While it would be wonderful to pretend Fallout 4 doesn't exist, it does. So instead of complaining about it, is there a project that's rewriting the vanilla game? Because in whatever way I can, I'd like to help. I know most people would say why bother to essentially create a whole new game, and that's a good point, but if there's some project seriously trying to do it, I want in.

Only thing I can think of is FROST which completely cuts out all story/quests and turns it into a masochistic, survival simulator. There's also alternative start mods.

The only way to replace the story is to overhaul it entirely with something different. There's very little that can be done to influence the vanilla story because of how intertwined companions and quests are, not to mention the trouble of getting around voiced-dialogue.

I understand all that. I wasn't asking what are the obstacles, only if someone was trying. I couldn't lead such a project, but I could help. Granted it probably means cutting out dialogue for the player character, but given the quality of the writing, that's no loss.

Only way to rewrite FO4 is to rip apart the vanillla story and start anew. I'd be willing to help on such a project.

So would I. I wish I had the modding skills to lead a project, cause there's SO much I would change. I'd start with Vault 111, and make it fully functioning Vault and Sanctuary would be a Vault City. The experiment remains, only 1 thousand were frozen and a thousand were assigned Vault duties. I'd have the spouse survive (or rather be resuscitated by medical personnel), the other people still in stasis, and the characters being unfrozen for 10 years with a new family to worry about. They'd have given up on Shaun long ago, until one of them goes on a mission and finds Mama Murphy, and suddenly the leads start coming in.

I'd also like to have branching quests in Cabot House: to either see Lozano's character to it's fruition, or master the artifact yourself, true Lovecraft fashion.

The problem with that is that Fallout 4 has so many mechanics that restrict modding. Then there is the voice protagonist, so if someone would remove all the story from Fallout 4 and nonsense quests it would need voice actors to replace the voice for the new quests and story.
I am not sure if it can be done yet without Fallout 4 SE, and since the SE people moved to Skyrim Special Edition I have no idea when they will return to FO4.
Then we also have the fact that Fallout was never as attractive to modders as Skyrim (and we can't forget the modding restrictions and how many things are hardcoded so they can't be changed) so most modders moved to Skyrim Special Edition because they have no interest in Fallout, and with the next game from Bethesda being almost assured another TES I don't think modders will return to FO4 either.

Unfortunately the truth is that almost no one (of the great modders that this project would need to be part of) wants to mod Fallout 4 anymore and no one would want to do something like this because it would take years and modders are not even sure if it is possible due to hardcoded stuff that Bethesda put in the game and the lack of SE.

FROST is the easiest way of doing away with the story, since it just disables all of it pretty much and makes the game just be a shooting frenzy. And even that will take quite a while to be totally completed.

I would say that this will probably have to at least wait for the SE to be made, and/or more great modders to return to work on FO4.

It's even harder to mod in Fallout 4 than it is in NV, right?

Depends on what you want to mod really, Fallout 4 has more hardcoded stuff (like the perk poster and the 4 dialogue options for example), there are ways to work around those but they are not refined, they also feel clunky ingame.
Some modders prefer the Papyrus scripting others don't, I never made scripts for Skyrim or Fallout 4 so I can't say my opinion on that.
If you want to make a quest mod you should spend hours cutting, splicing and editing the main characters voice files to make them sound good on your quest mod or most players will whine about the silent main character.

If someone hated Fo4, i don't think they will find the will to mod it from the ground. Better to just ignore it even exist.

I was going to do a sort of 'redux' fanfic where I basically rewrite the entirety of Fallout 3&4.

But alas, life caught up with me.
Maybe at sometime in the distant future.

I'm loving that idea, man. Here's how I would personally rewrite it:

Make the player character a run-away synth from the Institute, although you don't figure that out until later on in the game.
Diamond City is more crowded and dirtier, yet organized. A lot of vagrants live there. (think of the tanker vagrants from San Francisco)
Make the Gunners a joinable faction.
Take the Brotherhood out, or at least revise the BoS and make them more like the FO1 BoS.
Vault 111 is essentially Vault City, and all the residents are pre-war Vault stock.
Develop the Minutemen Militia more (minus the kill-loot-repeat "uhhh another settlement needs ur help lmao" bullshit)
    Make Goodneighbor a Ghoul City

It would be kinda point mainly because of the voiced protagonist. This destroys a lot of the potential for a mod to made on fallout 4. Sure you can make pretty landscapes etc but it seems very had to make dialogue and quests. You might as well sift your attention to FNV or even fo3.

I personally hate papyrus scripting. I am not a heavy scripter but it is defiantly more advance than that used in NV. Although it has it limited i much prefer it.

The dialogue in fallout 4 completed turns me off modding as alot of what I do in NV revolves around dialogue because you can script of it and run quests off it pretty easily. You can also get away with no voice acting in NV where as fallout 4 they mods I have played defiantly need voice acting. A main one voice actor an NPC's meaning you need many more voice actors then in NV. Voice acting is probably done later in mod life aswell once it can attract attention with some work to show.

I guess if you just want a shooting sim then thats fine you can do that pretty eassy but a mod that turns fallout 4 into an actually fallout game just forget it

As much as I would like to write dialogue and story for a mod like that, all it would do is draw more people to buy Fallout 4, which would enforce Bethesda's push towards making low effort, moddable games.

    That I couldn't stomach.

And yet... why should any of us care? They already don't make Fallout games, and sell them mainly to non-Fallout players; they just [ab]use the Fallout IP to drape their hiking simulators. But their commercial activities give the rest of us a legal outlet to use the IP for actual [or I should say virtual / total conversion] Fallout titles that can be in keeping with the proper series —if we choose to make them. The cost is that they own the result, but they cannot truly use it ~it's like bile to their target consumers. We'd get to use it, and have better Fallout sequels to play.

I totally understand that point. Fallout 4 as is, is total garbage. And I don't want to encourage that. On the other hand, I've already spent the 90 bucks I won't get back, and despite knowing hat the sunken cost fallacy is, I just can't let it go because for me 90 bucks is a fuckton of money.

Some team with knowhow could try to make a Wasteland 2 total conversion... not to Fallout 4, that's not going to work, but to something Fallout. An Obsidian developer a long time a go jokingly passed on an idea about porting New Vegas to Wasteland 2 engine.

Well... (much as I'd like the WL2/NV conversion)... It's actually [more or less] legal to do a FO3 or 4 conversion with the official tools, and distribute a mod that upends the official Bethesda release of either game, and wouldn't likely be pursued in the US courts. I do think that the NV version of the engine could match or better the WL2 engine, if handled by experience Gamebryo-modder/devs.
