Armoured talking heads

One thing that bothers me in copy-pasting NPC heads over existing talking heads is that the shadows don't align properly. Sulik's PA frm is a prime example, as shadows lie in a different way on his face than on the PA.

For some reason, I find Myron in robes quite disturbing. He doesn't seem that annoying, he almost looks cool. That can't be right :P

The THs were never something that I care about too much but it's nice to have a more personal touch with the NPCs.

Overall good work.

Sure, difference in shadows is visible, but with help from skilled 2d painter such things can be fixed very quick. And to be honest: I expected much more worse results.

Anyway, I wonder how problem with correct proportions will be solved, which I mentioned earlier...

Myron's TH isn't so annoying like his critter. It's one of the most stupid and retarded things added to Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Comedy Game

Here is the old leather armor

And the new ones that halfly done but I think they will be better then the olds cause I modeled body to them so I was able to put everything where it should be

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Some good comments there;

- Brother None's point about Sulik's neck being too long.
- Wolna's point about shoulders being too small

- Mikaels point about the shadows: Good point, i agree, but honestly, the shadows are unlikely to be be perfect given the imperfect nature of 2D editing of art created by 3D modelling. Personally, i think the result is 'good enough'
- Continuums point about some TH's from different perspectives also a good point. Myrons is the most drastically different, and will probably cause some problems. But where there's a will there's a way :)

The more general point about 'cartoony' graphics being good or bad .... well, i have to say i think the current obsession in game development with realism is not really a good thing. Take Oblivion for example. Several people have pointed out the wonderful, realistic, real-time-shadow-casting, high-poly amazing textured trees in the game. And i agree - they are amazing. But it seems to me, that in their single-minded obsessive drive to create amazingly realistic graphics they forgot to make a good game.

And IMO Oblivion is not the only contemporary video game that sacrificed gameplay for 'good' (read: realistic) graphics.

I personally love FO's over-exaggerated, somewhat cartoony (IMO read: style) graphics. It seems to me the FO art director decided to emphasize graphics that are fun, characterful and dramatic rather than obsess over barely noticable shadow details and perfectly realistic armour plates ....

No matter what I tried looks like I can't make this leather armor better

2 things that crossed my mind when reading through this thread:

Myron doesnt have a NPC armor mod...

Marcus has a cool metal armor :D

I'm going for the gravedigger perk here!

I'd like to polish off my NPC mod by adding armoured TH's into the game. But first I want to prototype it. So my question is: how so I make the game use a different head for Sulik when he's in different armor? Is it also possible to change the voice files used?

I am sure there is someone out there who will say it can be done with sfall. However, I still haven't mastered that. I will tell you that it could be scripted. Very easily, as a matter of fact. Just some tweaking in the talk procedure. I am nowhere near my Fallout stuff now. But I would gladly tackle this issue when I am able to at the beginning of next month.

And what do you mean about the voice files? Do you want to modify the existing ones or just change which one is called? I have no idea if they can be modified. Again, very easy to change which ones are called. Can be as simple as renaming a file, changing the file referenced in the script, or modifying the text file. Let ne know what you are considering.

Ah, MIB! Glad to see you're still around. These boards seem quiet these days.

Ok, well, that's good to know that it's easy to do. My idea for the voice files is this: I was recently experimenting with running suliks voice files through a filter to make him sound like the Navarro drill seargent when in PA/APA. It sounds pretty cool actually! So I figured if it's easy to change the TH characters use when in different armours, then it would be a simple matter to simply copy the APA TH over, run Suliks voice files through the filter and hey presto you have Sulik (or Draveans cassidy) in APA with a radio voice.

Now, the other armoured TH's are not so easy, as we discussed all those years ago in this thread, but i'm going to do some test heads to see if I can do the other armours.

voices

Your idea just got easier to implement. I would just copy huge sections of Sulik's script, make sure the copy is called only when wearing powered armors, and then renumber the called dialogs. I could do this. The renumbering would be tedious, but still easy.

You also just added an element to something I wanted to do for the MM. I wanted to make the radios useful. To call certain characters when the player's character is alone. If the voice could be distorted for those with voices already, I think that would be pretty cool.

Out of the country again on an assignment. But, I will start to work on your idea first week of next month.

Nice to see you Josan - making the artwork shouldn't be a big problem...it just might need some rescaling, colour adjustment, etc...

Pixote! The man who can. Glad you're still around these boards. NMA has quite a cool, unique community amongst the wild interwebs.

Yes, that's exactly what i've been going for. You know, I actually already did sulik in PA years ago, and then discovered recently i've 'lost' the FRMs. Oh well. There's only about 10 FRM TH's per character so it's no biggie to do them again.

You've got a good eye for detail so i'll post what i'm doing and get your feedback.

EDIT: could you upload that sulik PA overlay? saves me doing it again and I know yours will be tight.
ALSO: Do you have the FO1 TH's by any chance? Or could you just post the Rhombus, Cabot, Nikki and Jane head frames? I don't have FO1 anymore...

Have you checked out Vic's talking head? I've been wanting that forever.

Too bad I don't have time now. I would be able to draw all this without any problems/MS Paint involvement. :)

The only question (sorry, don't have time to read the whole thread either) is if it is ever technically possible to keep so many frames in the game files.

Nope. Can you link it?

Ok here's Sulik. Feeback is welcome but i'm not going to be changing much beyond details at this point.

Obviously I didn't make the APA, and the metal armor is not my work.

Question: Am i correct in thinking that once you've recruited a companion, they never use anything other than the 'neutral' set of heads? If this is the case there's no point in me doing the 'bad' and 'good' faces....

The only exception I can think of is Myron. He does get angry when you try to convince him there might be a cure for Jet addiction.
