Avatar

I meant in 3D movies. That a few other movies had better visual effects compared to Avatar is obvious.

Personally, I felt that LotR was too "generic fantasy". Everything in the movie I've seen before. With no twist to come to its help, it was just a faithful adaptation.

Avatar on the other hand... sure, concepts were used before (find me a concept that wasn't used before - Tolkien was borrowing heavily from European mythologies), but the way it was executed was flawless and the world really felt unique.

Unlike the generic fantasy of LotR.

I agree on this, in terms of 3D Avatar never had any real competition.

Iam not saying that LotR was a great movie, iam saying that visually its far better then Avatar. To me world of LotR looks real and alive while the world of Avatar looks like someone went crazy with water colors.

Pandora =/= Earth

Alien environments are supposed to look alien.

That is the problem, it doesnt look much alien, it looks like recolored Earth jungle. For example look at the film Battle for Terra, it has identical story as Avatar but manages on small budget to create much more unique aliens and world itself.

Took a look. Interesting, but doesn't seem any more alien than Avatar.

Watch it, the Aliens feel more alien than in Avatar where aliens feel like colored indians. Its not a great film, but to me personally felt more original.
 
I liked Avatar a lot. I am a fan of sci-fi movies though, so i may not be impartial here.

It was a good movie, a decent plot and a lot of work was put into it. That's what makes it great. They were paying attention to details. Or so it seemed. It is really difficult to make a science fiction movie that everyone can enjoy.

It felt, at some times, that the jungle looked like some settings taken out from a video game.. like WoW... elves were missing...
