darkfall looks quite interesting, but only time will tell if it lives up to it's hype.

I'd also add its a shame if it's the death knell of SP TES games, but the nail in the coffin there was Oblivion really, at least for myself.

I don't play MMO's, but a TES one could be sensible, seeing that interaction seems to be very poor in some of the SP games, so couldn't they leave that up to the players to try to fix without their resorting to modding.

A Fallout MMO would be a disaster.

I could see FOOL if they mapped the entire world, and limited each area's player count. And made all servers RP servers. And had fanatical moderators.

TES:Online was in the works around the time of Morrowind. I had a friend at BethSoft at the time. It got canned for one reason or another.
With Blizzard dominating the market (and the world, basically), I don't think BethSoft would be wise to consider trying to break into that with another TES title. However, I can't think of any other ZeniMax franchises that might even have a chance at beating the Blizzard juggernaut, and they DID specifically say they want to get into the MMO market... so thats interesting. Fallout definitely doesn't have a big enough fan base (yet?). So maybe they will revive TES:OL. Huh..

"#1 smash hit Dark Age of Camelot, a MMORPG considered one of the most influential online games of all time."

hahaha. aw man. Press releases crack me up. Now if it had been Ultima Online or something like that I would have agreed. But DAOC! come on!

Its not number 1 anything and its certainly not influential.
Mediocre game with Mediocre PvP.

Isn't Oblivion an MMO? Only without any other players, I mean...

Anyway, I bet it's a whole new IP, similar to TES but not really.

Huh... an MMO division, that's about as high a risk venture as I can think of right now, if it's not the cool new kid on the block when it hits... ouch....

And then the problem of what brand will they develop, I'd guess TES, but I just don't see how they could get the player base away from Blizzard whose main advantage is it's 8mil subscriber base, and it's fan interaction, and that pesky habit of giving series fans what they want (*grumbles about Starcraft 2*).

Beth take on Blizz in the MMO business? I give it long odds, say 5:1.

Perhaps if they plan to aim for another market, Europe?, Asia?, I'm pretty sure Korea is about taken with the Lineage games...

I know Zenimax can absorb the 70mil+ (I think 90 mil is a more realistic number for anyone serious about taking on the giants); however I question how many times they could absorb a miss of that size.

Right now I'd put FO3 as a coin-flip, and if that misses it's another 60mil dollar 'we missed it'.

This should be interesting, perhaps Pete will scheme a deal where some nextgen-2 or nextgen-3 console will come pre-installed with the MMO and set to automatically deduct the fee as part of the monthly service charge.

This has a fair chance of being one of the key moments the industry looks back to and says, "And here is where they really started to go downhill..." Of course it could also be the point when Beth "Made the bold move that took it to the top of the indusrty," I just give that longer odds...

This should be interesting to watch.

*IMHO, if they get the dialogue right (I know it's questionable, what with dumb dialogue already axed), but anyways if the dialogue is rich enough with enough options and skill integration, I can see FO3 hitting.

Edit: typos

Hey, at least it's likely that FOOL would be another spin-off and not being Fallout 4 or canon... as if it would matter anymore at this point.

Though I guess we're growing a thicker skin towards spin-offs these days. Resignation slowly creeps into even the most passionate of fans *he says with a sigh*
*expects NMA to be overrun by Fallout 3 fans in foreseeable future*

The end is near! (:=o

There is some much more dumb crap rolling towards us, seems so. :|

The sad thing about it is that there is such a mass of people who enjoy their dumb games. :?
Bethesdas games are so empty, empty games made for empty heads.

maybe a Star Trek morgue? wish you luck ZeniMax

There's already a Star Trek MMO in development (not by Bethesda).
And a Stargate MMO. And now maybe soon a TES and Fallout MMO... IS NOTHING SACRED???

ahh I was not aware StarTrekmmo is already being worked on - http://www.startrekonline.com/

some more imaginative possibilities:
What im thinking is perhaps more mobile phone games and mmos. Sure the mmo genre is getting a bit stale, the only way I can see to keep it alive is to make it even more addictive and allowing people to play on their iphone-minis and clones.

A direct clone of the isometric fallout engine on a mobile could yield some interesting results. Might appeal to the stock-trader/fallout afficianado around 2010

The only way I'm ever playing an MMO is if there was no monthly fee and they found a way to cull the retards. T'ain't gonna happen.

Anarchy Online is the closest(The game is pretty complicated, so it wards off retards), but is still horrible. I can't stand the constant grinding.

I played a completely text-based MUD longer than I ever played a MMO. That's pretty sad.

to each his own...

MMOs arent exactly deep, but some can be fun enough to play for a while.

I would play a MMO only if it would allow me to play someone similar to Lord Humungus :) .

Dark Age was a great MMO for alot of reasons. First and formost it has incredible PVP, regardless of what the previous poster said.

PVP was great because group tactics worked and they worked well. AOE Mez and than specificly targeting the important enemies ment the difference between being destroyed and dominating in combat.

Online PVP stats and Realm abilities kept the game interesting as well.

I would say the only huge downsides to the game where the fact that some classes were useless (thane), PVE was super boring, and the game hasn't really advanced enough since the begining so the population is falling off which causes a huge chain reaction in PVP.

Some people claim that the only good PVP system is UO because you could go anywhere and kill anyone. I say that is stupid, I'd much rather have a PVP system that rewarded skill and tactics than one that rewarded time sinking.

I trust Mythic and the developers of DAoC. If I had to guess I would say Beth is moving towards FOOL. The Fantasy market is just too saturated and I think developers are afraid of creating a new world for online play only.
