BioShock reviews

Am I missing something? The choices seem to be straight good and evil: kill the harmless creatures and get a resource boost, or let them live and gain their assistance or whatever instead. Seen that done countless of times before. What's the moral dilema there?

I plan to check it out, and maybe these reviews are accurate, but seeing all this loving is actually already putting me off the thing, heh. From the vids I saw, the multiple choices seemed to be all based around different ways to approach combat.

Guess we'll se.

Also, this is coming from someone who is starved from a truly good FPS (I never got to experience System Shock 1 or 2, or Half-life 2 :( )
What the hell man. SS1 is a bit of a pain in the ass to get rolling (Even on Dosbox last I tried) but SS2 is on Underdogs for downloading (Not sure on NMA's stance on abandonware) and Half-Life 2 can be had pretty cheaply. Hell, if you wait a few months you can pick up the "Orange box" that has HL2, episode 1 and episode 2 for $50.
Just figured I'd say, I'm going to pick that up.

That basically IS it. If you've played System Shock 2, you'll know that the story is entirely linear with one ending, but... Eh... The "Gameplay" itself is fairly open. Kinda hard to describe.

And since they've said over and over again that they think of Bioshock as a shooter and spiritual successor to System Shock, only having the choice of kill or save little sisters and having two (I think they said two endings, depending on what you did with little sisters) endings doesn't surprise me. Watching a movie of someone playing through the demo though has me excited, looks very Shock-like, and the addition of the plasmids should make that style of game even more fun.

Very good. It's not the second coming like most of the reviews say, but it is a pretty fantastic FPS game.

Yeah that's what I was expecting out of Bioshock. The "role-playing" elements or lack thereof don't really bother me, though I suppose if I took Irrational to town if they were hyping it as SS3, it might. To me, "Spiritual Successor" != direct sequel, so I expect it's got some of the good things from SS2 but not all of them...no biggie.

Good to hear that the demo will be out tomorrow so I can see what all the Xbox 360 owners have been talking about.

i dont expect it to be on par with system shock but i do hope it will be the best first person game of the last few years
(yes i'm very easily hyped or dehyped)
Bah, I doubt it. From what I've seen (gameplay footage) the combat is rather clunky. As a FPS, I don't think the game will shine than much. As a game in itself, well, that's another story, but not as a FPS. Still a lot of work to reach Far Cry

(though they do actually know what they're talking about on this one)
Lol, I doubt it. Most reviewers know a good FPS when they see it, and all of them know what immershun is... Now, I can't remember reading a review where the reviewer openly talks about game mechanics and deep stuff like that, showing understanding of the issue. Maybe some years ago there was more reviewers like that, but not now... With that said, I'm not saying they aren't right by going 10/10, I'm just saying that doesn't show they understand what they are talking about. Remember: they are the same morons that put Oblivion on top of best rpg's ever lists and stuff. Talk about game mechanics, and make them explain why oblivion is such a good rpg... Just the same, ask them why is Bioshock a good game. Most of them, and this IS the truth, NO way around it, most of those reviewers know as much about games as a common average player, and they talk/write about them as a common average player would, only with better writing skills (in some cases).

I haven't read any BS's review, so keep that in mind when you read my opinion... But I know too well the kind of "journalists" that review theses games.

Note, I later said "fuck reviewers". I'm just saying that them giving the game a 10 is a good thing, and "they know what they're talking about" in this case, not about the game mechanics, or the visual detail, but that the overall score is correct in this case (10/10).

And there's no demo version - Irrational Games told about this in April.
you should read newsbits before saying stuff like that...

in April he said they were focussing on the game itself & that it wasnt sure if there would be time to make a demo.

however, they made a demo for Xbrick now and are currently working on the PC one. he's also said he's sorry for the pc version being later than the Xbrick...

Yeah, I got it. What I meant was that even though what they say may be correct, it doesn't mean they are right.

I played the demo and it's pretty good, but I'd say it's like a B or around 80% grade.

There are no real choices in combat. Hit 'em with lightning then whack 'em. The hacking game is D-U-M-B. I bet the water flows faster, making it harder in the real game but both times I hacked it was incredibly easy and I had to sit and wait for the water to flow.

It's a pretty good game, but it's not great and the areas certainly don't have as much interactivity as they hyped. Yeah, a lot of objects will move when you bump them, but it's all a bunch of trash that doesn't do anything. They kept saying that they wanted the world to react more but they already gave away all the examples of that - water/electricity and oil/fire.

Just as I suspected. That's why I hate things like giving ratings like 11/10 or 10/10 to express enthusiasm.

My former boss used to give us pep talks. He would say: I want you to give this project 110%.

I, being a smart ass, replied: I can only give you 75% today, but I'd be happy to give you the other 35% next Monday?

Though that's just the demo. You can't slap mines on to security bots to make them suicide bombers or telekinesis throw things or cyclone trap and so on and so forth yet. I figure once you get more toys to play with the environment it'll ramp up the fun.

Plus I doubt electrobolt and wrench will work great through the entire game, though the reviews have been saying that if you upgrade all the melee tonics you can get really nasty with the wrench, so maybe.

To be honest the demo felt really great. It just had IT. The athmosphere was great and Andrew Ryan felt really cool (I had goosebumps at the end when he talked). The city felt like it really had been a real city once and the game was gorgeous. Combat was nice (it was nice at the end to hack the camera, security bot and the turret at the bathroom so I didn't have to kill anyone myself). Well you didn't find out much about the story in the demo, but it seems cool(and all the reviews are saying the story is great).

There were few bad things though, but quite minor. The subtitles are horrible (it doesn't follow the actual voices very well) and the hacking mini game felt like it can become very boring very fast(least I can always use the money instead).

Yeah it's quite linear game and it isn't a rpg, but it still feels amazing.

Update: There is no longer a confirmed date for the BioShock PC demo.

I'll newspost when it's actually out.

it leaked... the geniuses at GameSpy let people "preload" the encrypted version and some intrepid young lads ferreted out the unencrypted download link, now it has spread:

http://games.softpedia.com/get/Games-Demo/...k-PC-Demo.shtml

http://chonnom0.filezaru.com/BioShockPCDemo.zip right click, save as.

Please note: it seems like AA is not working. This could be why they were waiting for the new drivers from ATI/nVidia to release the thing into the wild.
