A Vault Suit Costume?

I'm making a suit right now. I always figured the vault suit would be much like a mechanic's type jumpsuit or so. Needs to be rugged with many pockets to carry stuff in.

I wanted to make one last year but didn't have the time to sew it all up. I should be finished later today. Once it's done... i'll post pictures and start taking orders.

I made one for Halloween this year. Due to my lack of textile skill I have used yellow tape and a blue jumpsuit.

By doing only low curvature areas with single pieces and using several pieces for sharper curves it can be done fairly well. Also the bright yellow of yellow electrical tape is similar to the color of the actual vault suit stripes.

Bumping this old thread for relevant update.

Just finished this vault dweller costume for Halloween/Youmacon this year.

Very nice costume! :D

I have one question: Is it one suit, two pieces? If one suit, where did you buy the blue coveralls? Can't seem to find any, and if I do, it is a dark navy color.

Doesn't anyone get the fact that you cannot wear this suit if your fat?

I wouldn't wear one.

Well, perhaps their vault was designed to test on weight...

The only problem with me making a vault suit is not because I'm fat (I lost 30+ pounds, woo for me), it's sheer laziness.

This one is one of the better ones I've seen on the internet:

Pretty basic, the blue is off, but at least it fits him well.

That one's actually believable. It's pretty good, he even tried to imitate the Vault Dweller's hair by the looks of it.

I was on deviantart looking for some more examples of other cats' vault suits (found a bunch on flickr), and, damn, there is some messed up Fallout fanart out there.

Feel free to post links...

I would think spandex would be the right material to use for the vault suits. I always assumed they were of an unknown fiber material that was possibly a combination of different fabrics.

Sure, spandex would probably be the best material, I mean, look at the character sprite. But then there's the ending shot of the Vault Dweller, and it doesn't seem as tight, maybe because of exposure to the elements, and the rips and tears. I would think it's a mixture of materials.

For the sake of real life costumes, thank God that not everyone adheres to the strict "it's spandex!" rule. And for the one that is spandex (on the first page), ever wonder why there is only a picture of him from the back.

Why dont they create something that you could wear in your ordinary life? I mean the general design of the vault suit isnt soo extraordinary. If you would do a nice slimfit T it would look pretty decent I think.

Reading this thread makes me both glad and ashamed I never carried through with my plan to make a costume. I imagine mine would have been better looking, but even the best of those look so ridiculous that I doubt I wouldn't have looked similar.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller
