Backroom I.T. reviews Fallout 3

One of my friends is crying GOTY for FO3 and says, I quote without liberties, "It's gonna be Oblivion with guns man, it's gonna be ******* awesome" which is usually met with a blank stare from me. He's never bothered to play 1 and 2, and says he won't touch them because of the graphics. Even though I hate to say it, he's pretty much the cookie cutter gamer of nowadays.

I also played 2 before 1, and I prefer 1. Although things seemed a bit more cleaned up in 2 in the interface and bugs and things like that.

Anyone notice how he talks about traits? I'm pretty sure traits aren't in Fallout 3. I call bullshit. I'd say this is a poorly-researched, taped-together collage of previous Fallout 3 media.

90% of the scores of Spore are by people who followed Digg links about DRM that never actually played the game.

I mean, if we are going by metacritics user ratings then Fallout 3 at 8.8 must be good, right?
Most people there haven't played Fallout 3, so not a very good example. ;)

That said, it's pretty obvious that 'the gaming media' is basically a big suck-up fest for the developers. Games get consistently ridiculously high scores, with no problems mentioned.

See Oblivion. It got rave reviews on release, no problems were mentioned, or if they were they were shrugged off as minor. Yet when Fallout 3 was announced and the first previews started coming in, those previews were filled with 'Well, we all know that Oblivion did XXX horribly wrong, but Fallout 3's fixed that!!!'

He screws up a few details about the new SPECIAL system (skills are capped at 100 now, no more traits) and offers very little in the way of "new" info.

Thats just the Wikipedia article on the SPECIAL system.

I like how he copy/pasted it without checking if it was right or not.

The best part is that it's a blog by a guy who is playing a pirated version of the game. I dunno why people even consider this a review.

When I read the bit about traits, I was glad that Bethesda decided to put that into the game afterall. Then I realized it was bullshit. Bah.
Not much of a review. More of a really shitty preview with random fanboy score.

Is he still your friend? :D

Because he's playing the pirated version maybe? The pirated version is probably a gold copy taken from the production line so he's probably playing the final product.

It's a BLOG, by some PIRATE.

His 'review' of the game is no more valid than me saying "The game is awesome, it's really Fallout.. you may not see it in the canned videos but when you play it you will really see it! Oh and this SPECIAL and how it works blah blah wiki information"

Can that be on the front page too?

So because it's on a blog and/or written by a pirate it can't possibly be valid? Besides the fact that is a genetic fallacy, bloggers are not inherently liars nor wrong, particularly when it comes to things like reviews and pirates also aren't inherently liars (just because they steal digital content doesn't mean that they lie about it). This article has a lot wrong with it but it's source certainly isn't one of the problems.

I'm not saying his opinion isn't valid. I'm saying that its status as an official review is invalid.

It just brings into question what is actually 'newsworthy' I guess. Of course BN and the Pope et al make that call.

Considering the number of reviews out there, it's a fair call. No one is saying that it's an official review because it isn't but it is still a review. Also I'd say that most any review of a decent length is more news worthy that the PR crap Bethesda lets out since most of that is the same crap over and over.

I might agree with you given a good example. This one is not it.

And this is coming from someone who is much more positive about the game than the average NMAer.

Have to agree with this. I kinda get excited over nothing while playing a game for the first time. In fact I now determine how much I love a video game depending on how long I keep on playing it, rather than what my first thoughts about the game was. Kinda silly how my mind works, but yeah.

Same here. I'm not too proud to admit that I thought Oblivion was going to be radtastic. Having loved nearly everything in Morrowind and seeing that my niggles with it (the journal, character movement, ranged combat, and magic use all being clunky and in the last two, mostly ineffective), were going to be resolved, I bought into the hype. I got the game, played through it and saw nothing but rainbows, unicorn farts, and kitten giggles for the first week or so.

In retrospect, I'm not quite as happy with the game.

A new Perk is chosen every three or four levels. In addition to these Perks, the player may also select up to two initial Traits — special Perks that involve tradeoffs, such as giving up some Action Points to do more damage in melee combat. Traits can only be selected at the time of initial character creation

Did he just review Fallout 1?

This smells of that other guy who said he had Fallout 3 before release, but really was just an attention whore who rehashed info from previews and such. This guy doesn't even have the pirate version of the game, I bet.

I agree that it's a crappy "review", I'm just saying that it being a blog review and/or being written by a pirate has nothing to do with anything. It falls on it's face on it's own merits but to be fair, so have a lot of official articles (like the one talking about how much Fallout ripped off Bioshock  ).
