This is probably too long ago for most anyone to remember, but 6 years DMJ Aurini AKA Atomic Cowboy posted a short story to these forums entitled As I Walk These Broken Roads, also hosted as a PDF.

He has since divorced the story of its Fallout ties, and has released the first volume in what should be a series of book of this now fully original post-apocalyptic tale, available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats.
Out of the irradiated wastes comes a soldier. On the far edge of the trade routes, in a small farming community, there lives a mechanic. Two men from a previous era, surviving through steel and cunning in a world of degenerated philosophy; a world where the old tech is treated with savage, animistic worship.

A storm is coming. When civilization is scattered and broken, what is a man supposed to do?

How is a man supposed to live?
The first seven chapters are available online, which should give you a good idea if you're interested in the full thing. And there's a Facebook page, too.

Thanks, Brother None!

It's been getting rave reviews thus far; I'm really happy with how it turned out. Just make sure you download the seven-chapter *.rar file - heh, the old pdf is a VERY early draft.

Well, I read through the first seven chapters, and I was pretty impressed. I did notice a few misplaced words here and there, but nothing worth fretting over. I liked the part about the two headed calf being born! I especially like Wentworth. He sounds like a true ex-military bad ass. You ended the freebie at the perfect time too. I'm eager to find out how it all turns out. Where does the story take place geographically? I found myself wondering that a few times. Nice work Atomic Cowboy! The subtle Fallout references made me smile.

I really should update those files - they're the penultimate draft. I *think* the book's now typo-free... but typos are like rocks in a farmer's field. Fresh ones show up every spring.

It's set around the Great Lakes - Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago - the area I grew up in.

Thanks, brother!

It never ceases to amaze me the amazing people this fandom attracts. I suppose since Fallout is near-perfect so it attracts perfectionists (we once held a personality test in general discussion and our most common type was INTJ which amazingly is not only supposed to be the rarest of types, but is called "mastermind" since most people with those traits excel in life).

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller
