Profound understanding of human psyche can be found in texts/anecdotes all way back to ancient Egypt - down to understanding the artifice of religion itself as a population control tool. I bet this kind of complete understanding of human behavior goes back way beyond recorded history

As smart as now, pretty much. I love whenever I find ancient quotes like these, and preferably un-poetry-i-fied, like... how people spoke in reality. I've had grown-ass adults *doubt me* when I tell them people spoke NORMAL in viking Norway or ancient Rome, people seem to really expect some sort of "elevated" "fine" "speech", like they were all poets

But in real quotes, you find a lot of very cool stuff, including real indications of cleverness full well matching what we're used to today. A favorite of mine, for example, is a famous rune-stone in Sweden. A lot of observers want to *force* a serene seriousness on the inscription, that I personally refuse to accept

The rune stone - elaborately decorated and carved, simply states (something along the lines of) - "These runes are enchanted, this stone will not be removed. I have seen your death."

People can force "ritualistic significance" all they want, but to me, this is a fantastic fuckin troll, 1000AD. This is someone who KNEW the implications, and giggled to themselves the entire time they carved: The rock still stands in Sweden, not in a museum, but on a meadow, where it was first found
