Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Some of you might not be aware that "Primitive Tribe" was simply a placeholder name that the original Fallout developers had for that location. Since it was removed from the game before it was fleshed out, it never got a proper moniker.

For years now, we've been calling this place Primitive Tribe. Most of us have probably gotten very used to that but it's a bit silly when you think about it.

Now that the RP is gearing up for what is, in all likelihood, the last major release, I thought I'd take this opportunity to see what the community felt about changing the name of this location.

Should we leave it as is, or should we give it a proper name? And if the general consensus is that it should be re-named then I'd like for you guys to help us decide on something fitting.

I've done a little bit of research with Google maps to see what real-life locations are in that area. Here's what we've got to possibly draw inspiration from:

o Petrolia (that's the name of the community located there)
o Moore Hill
o Cooskie Mountian
o Mattole River
o Shenanigan Ridge
o Prosper Ridge

Thoughts?

Yup, Prosper Ridge sounds great to me.
I vote for adding one more NPC in the camp: Art-I-choke, chief cook of the tribe. :V

Yes you are right,i have been thinking about this while playing RP,but i never think for the proper name.
However,maybe :
o Mattole River - for the wather in the primitive tribe area.
o Shenanigan Ridge - I don't know for what,but i like it.
OR
Something different of the examples.

"Prosper" Ridge? :D

The idea of changing the name is interesting... calling the place "primitive tribe" sounds far from nice.

I like "Cooskie Mountian".

Well now, risk being a "target", but I was wondering...

Wouldn't another name be better, something not based on geography as we know it AND to do with the characteristics of the tribe?

quote from wiki (read if interested):

wiki said:
They are extreme believers in the here-after and revere many spirits, certain that they are the tribe's spirits. Their principals are connected to the classical elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. The main, wisest and strongest of them is Grampy Bone, that appears to be the only unique spirit and not come from other spirits group. It is only in contact with Sulik, an honor for him, which can be found through his nose's bone. The known Primitive Tribe's spirits are:

Bonespirits
Dark-spirits
Evil spirits
Grampy Bone
Spirits of anger
Spirits of chaos
Spirits of fire
Spirits of poison
Spirits of wrath
Spirits of the earth
Spirits of the sky
Spirits of the water
Spirits of the wind
Spirits walking
Strong spirits
Stupid spirits

For them, spirits are omnipresent, and can, and often do, travel with people and can guide them, such as a stupid person carrys "stupid spirits", while an evil person has "evil spirits". The members of the Primitive Tribe also have a large bone driven their nose, allowing them to be connected to spirits and able to speak with them, given advice and talk about the future, but "spirits see and say different", so their words are sometimes hard to understand.

So maybe name along the lines of:

Tribe of the Spirit/Spirit Tribe
Grampy Tribe (no, NOT grumpy)
Tribe of the Bone/Bone Tribe
Tribe of the Ancestors/Ancestor Tribe
Two Moon Tribe (since its two moons walk from Klamath)

etc

As for already offered names, all of them sound ok EXCEPT Petrolia

Why should the tribe have any name for themselves besides "us", in contrast to "them" to outsiders? "Two Moon Tribe" is an exonym, and so would be most of the names after present-day places (you'd usually name the latter after the former, not the other way around).

Of the proposals, Prosper Ridge-dwelling "Ridge Tribe" or "Ridge Clan" sounds the best, although I maintain they would simply name themselves "People". Tribes will frequently do that, see "Inuit" or "Koori", which simply mean "us" in their respective languages.

I'm not sure about where the wiki's info comes from, but I'm not sure that grampy bone is that special for the tribe. What I mean is, I believe all the tribemen believe they have their own family members as spirits.
About calling it Two Moon Tribe, I think that's more appropiate as a name they give to Klamath, since they wouldn't probably call themselves based on another group of people, but will call that way towns near their tribe.
It's harder to think of a name since we don't know their origins, so I think inventing a name for the tribe would require inventing an origin for them.

Petrolia sounds almost like petrol, which suit postapocaliptic world.

Some uneducated tribal heard somewhere word "petrol", which sounded cool for him, so he decided to call his tribe like that. That actualy would make sense...

Other than that, I like these:
o Cooskie Mountian
o Mattole River

This should be addressed, but the answer is not clear.
I think the best we could do would be one of the geographic names.

I think we do have some leeway as long as it is roughly the same area.

I'd say everything south of Eureka, west of Mad River(along hwy. 36), and north of Rockport(on hwy. 1) would be fair game for name ideas.

Check it out on Google Maps here:

I like Petrolia

...but... I vote that Killap chooses the name and that we all be happy with it

I have no opinion in this matter, assuming you all don't choose something crazy.

Why not email Chris Taylor or Chris Avellone - it would be nice to have one of the original developers adding their little bit to the RP. :D

That would be a great idea.

Are you volunteering, Pixote? :D

I like Pixote's idea, maybe Brother None can talk to them (if not, he can always talk to Brian Fargo "hey man, can you talk to them for us please?).

.. perhaps if even Matthew J. Norton could be contacted somehow, I think he was an author of Sulik NPC.

I've always been kind of curious about this, myself. I think they deserve a name and the lack of one hurts the verisimilitude of the game. I'm eager to see if we get an answer.

If we're left on our own, though, I think we should probably define what we're actually naming here: The tribe or the location? After all, I doubt the tribe founded by the Vault Dweller was named "The Arroyo Tribe."

Either way, I like "Matolle." It sounds fairly tribal if you pronounce it to (in my head, I hear muh-TOLL-ay or muh-TOLL-uh), and it works as both the name of a tribe and the name of a location. It could be spelled phonetically to signify a bit of linguistic drift, too.

Otherwise, I second the idea of tying their name in with an aspect of their reverence for the spirits or the otherworldly-- it would capitalize both on an obvious practice of the tribe and something from their beliefs, similar to the naming conventions of the White Legs and the Sorrows, respectively. Something like Spiritwalk(ers) or Bonespeak(ers) could work, though if I was in a more creative mood I'd stongly favor something a little less direct.

I changed my mind. This idea is much better.
