One of our attentive readers, 4too, pointed out to us that the aircraft carrier seen in the latest concept art of Fallout 3 appears to be the USS Oriskany, which was commissioned as an aircraft carrier on 25 Sep 1950 and which was sunk in 2006 after 25 years of active service. The image used is taken from the picture of the Oriskany being brought into Pensacola, Florida. radnan made this image for a closer look:

Was this the Ship they sunk to create the artificial reef? I think there was a documentary on National Geographic OR the Discovery channel about it.

I like the comparison photograph's that where used in the picture Great work.

Yeah, it is:
Gulf of Mexico, May 17, 2006 — Ex-Oriskany was sunk 24 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Fla., to form an artificial reef. The 888-foot ship took about 37 minutes to sink below the surface. After 25 years of service to the Navy in operations in Korea, Vietnam and the Mediterranean, ex-Oriskany now benefits marine life, sport fishing and recreation diving off the coast of the Florida panhandle. I wouldn't know why not, tho', KoC, it'd still exist in Fallout's timeline, considering when they started building it.

At the very least it'd serve well as a model for the stranded aircraft carrier-building, if such a place would exist in Fallout 3.

So it seems.

And lost at least 50% of his Woozie Respect Points.

Well the Oriskany never went to Anacostia. She was built in New York, then was stationed in Florida, but spent most of her existence on the west coast and the far east (Japan).

Not in our reality, no. But Fallout's reality isn't ours.

There's no strict reason for them to name it Oriskany, tho' it could be heavily based on it.

Can't tell based on a piece of concept art, obviously. The more likely explanation is that the artist stumbled upon it, in which case I leave our artists to judge based on that.

It'd be a nice location, that's for sure.

So why would there even be an Oriskany? Touché

Because Fallout's timeline doesn't diverge until somewhere estimated to be around the Cold War's Freeze (1948-1953).

"Construction was suspended on 12 August 1947, when the ship was approximately 85% complete. Oriskany was redesigned as the prototype for the SCB-27 modernization program." and then finally put to seas in September 1950.

At least we're becoming experts on an aircraft carrier.

Heh.

I'm surprised you haven't started to bicker about its size compared to the surrounding buildings.

Maybe a Sander Summon is in order right about now.

nice catch!

also: artificial reef full of asbestos, how nice of the muricans. cancer for ze fishes!

Well if it is in fact the Oriskany, it's comforting because that'd mean that Bethesda are aware that Fallout 3's universe should not be our own..

They strip all the toxic materials out before sinking these ships.
