Age of Decadence - the real crpg in the spirit of Fallout 2

Also fuck you VD why for make combat so hard. After talking my way out of every fight situation I get sent to the second city and get jumped by assassins sent from the guard captain. Fuck him.
You threatened him and forced him to do what he didn't want. He didn't like that.

You have 3 options there:

- convince the captain
- threaten him
- convince the local lord to have all the survivors killed

So, if you can't convince the captain, have him killed. It's not what's best for the town and the noble house and the survivors, but it's what's best for you.

Yeah I need to start again. I spent to many points in lore and can't pass the speech checks so I am pretty much fucked.

VD the game is great keep it up man.

This thread would be probably merged with Fallout-like games, if there's no discussion, but if there is, we got space.
I found myself very impressed by that incoming game, that is currently at beta stage.

According to what i see.

- The setting is original "a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire." (i hope the Low magic is really LOOOWWW)
- The graphics are impressives, especially from indies.
- It is a single player turn-based rpg
- There are 7 endings.
- The focus seems not about killing creatures, but humans interactions and diplomacy
- There will be 20 locations, not 9999999 "points of interest", so it feels like there is more focus, and less open-world crap.

Let's hope they will stick to their promises. If that so, i will be even more excited than for Wasteland...

Should it be given more support, or i am over-enthusiastic ?
Should an incoming Fallout looks like that ?
Anyway, 2014 seems promising...

(PS: of course, we still know nothing about the storyline or the balance, but the setting and general gameplay seems awesome)

Seems we could delete my post or merge it with the old thread.

PS: When i speak about fallout-like rpg, i tell about gameplay and what seems the focus of the game, gameplaywise. Of course, the setting, the themes, the story and the potential humor wouldn't be the same. (except the post-apocalyptic feeling)

After trying the demo, i don't think i will play a combat-oriented character.

At current status, i does not only seem a lot hard, but also somehow boring. It's early stage, but i don't think you have much option when the fight started. It is either your stronger, or you are not. No randomness, no trick, not many attacks. Plus, the game seems to guide you toward a non-combat approach, for the most part.

I love the combat in the game. Especially with spear. And imo it gets better when you increase your combat skills and don't get owned that often anymore.

I totally disagree with you. Combat oriented mercenary was one of the characters I enjoyed most and there are quite a few things you can do to win even with a weakling:
  • there are loads of different attack types and weapons,
  • you can make loads of different stuff with alchemy (poison, stats enhancing drugs, bombs, Molotov cocktails)
  • enhance your weapon and armor with crafting
  • throw nets and bolas on your enemies to severely reduce their perception, AP and other stats
  • you can intelligently choose your position in the battle field (which has a pretty big effect)

Even with a loremaster who had 4 Attack and 8 Dexterity I managed to defeat the most powerful thugs in Maadoran and become Arena master by using nets, poison and some tactics.

Tried the demo and its great. Personally, I like how skills need to be combined, just like in real life. I do agree however that disguise should require an actual disguise instead of it being overly dependent on a particular stat (although I understand it is still an unfinished product).

I do wonder how one would balance out peoples desires to play either diplomatic or combat based characters, but again, unfinished product.

I don't have a problem with complaints, its part of the development process but everyone here could leave out the personal insults and sarcasm.

As to having NPC squaddies, its a mixed bag truly. How can one allow NPC companions yet not have it devolved into I play speech characters so I recruit fighters only. In the end, its up to VD to decide whatsa going to be the focus.

Combat actually isn't as hard as reputed, but it does take practice and is very unforgiving to newbies.

AoD is going to be a cult classic.

I dunno man, granted my char isn't fight oriented, killing Crassius/Cassius seems to be a very random affair. With basic leather legion armor and the starting dagger, he does small amounts of damage but yea occasionally gets enough criticals AKA weapon expertise, enough to kill me. However, if I don a helmet, Lorica Segmetata, the classic tower shield and the same dagger, the same guy all of a suddenly crits almost all of the time. If thats not a bit strange, the fact that he is some loremaster/civvy should mean hes nice and squishy, not some badass fight I would expect from tangoing with a imperial soldier.

My fucking God. When you say "in the spirit of Fallout 2", you are not joking! O.O This looks awesome! I'm glad people are still making games like they used to (only prettier)... Without a doubt, if this ever comes up on sale, I'll be sure to grab it in a heartbeat, but for the time being, I'm just going to stare at it with interest. Though who knows, I haven't tried out the demo just yet, so that might win me over enough to forgo any and all fiscal caution and just dive in ASAP! =D

The demo was enough to not only get me to pre-order it, but also donate extra on top of the $25 selling price.

I'm extremely critical/stingy when it comes to buying games as a matter of principle rather than financial state. I've literally only bought a total of 5 games in the last 10 years including AoD... of the other 4, one was an MMO that a friend got me into back in 2004 (IIRC) that I played regularly for at least 4-5 years, two were admitted guilty splurges (the two StarCraft 2 CE's, and will probably get the third when it comes out-- don't judge me :P ).

The other (HOMM VI) I wish I hadn't bought and was actually the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" for me making the decision to refuse to pay any amount of money for anything without extensively sampling it first and then being thoroughly impressed with the product "as a whole" after doing so.
