Attack of the Trailers

Many movies have released trailers which reveal most of the action scenes, or mislead you into thinking the movie is good. Clash of the Titans is one I mentioned over in the Order earlier. After loving the original I saw the trailer for the remake, and it looked cool with a decent cast, decent Cg, and Liam Neeson as Zeus. I was hoping to see a lot of the Gods, but they seemed to play a minor role in the film. It made zero sense for Hades to summon the Kraken, when Poseidon did in the original. They simply added Hades as the enemy to be cool. Basically they ruined the movie, but the trailer was alright.

Many movies have tricked me into thinking they would be good, sometimes because of the trailer. Mainly this happened when I was younger, and more susceptible to sneaky tactics. The Godzilla remake was hyped like crazy, but we know how that turned out. Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project used clever trailers and viral marketing to build excitement for the movie. Both are shitty movies, but they tricked people into thinking they were good.

300 had a awesome trailer, but many of the best scenes were in the trailer. Iron Man was the same way. I Am Legend was atrocious, but the trailer made the movie look passable. Talk about the movies that made you believe they were good, or the movies that show every action scene in the trailer. Post trailers if you like, or ignore this thread completely. Your move. I'm off to my cave now. Cheers. :)

I disagree, I loved Cloverfeild and Blair Witch scared the pants off me.
Granted, I young when I saw Blair witch but still.

The worst movie I ever saw that had a really good trailer is by far the trailer for Hereafter, Which looked really interesting but was rather mediocre in practice.

I always try to not watch trailers, but the opposite can happen, a movie you were expecting has a horrible trailer and makes you think it will be bad, an example is The Avengers Trailer...... that thing is baaaaaad.

A straight example would be the Paranormal activity trailers....... fuck those movies....

I turned Hereafter off halfway through. It was painful.

Trailers also have a bad habit of spoiling the movie. I see this trend all the time in comedy and horror movies especially. I think a good example of how to do a trailer is the one for the upcoming semi-alien prequel Prometheus. The trailer creates an air of mystery that really makes me want to check the film out.

I agree. Trailers should make you wonder a little. Hollywood is what it is though.

Occasionally I see a trailer that gives a completely and intentionally false impression of what the actual movie is like. I really dislike that.

Boogie Nights is a good example. The trailer sold it as being a fun romp through the disco 1970s...but failed to mention it was a tragic tale of a bunch of dimwitted players in the porn industry. I still thought it was pretty good, but that begs the question, why did the trailer have to be misleading?

Exactly. I hate misleading trailers. I hate when a movie acts like it is using "Real" footage like The Fourth Kind. Load of fucking shit.

I've noticed in a lot of old movies the trailers go out of the way to mention every event in the movie including major plot points that spoil the story.

In this, Hitchcock was a master of being able to tell you -everything- about the movie, yet reveal nothing. Take this trailer for instance, for the original Psycho. It's a six minute long trailer, where he literally walks the audience through the movie.

I have noticed that too. Old Sci-Fi and Horror flicks are bad about that.
