Possible Interview with Chris Avellone

Ragemage

Wept for Zion
Hello fellow NMAers. Some of us "new bloods" got together on a different forum page involving what Obsidian employees thought when it came to FO4 and said to ourselves, "If MrMattyPlays can get an interview with Chris Avellone, why can't we?"

Therefore, that's what we're going to try and do. User @Millim is going to email him and ask him if he would like to do it, but we need your help. We need a way to interview him of course, such as a podcast site we could use, but the most important thing we need are questions. Questions we can ask Mr. Avellone. It isn't an interview if there's no questions being asked.

For those who don't know, Chris Avellone was one of the lead writers for Fallout 2, Fallout New Vegas + New Vegas's DLCs, and many other RPG games such as Planetscape: Torment.

I thought it would be a great idea if we let everyone on NMA get involved with this. So post questions below, I'll try to keep tab of them, write them down, and then, if this interview happens, we should have a big bundle of questions to ask Mr. Avellone.

For the record, no questions regarding his thoughts on Fallout 4 as, in the interview with MrMattyPlays, he actually seems to like Fallout 4. We don't want to hurt the man's feelings. Of course he could have just been doing that for Matty's benefit but I'd rather not risk it. So list your questions below, let's get this ball rolling!

EDIT: For the record, this is going to be a serious interview. Try to keep the questions serious. Please and thank you. I'll be writing down all the questions recieved in a Word document. Once we get enough questions and a confirmation from Mr. Avellone, we'll set an official date.

EDIT 2: Here is the last interview that NMA did with Chris Avellone. Please at least skim over it so you don't ask questions we've already asked him in the past.

I think it's a great idea to have a Q & A with Chris, but you might want to get your facts straight before starting the interview. Chris Avellone had nothing to do with Fallout 1.
Just so you don't look silly.

I've a got a few tbf (If we do it as a Podcast, I'll prob end up in the chat anyway).
But here it goes
1. what was your initial thoughts on Fallout 1 when you first played it?
2. Do you have any idea where the Tactics series could have left?
3. If you could design a DLC for Fallout 4, what would you do?
4. Have you played Brotherhood of Steel, if so, what are your thoughts?

And questions not related to Fallout
5. Obsidian were interested in a Knights of the Old Republic 3 before it was cancelled, can you tell us of any concepts that could have made its way to that game?
6. If you could either work on a sequel to a game you were involved with, or remake a game you worked on (besides Fallout of course), what would it be?

Sorry for the wording in question 6, it's 4.43 in the morning here ><

Yea, was going to point this out but had to second guess myself. Before we do any sort of interview, anybody involved in the interview itself (I'd imagine there would be more than one host) should read (or re-read) The Fallout Bible; I know I'll be doing another read through of that.

Hahaha, and this is why I'm not the one giving the interview, just advertising it and helping create it. Thanks though, I updated the main post.

- His thoughts on player agency, use in games he is involved in, response he has gotten from players.
- How does it feel having fans ranging from casual to hardcore, but mostly that the games he has worked on have been considered, "best rpg ever" or that those works set the stage for others in the industry.
- His advice on video games as a career choice for those interested.
- His thoughts on Mods for games including NV 1 and 2. The restoration pack. Does he use mods? What mods does he like?
- Does he still play the FO1/2/NV?
- What does he think of MNA?
- What does he think of Mr. Fish?
- Excluding his games, what are his current favorites?
- Do all/some/no Super Mutants keep memories post dipping?
- Why does Marcus insist on shredding my player?

That's all I can come up with for the moment.

So are we going for one host or multiple? I think the original plan was one host, but I'm not sure which would work best.
I mean, I personally like the idea of having 2-3 hosts just to really keep the conversation moving, but I guess whatever works best for everyone else is what we'll go with.

I have a pretty well detailed Email from the man himself on this question.
Maybe I should put a topic around it or so. (Even through it's more specifically RPGs).

I think we can take something away from the MrMatty interview with Mr. Avellone. We could have more than one host, but I feel these hosts should have different opinions instead of all being on the same page when it comes to Fallout. That way there'll be more question diversity outside of what's being written down here. Otherwise you'll have MrMatty's interview where it's 4 different people all chirping the same tune about how Fallout 4 is the best game ever while Mr. Avellone just has to sit there and smile.

Yeah, I felt pretty bad for Chris listening to that. It was basically just the Bethdrones talking the whole time while Chris just politely listened.

I like 1:1 personally and would like it to be a seasoned member, perhaps someone from the NMA Podcast team.
Or maybe we could do something like a seasoned member, a newer member (but not too new), and Chris? That way there'd be fairly differing opinions, and it could allow for a little more dialogue than just the questions.

If this is the case, I'd definitely be willing to volunteer. I mean, I've played the games, I've read the Bible, and you bet your ass I've got a succulent voice to match.

Yeah, I don't mind being a Host, my opinions on Fallout 2 are pretty bare at the moment (I really need to get back into it).
But I've had a history with Obsidian (going back to the KOTOR 2 day... of which I don't remember much of it, I'm sure I'll get there through).

But if we are doing 1:1. then I'll pass.
I'm no good at 1:1 chats and I'm not as experienced as others here.
