Can you really call yourself a Fallout fan if you love Fallout 4, honestly?

The game changes so much it's practically unrecognizable as Fallout. The gameplay is dumbed down to practically being a Call of Duty shooter, the lore is pretty much completely raped and killed and replaced with, whatever it is Bethesda thinks they are making (The Institute is the stupidest thing ever), and there is absolutely zero roleplaying. None what so ever. Who's idea was it to give the character a voice? And the stupid references to contemporary culture that they just throw in because, I dunno, laughs I guess. Yeah, the nuking the fridge was hilarious in 2008. Actually, no it never was.

Whatever. Fallout 4 isn't Fallout. Therefore, you aren't truly a Fallout fan if you love this game, as far as I'm concerned.

actually stupid pop culture references are core to fallout 1/2.
some fans even say fallout2 took it too far with easily a dozen silly references to things like star trek or whatever.

I agree with all your other points though.

Actually Call of Duty has more depth to its shooting mechanics than Fallout 4 what with all the emphasis on realism and being able to do things like prone in it.

I'm guessing your new to this discussion, lol. You remind me of myself 3 years ago.

And yes, the feel and tone of Fallout 4 is so radically separated from Fallout 1 and 2 it's barely even the same franchise any more. I've tried arguing this case countless times, but honestly anyone who doesn't see how radically different games they are probably can't be helped.

I'd judge whether or not someone is a Fallout fan based on their reactions to more loyal adaptations.

I'd say it's entirely acceptable for a Fallout fan to like Fallout 4.

However, someone who has only played 3 or 4 I would not call a Fallout fan. To be a Fallout fan IMO, you have to actually enjoy the games that accurately represent what Fallout is.

I *like* Fallout 4.

Or at least I like the final version of Fallout 4.

The initial release was a jaded and often slow experience. I didn't really know if I liked it or not.
However, Automatron, for me at least, save the game that is Fallout 4, but not Fallout 4 itself.

I get that it's a rip of a mod, and the story took itself way too seriously, but I like the mechanic of being able to just build yourself a companion.

That and Far Harbor are the only DLCs I can really recommend to be fair.

So I like F4, I hate it as a Fallout and I admit the game is very clunky.

But I can't bring myself to outright hate it anymore.

I have to accept Fallout is dead, a shell of itself and just accept the game for the game for what it is.

It depends for what you love it.

If you love FO4's RPG elements, main quest or radiant quests, then you didn't play previous games and you aren't FO fan.

But if you just like for what it is (game, that with substantial amount of mods turns into neat post-apo sandbox), I've got no problem with it.

I obviously see how radically different Fallout 4 is from the other games, especially the first two. But I love Fallout 4, not the story line, but the updated VATS, graphics, NPC voice acting, NPC and creature designs, location, DLC, the Institute (A good choice for a antagonistic faction), etc. In my head canon, I see there being two different versions of Jet, one version pre-war, the other version post-war, and the Advanced Power Armor design being loosely based on X-01 Power Armor. I see X-01 Power Armor being in the testing stage. I do believe that T-60 was created by the BOS in the Citadel before they left the Capital Wasteland though.

I can't see why someone couldn't call himself a fan if he loved F4, except for tribalism. Some people could appreciate what Fallout was and what Fallout has become all the same, I guess.
It's not my case, and it's not the case of anyone I know, but I'd actually envy someone who could enjoy Fallout 4 after having played and enjoyed the other titles.

No need to be envious of those people, since it's obvious that RPGs aren't exactly their cup of tea.

I think we have to be fair no matter how much it hurts, if someone played F3,4 and it was their first, they can easily and rightfully so, call them selves a fallout fan. Not everyone is blessed to have experienced classic Fallout before Bethesda made it mainstream.
Many people didn't know Fallout, or they look at it now and they see only old game, no matter how good people might say it is, and we, old fans, cannot possibly expect them to just know what Fallout was. If they do play and get into F1,2 then great, fantastic I would say, but if they don't get it, then it's understandable, the games are very old.
F3,4 have Fallout name on them, so obviously if someone is a fan, they call themselves a Fallout fan, simple. My point is, it's not their fault this might be considered debatable if they are a "true" fan or not, it's Bethesda fault, and I can say the same about old devs that lost this amazing franchise, they made some stupid decisions too.
This is a nice example if you try to explain how divided this community is, obviously there are mainly these groups and they are completely separated, F1,2,NV then goes F3 and after that F4.
I would say by far the best Fallout community is the old one, just because there is no big company fanboy bias among us, and even with our grumpy attitude we are very unified, hardcore and passionate.
The others aren't as faithful, and they are very divided, the only thing that might unify them all is that they are Bethesda fans, but that cuts them off from the old community because they don't like how we all criticize Bethesda.
The question shouldn't be, if you're a true fan or not, instead the question should be if you're a fan of classic/NV Fallout or Bethesda Fallout. That would be the most fair in my opinion.

i consider my self a true fan of fallout . i have played every fallout game(besides brotherhood of steel) and i would say i prefer Bethesda's version a little bit more, I do agree that fallout 4 had its problems but i also feel that it had some good philosophical points more than any other fallout games i have played. i find it unfair to say people who liked fallout 4 are not true fans. this whole fan base fighting thing is kind of like how catholics and lutherans treated each other even though they liked the same thing with a little differences.

Please elaborate how Fallout 1/2/NV are the exact same things as Fallout 3/4 with 'little differences'.
I also want know what kind of philosophical points Fallout 4 points even makes. Pretty much the entirety of Fallout 4 is just running around shooting, making settlements and collecting loot.

Whatever message they try to convey in their Fallout games gets buried beneath all the nonsense of looting and shooting.

I disagree with you on differences part, a LOT.

what i mean is that we appreciate the same game but fight over the changes like the Lutherans and Catholics did they believed in the same god but are willing to kill each other over perceived heretical beliefs much like how the fallout community is now, the orthodox want things to stay the same I.E be more like the original games while the reformists want everything to change and be more mainstream. i would consider myself to be a centrist when it comes this i like the first player elements but i hated how they changed the ending sequence and got rid of ron Perlman as narrator. but also love how they added settlement building. Also the Philosophical point in fallout 4 is how we are ready to kill for the small things and not look at the bigger picture. this is evident with the minutemen who are the only ones who are trying to rebuild while everyone else is fighting over robots and dumb stuff like that.

A couple of easter eggs don't make a game good tho

One thing I don't get is why modern fans of games perceive any critical or non-gushy part of a game's community as cancerous negativity that need to be curbed or addressed.

It's an annoying trend seeing as it tends to bring apologists or fanboys to forums to 'enlighten' the supposedly negative aspect as to why something is good and that it is wrong to be critical.

Kinda like the user above actually.

I mean, I'm 20, I was being born when the original Fallout came out. My friend bought New Vegas when it first came out, I fucked around on there but never really played the game seriously. That being said, I bought FO4 when it came out, and it was the first Fallout I've ever really played. I played the game A LOT, then I went back and played New Vegas and loved it way more than FO4, I wondered why the hell four wasn't a serious RPG like New Vegas, after NV I think I started playing 3 and somewhere in between playing 3 I went on my computer and bought the first Fallout and the second one and LOVED them, even though the first one is a bit dated and the speech system was kinda hard to me. I understand people who played 1&2 first didn't like 3, but I think 3 is a master piece if we are comparing it to 4.

Point is 4 was my first actual play through of Fallout and it got me into the older ones, I'll still play 4 but it's pretty bad for a lot of reasons compared to every one before it, including 3.
