About mods for Fallout 3?

I am just curious, maybe this doesnt even belong in this section but since it isnt really about to "make" a mod and more a question about if someome eventualy knows something about it that has nothing to do with NMAs mod section.

Question is if anyone knows about a Fallout 3 total conversion mod? Or at least some project that might be in development?

What I am thinking about is something that goes deeper then just a slight visual change like aditional armor, textures or weapons. Something that radicaly changes the game, its style or what ever (kinda like the Lord of the Rings project someome started for Oblivion which seems to have died though). Searching on google usualy ends with the Fallout 3 Nexus which is ... well full with mods but rather just smaller changes.

I am just curious if someome knows anything and would post a link if possible so one can could check out how far they are or what they want to achieve.

Hi Crni Vuk,

Well there is this "Fallout 1 to Fallout 3" mod some people are or were working on, but I can not find it anymore.

I was also curious to find out if there were any Total Conversions for Fallout 3, but so far I haven't found any.

Heh, so much for FO3 being popular.

NMA's F3 modding never got of the ground. Honestly the only place worth keeping an eye on is Fallout 3 nexus, and even that's filled to the brim with lulzy mods and nudeskins. It's an effect of Fallout 3's audience, I'm afraid, that good mods are hard to come by.

TC mods are a lot of work, so no surprise there aren't many/any. I see a "not Fallout" and "WH40K" TC but that's obviously of no interest. Dunno if anything's in the works really.

I have been thinking about re-working the whole game with the GECK, re-write almost all the dialogue, new voice actors and other such things.

or just a whole new plot line.

Might as well stop thinking about it, then. Impossible, period.

And a waste of time. You'd be better off modding the 1 and 2.

well yeah, I have already thought something like that would be the case.

Though Fo's 3 audience cant be much different to Oblivions and some people did there as individuals quite impressive things someome even so far to make a transformer vehicle for the player to work playing some kind of robot that could transform in a bike or something and shoot bolts of plasma or spells or what ever.

Though true is that even Oblivion lacks "totall conversion" mods or at least a good one I have seen while funny enough Morrowind got some really talented people and interesting projects someone even went so far to make a AvP mod for Morrowind with Alienqueens, Predators, their weapons and even quests.

Thats exactly why I asked it here if people would know "anything" ... that is more then all this "lulz see my pink kitty powerarmor" crap the nexus is filled with. By the way while its nice that they have so many files its so bad organised finding even a decent weapon mod or anything is hard work since people can upload their stuff and many dont care to even place it in the correct category.

I came across a pretty extensive recommended Fallout 3 mod list here
Several "overhaul" type mods listed, in addition to other must have UI changes.

Worth checking out in my opinion.

Yeah, I would also really like to do a TC mod, but you always run into the following problems,

You need time.
You need motivated people, plus keeping them motivated.
You need a plan, a schedule and a deadline, otherwise there is no point to a fan project.

I still carry the dream/desire to work on a design team, that is why I asked Chris Parks if I could help out with his next project.

To be honest I spend lots of time at the Fallout 3 Nexus so I'm sure I know most of the bigger mods.
As far as I'm concerned - there are only a few good mods that add or change towns / add new lands etc.
I.e : Arefu Expanded 1.7 is pretty good.
However - even those better are just "work in progress" so there's nothing like some bigger quest / new land mod for Oblivion.
Too much work for no coin I guess.
I've heard about some TC mods - but never even seen a Alpha stage of those. It's like most of TC projects - they end after few weeks, when people realize what they are going against.

PS. The Eagle has landed - is a WIP conversion that makes u play the main quest (altered one) as Enclave. Hope they finish this one.

As many has written, there aren't really any TC releases, but there are a number of large overhauls and some large quest mods. The thread linked by killap contains a list of some of the best mods out there. When it comes to deeper gameplay overhauls, Fallout Wanderers Edition or Arwens Realism Tweaks have some fairly radical gameplay changes - among loads of tweaks and changes, both mods actually force you to eat, drink and sleep if you want to stay your best!

While mods like these change the feel of the gameplay, there are much to few mods that change the quests for realism, immersion and consequences. There are a few mods that edit the dialogue of the player (such as Better Prompts that removes that awful "[Intelligence] So you fight the good fight"). I think that the main reason for this lack is that such mods take a long time to make, are likely to be incompatible with a lot of other mods, and if the quest modder really didn't like the quest in the first place ... why try to fix it?

The lack of TCs is likely due to the fact that they take a lot of time to make. Even with a handful of inspired and experienced modders it may take years, depending on their ambition.

I would have no issue to wait years you know. I am very familiar with the way "good" (or letz just say "complex") mods go usualy as I enjoyed for very long time not just mods like Day of Defeat for HL2 but as well certain mods for Unreal like Tactical Ops, Red Orchestra (and now Darkest Hour!), but also many of the mods released for good old Baldurs Gate like Solaufein mod and those Imoen expanded things well as far as some got translated at least been some time.

Question is just if there are even any plans or at least something to keep an eye on for the case that it might see a release in the future, if it takes years to make something good happen so be it! Good things need time.

Classic Fallout TC

Warhammer TC

Only two that I know of :).

BTW, the main reason you don't see a lot of TCs is that there is almost NO documentation on how to do a lot of things with the GECK. We've been piecing things together slowly and have plans to write a good number of training manuals to help the community in future endeavors, but it's taking us a lot of time just to learn how to do the things we want, and we're still VERY early in development.
