PC Gamer's In Depth Look at Tyranny

Ragemage

Wept for Zion
Thanks to @Spacemunkey for providing the link for this, but anyway: http://www.pcgamer.com/obsidians-tyranny-explores-what-happens-after-the-bad-guys-win/

PC Gamer apparently got a really good look at Tyranny yesterday. In the article they discuss how you, as the Fatebinder, can change the fate (ohohoho) of the world, they talk a little about how companions are going to work, and they also talk about the combat system. It looks to be very, very good.

My favorite part of the article is when it talks about how you can change the world before you even start the game. They go over a place called Plainsgate and how it changed depending on how the player decided in what way Kyros won the war. It sounds like you can even change factions you're aligned or fighting against before the game even starts. That sounds like it would provide a lot of replayability! Go read the article for yourself, it sounds amazing.

Well based off the interview and how you can interact with your companions, it sounds like you CAN be good to some extent. You can make your companions love you for example, as opposed to hate you, though both have benefits. It's Obsidian, I'm sure there'll be some ways you can be "good". They're all about choices. I wouldn't expect full-on good though.

yeah testing of how our character escaping from archtype trope is deciding factor of rpg
since this is about "for evulz" plot, i'm gonna play reverse from what i do when plating evil in other game

I imagine that they're going to play with the distinction between metaphysical evil and practical evil. After all, if you're in charge of some laborers if you were to mistreat them that would be evil in a metaphysical sense, but if you were to instead make sure they're well fed and healthy and are working under reasonable conditions (put up a guardrail so you don't have to keep replacing the ones that fall to their doom, say) you will probably get better results, but that won't be nearly as evil (unless maybe what they're building is in the greater service to evil.)

These sorts of distinctions are fun to play with and something that every tabletop old hand seems to like to do when dealing with games where evil and good are actual extant forces rather than vague notions (e.g. the angel who tortures criminals, the demonologist who summons the hordes of hell for public works projects, etc.)

I hope Obsidian releases some new game play footage soon, I keep checking Twitter like a teenage girl for more information.

Hey, just make sure if you see something you post it here so we can all see it! I'm keeping an eye on it myself. I hope they'll do some stuff to the website. I want to see more of the map. At least now we know Beast under population doesn't = animal, it equals some kind of beast race. Whatever that might entail.

Fallout 4: Never again.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever getting on the hype bus again.

But yea I'm sure it will be good. Still waiting for my Wasteland 3 or new post-apocalyptic RPG since Fallout 4 is not an RPG.

Knowing Obsidian, "good" actions may carry dire consequences much like Witcher series.

Whoever came up with the idea to have character creation affect the game world is a fucking genius, it makes role-playing that much easier and, gives a reason for me to try out builds that I never would have touched in a normal RPG. I just hope the game does justice to the concept.

Thanks for sharing! The fact that they said they've been kicking around the idea of Tyranny for a while gives me hope that this game will really be fleshed out. I wish he'd given a better estimate for how long they've been brainstorming this game other than "a while" though.

Also, in the interview, the director confirmed you can make some morally good choices @eissa . He said it'll be harder though since you're surrounded by evil and thus more difficult to get away with.

I'm just glad Obsidian is in a position to start doing things that they've been kicking around. So far everything I've heard about how this game is coming is just getting me more and more stoked about it's release. It sounds like they are looking to keep rolling on the resurgence of the classic style cRPG, while still bringing something fresh to the table.

Even though the director of this game wasn't actually involved with New Vegas it certainly sounds like he's taking a lot from it such as the faction system, which I'm excited for. One thing that miffed me a little was that the lady giving the interview talked about how NV only had 2 major factions and asked about how the game would play out between 2 factions, but she didn't ask anything about smaller factions, which is what I want to know about. I liked how in New Vegas you had these big looming massive factions (NCR and Legion) but you also had a bunch of little factions you could get involved with, or slaughter if you so chose, like the Boomers and the Great Khans, who came with their own storylines and missions.

It also sounds like once again you'll be able to kill everyone no matter who they are, just like in NV, PoE, and Wasteland 2. Thus I think we can safely say that, if we can meet Kyros, we can most likely kill him and take over ourself.

I think Tyranny looks and sounds good too, but after this, I have to blacklist PC gamer's opinions of games.

Oh Lord that's disgusting. PC Gamer wasn't really rating thos game or speculating anything though in what I linked, they just talk about what Obsidian showed them at a closed-door conference. You should read it!

One other thing from the new interview @Spacemunkey linked that sounds a little bad is the fact that party size is smaller. You can only have 4 in your party at once now as opposed to 6 in PoE. On the other hand the director also said this made the game better optimized and let them focus more on battle tactics and whatnot so maybe it's for the best.

Also no companion romance. Sorry guys.

I remember this took me a second to find my comment.

I'm not even sure why you bothered trying to even communicate with that abomination. I hope it didn't infect you with any diseases from your brief time near it.

I'm almost tempted to go blast that guy but it's from 4 months ago and I hate necro'ing threads. "plenty of evil decisons" my fucking ass, there's only 9 in the whole game. I've made a list about it before.
