Baldur's Gate Series

BTW, what do you guys think about the console BG games? Are they worth a look?

Hm you mean BG Dark Alliance for PS2 or something? its same as Diablo not even close to RPG...might be fun i never played it but its only hack & slach...

Remember every game on console is dumbed down fev times so its not worth it if you have fun on PC...i would go even that far that BG2 graphics even 2d are far more better than BGDA on PS2 but im 2d fan so well others might like 3d more...

Remember that god awful train wreck of a game that Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel was? It's in the same vein as that. Better graphics though. Also lacks the juvenile cursing and jokes. Other than that it's pretty much just in the same class.

Oh I see. I've never played FoBOS but I get the point.

Anyways, does anyone have any favorite NPC's? I have Jaheira, Aerie, Minsc, Yoshimo, and Anomen. Thinking about making some changes.

Viconia :) too bad ending with her is bad no matter what way you choose i think she has best dialogue and romance also highest magic defence with no items if you give her some items its possible to get 100% magic immunity and then well its a mage killer...

Any way my last game was

Cast:

Gregor_y the Wild Mage with funny effects cow falling on enemies or speels 2x effect or i killed my self or someone hey wild magic is dangerous...

Minsc the mighty berserker with space hamster at least he thinks so made me lol many times...

Jaheira druid great healing and fights in front line plus good dialogues too still kinda sad char but gets better later...

Aerie mage and cleric speels are great but needs ranged weapon sucks in close combat and shes so cute plus theres a baby option...

Viconia like i said cleric and mage killer and fights in first line i think best char in game...

Imoen not best thief but well story is better that way and with good bow and katanas well...

Any way its still best RPG so far fights, dialogue, locations, choices its fallout but with no wasteland... :)

Dark Alliance games are... Well they are funny 3rd person run&shoot games :P. They are not really worth hunting for unless you come across them in a bargain bin or such. (They are both less than 8h mindless shooters... I mean side scrolling medieval games set in 3-D envirolments)

Minsc and Boo are the best charas in the game. I suggest googling for the site that lists best Minsc/Boo quotes =))

Edwin is my second fav. chara, and one of the best companions, especially if your main chara isn't a mage. His turning into a woman moment is the best

Edwin you find him in one of thiefs guild? i dont like him even if he is best mage thx to his amulet...

Play as Wild Mage and if your lucky your turn minsc into woman... :)

Any way BG rocks no game has such amount and quality of dialogues...

Ehm, Planescape: Torment easily has more more and better dialogues. Both Fallout games and Arcanum have more dialogue options that actually matter, unsure about total amount of dialogue.

And Edwin is the only character whose sex can be changed with actual in-game reactions.

Dident play Planescape: Tourment i just looked at screenshots and i said im not buying it...

About Dialogue options well i think BGII has more dialogue than F1 or F2...

Dont get me wrong i love both series i have everything orginal but im preaty sure amount of dialogues is bigger in BG series plus when the npc starts talk to each other well it gets preaty funny when you have 3 chicks in team and they start to fight each other and one asks you whos right you read whole dialogue again to not piss anyone off :)

Even combat system is better in BG yes im going to be flamed for this but sometimes its just anoying waiting for you turn while in BG in shorter time you give commands to whole team and in F1&F2 you control only 1 npc and we know how this ends "omg my back i told you not to use burst..."

Graphics? hands down BG series still have one of best visual thing i saw in my life none of this 3d crap bloom and other shity effects still F2 looks better than most modern games in 800x600...sounds & music are great in both games...

And yes i like 2D more than 3D i think its joke to make RPG,RTS or anything that requires brain power in 3D for shiny graphics...

Any way theres actually no point in comparing those games becouse they are difreant things and both are awesome and i love them...

Well, rather than flaming you for this (I could but shouldn't, cause technically both combat systems are pretty buggy and have their share of problems), I will flame you for the following:

Dident play Planescape: Tourment i just looked at screenshots and i said im not buying it...

WTF kind of buying strategy is that? Although, it's you not me missing out on a great game so what should I care.

Well, and FO3 may have as much dialogue as a BG or old FO game. But is it well-written? There are a few good talks in BG, and the party banter is fun and good (not without halp of mods though, otherwise you rarely even get party banter), but ther rest is just boring and uninspired (Bioware style); plus, BG dialogue barely ever changes depending on the character race, class, etc. FO had an interesting dialogue for almost every other NPC you can talk to, and could change a lot because of skills and stats. Arcanum was average overall, but I was surprised how thoroughly reactions (and a lot of dialogue) change in regards to class and play style.

Well, I guess I'm wasting my time, since you're implying that you didn't bother to even read most of dialogue in FO. Surely, you can guess-click, skim or use a walkthrough, but of course you'll miss all the fun stuff.

I guess we're talking mods again. The original BG was 640x480 and had some of the crappiest 3d gfx for the "classic" rpg. Even Diablo looked better. BG2 was better though. I'd still argue that the best Black Isle game gfx would have to go to IWD1 or Lionheart. Though, admittedly, if the game is good enough, gfx don't matter. Final Fantasy III NES (J) is one of my favourite old RPGs, for example.

Does anyone here know if a Flail/Morningstar weapon requires a proficiency in either or both?

It should say in the item description. A weapon only has one type.

I really got into this game now. I think the interactions with companions and possible companions is just amazing. I love how every one of them has an agenda of their own and can even leave the party for personal reasons. The conflicts they have with each other to the point that they argue and get in fights are also fantastic. When you compare it to something like KOTOR or Mass Effect (later BioWare games that were so hyped for their complex NPC interactions) it's just so much more advanced that it's ridiculous.

There have also been some great quests and the combat system is actually pretty damn good, in that you actually really have to rely on your companions and all the different magics.

I give this game an A and I think I'm definitely going to play the first one after I finish BGII.

BTW, can anyone tell me when is a good time to do Watcher's Keep? I'm on the second chapter with my 11th level Fighter, Jaheira, Aerie, Yoshimo, Anomen, and Minsc. I was able to get to level 3 but Tahazzar, with his little gang, owns me every time.

Also, if I leave Watcher's Keep for now and go about my business, is it ok to drop that key (the one you need to enter and exit the keep) on the ground in front of the entrance? Will it not disappear if I don't come back for awhile?

You can go to Warcher's Keep at any level. I'll recommend the first 1-2 levels for your 11-12 level characters; leave and come back later. The game will not punish you for doing so :)

As for the key ? (what key? = the ward stone?) I think? it is only necessary to have with you when you enter the Keep for the first time? You will exit through the side doors, you can enter through them again.

Watcher's Keep is amazing with really great dialogues, story, and characters and choices, too.

I was trying to leave it in some container inside the keep but it didn't let me exit without it. Not through the main entrance, nor through the side exit. I do have to leave it outside or take it with me, it appears.

Watcher's Keep has some awesome items too. That ammo belt and the potion bag saved so much space and so many trips to vendors.

On my last game, right before the fight with [spoiler:e623fd68ef]Demogorogn[/spoiler:e623fd68ef] at the end I kept getting the scripted encounter where [spoiler:e623fd68ef]Keldorn kills Vicionia for being Drow.[/spoiler:e623fd68ef]

I was like, damn. What a lovely time for this to happen.

And yeah Max, the character interactions are amazing. Every party member has a unique reaction to everything in the game, and the reactions of party members work off each other. There are so many different possible combination's, it is just crazy.

Just finished BG2 finally. I'd probably enjoy the game a lot more if I was as familiar with all the mechanics and spells at the start as I am now. Definitely a good game but would greatly benefit from more feedback and clearer descriptions of things.

Anyway, I guess ToB has just started and I don't know if I want to get into it. Is it worth it? I've already finished the Watcher's Keep during SoA.

Well ToB is summing up the child of Bhaal thingie so if you are up to knowing the end of story, then it's good. On the other hand IMO it is worse than SoA in term of RPGness

ToB is good if you want some closure, or if you really enjoy the combat system.

Well it's sort of short anyway, so might as well go for it. Definitely good for closure but also pretty linear.
