Fallout 1/2 leave Steam, Bethesda working to get them back on it fast

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics seem to have been removed from Steam a little later than the GOG versions, but Bethesda lets us know on Twitter that they're working to get it back on Valve's service:
We’re working to return classic @Fallout games (1, 2, Tactics) to Steam and will provide an update when they’re ready to go.
They're also apparently considering other options (which would include GOG), though it doesn't seem to be a sure thing:
we’ll have a look at other options once we handle Steam.

Why is it a problem, anyway? Is it just a legal issue with paperwork, or are they really fixing the intro now?

The rights have gone from Interplay to Bethesda. This means that Steam has to make sure nothing from Interplay's offering remains & everything is migrated to Bethesda's.

Easiest way to do that is by pulling it all, and redeploying with Bethesda's credentials. But that also means modifying some game files etc for licensing purposes.

Interplay's spinning logo and the music was an integral part of Fallout's intro. They even styled it to look like something from Fallout's world.
Too bad they'll probably remove it and replace it with something inferior :seriouslyno:

I agree. Fortunately I was able to pick up the copies from GOG in time.

I'll miss the fanfare if I ever buy the Bethsoft versions, but that isn't likely. The original copies I own already will always be my go to versions.

It's not a given that they'll remove the fanfare. What we do know is they have to change terms of service and copyright notices. That doesn't mean they have any right or reason to remove all traces that Interplay produced the game.

I'm glad that the titles have passed to Bethesda. It's my hope we might see some sort of legacy support or perhaps a new engine rework for the games to help them last into the 21st century. Really, Bethesda should form a team and do a complete expansion for 1/2, adding hours of new gameplay options/graphics/text etc. But, who am I kidding thats just wishful thinking, theres no real profit there, just mad street cred from us to them. Maybe though, if they spent some time with the first two games, they could get a better feel for what Fallout was trying to have in store,

If they were to do that then people would realize what a crappy game Fallout 3 is and they don't want that.

Why do people have this obsession with remaking everything?

Just because we'll never see a game like Fallout 1/2 again UNLESS they are remade. Although Wasteland 2 comes to a real nice middle ground of old and new, waiting for my gaming rig to arrive so I can play it again. This Inspiron notebook can't really handle the game all that well. Plus, I don't want them to remake Fallout 1/2, I just want them to spend some time and money updating the engine to be more compatible out of the box and maybe add some content. Killap did some great work on the Restoration Project for Fallout 2, Bethesda should bundle some of the good work the community has done and make it readily available/easy to install for the masses to enjoy. Ive tried to go back to regular vanilla fallout 2 after the RP, and everything feels so....quiet and lonely, like the game isnt complete or something.

I just think it would be a shame to let the game die off over the next few years. Besides, what better way for a company to convince you to buy ANOTHER copy of a game you love than to offer up some new content/additional features. Hell, I've bought 1/2 atleast 4 times each already might as well for go for one more.

The restoration Project is already for the masses to enjoy, it's free. You want them to monetize Killap's work?

Also Bethesda aren't exactly known for being good at optimizing their games.

They didn't fixed anything of Arena nor Daggerfall which is full of bugs.
So I don't expect they make FO1,2 better.
they are lazy idiots.

For FO1/2, unless there are lots of "Interplay" in other texts, they would just replace the Interplay's spinning logo movie, edit the copyright messages in misc.msg & credits.txt, and repack the files into the main DATs. Probably also edit the manual PDFs.

I'm really curious if they're going to remove sfall from GOG/Steam version as well. It's a third party software published under the GNU/GPL license, Bethesda doesn't have any right for selling it. Timeslip should sue their pants off!

I don't expect them to remove the interplay logo. I suspect the approach will be that Interplay/BI was the developer & that Bethesda is now the publisher.

There is no rational reason to remove the spinning logo, except out of spite.

But a lot of other files have to be modified as well to add the necessary info.

Tiny correction about the GPL. This license doesn't mean that the software which is published under it can't be sold. In contrary. The main purpose of this license is to keep the source free not stop any selling. So if any changes are made by a third party it is mamdatory that the source is published for free too. So if Bethesda/Interplay/GOG (as far as I know doesn't include the Steam version the patch) or whoever changes Timeslips source for their own project then they have to publish it under GPL License again. If they use his unmodified original then a link to his source site and a proper mention of author and license is enough to confirm to the license.
