I have to disagree with that. District 9 and Avatar are definitely in the "serious sci-fi" category, since they touch on some very mature subjects and generally have a serious tone without dipping into pathos (something very hard to achieve in sci-fi).
Does that make Dances With Wolves or even Titanic not a popcorn flick?

Also, I just found out that the Unobtainium plot device in the film is actually called 'unobtanium'.
You cannot possibly take a film that does that seriously.

At best, the name unobtanium seems just lazy.

That actually seems like a pretty shallow sci-fi device compared to something well developed like melange in Dune.

Dune has an awesome plot when it comes around that. But it was always difficult to make a good movie about it.

I like sci-fi, forgive my obvious bias.

I can. We call our stuff a lot of weird names. Besides, it's not stated in the film itself whether or not it's the actual official name for the McGuffin.

This movie was pretty damn predictable, if I watched it in 2D I would have walked out of the theater.

Bullshit. The movie was not that bad I have seen a lot worse. I think people analyze shit way to much now days.

Well that's still one more dimension than the characters have.

One dimensional characters are in Blind Side, for instance. Avatar definitely has above average characters.

Avatar makes audiences depressed.
Wow... just wow.

And  at the image they chose at the top.

Ahmadinejad was apparently among them, could be good could be bad.

looks like most people agree here, even if they liked the movie. Cool visuals, flat characters. Dunno whats bad about that though or why one would not admit. I bet the movie is still worth to be seen. Just probably more or less a action flick.

In my opinion the movie is not even worth seeing, story and characters are shallow and, in my opinion, the special effects have been made better before.

But it will certainly win Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects, for directing and best film not likely.

Which movie would be that? I havnt seen avatar and I am not really a fan of 3D movies and the only CGI animated (or what ever ...) movie I have seen that would come close was Final Fantasy flick so forgive me my ignorance. But I am just curious since at least almost everywhere Avatar gets good critics for the use of 3D. So yeah ... I am curious which movie did it "better".

I am sure there are certain movies with better special effects in general Camerons Abyss or Terminator 1/2 still have a few breath taking effects, but those are real movies with most of the time real effects. In the 3D department I would not be surprised if Cameron has set a few new standarts. But as said I am not that fond about it. Just more or less what I have read and what people wrote here.

To me personally the Lord of the Rings trilogy are far more visually better films. This is just my opinion, and while you can argue how Avatar is a revolution since everything is made in CGI and it looks flawlessly to me its the art direction that stands out. While everything in the movie is really stunning, I just could not shake the "its been done before feeling". The aliens are just furrified and colored indians, the jungle creatures all look like they came from Jurassic Park and marines and their equipment from Aliens. There are countless scenes in LotR series that just made me breathless, only very few did the same for me from Avatar.
