Characters

Here put it this way.

Player 1 creates a character with this kick arse background where he fought off super mutants and saved the princess of where-ever from the slavers. He has a mountain of high tech shit that would make the enclave cry. Now when the game has started he has the stats of a starting out character.

Player 2 comes along and says "yeah my guy just went through some guard training but got fired becuase he fell asleep and the bank was robbed. Now he is just wandering around the wastes looking for fun. He has got a pistol and 3 stims. He also has the stats of a starting out character when the game starts.

Now tell me, which of these two players has the more balanced character? Player 1 or Player 2?

depends on the RP doesnt it?

for a kickass uberlevel 'i eat barbed wire & piss napalm' RP player one would be suited

for a standard, normal RP player 2 would be best suited obviously

am i pissing you off yet?

anyhow, this is NOT a PnP RP. Most people live by the FO1 or FO2 character creation when it comes to primary stats (ST, AG,...), but for pure RP purposes thats useless (but it helps to balance out your character.
when it comes to skills and background there is noone keeping you from saying "i'm the most badass mofo in the world, i could take on the enclave with a patato knife and a pair of womens underwear", except the GameMaster.
the GM is the only person deciding on what goes and what doesn't (most GMs are open to debate and are quite democratic, but in the end it's his RP...)
needless to say most GMs dont allow ubercharacters... when i look on our current GMs i think Welsh is best at his job (no offense Zoe & Alba). he is strict when he needs to be and although we dont always have seen eye to eye (especially when i just started out), he's always fair and keeps his RPs perfectly balanced. Our other 2 GMs arent quite as strict.

hmz seems like i completely trailed off... what it comes down to is this: the kind of RP (and its characters) is decided by the GM and he will decide if something can be allowed or not.

no your not pissing me off at all.

What im saying is, the equipemnt doesnt match the characters stats. its like in d&d, would you give a 1st lvl fighter a +5 vorpal long sword just so he can fight tougher monsters? No, youd make the entire character stronger.

You cant use equipment to balance the playing field, its just doesnt make sense.

The characters equipement (and histroy for that matter) should reflect their stats.

there i finally said it, thats what this whole thing has been about.

if you want kick arse equipment, boost your guys stats to match and give him a background to reflect both.

Fithero incase you haven't noticed.....just about all the characters here are balanced with their equipment to their skills.

Many have inherited simple weaponry from family in their backstories.

Or they have the variable of having wandered the wastes for a few years where they can pretty much acquire any basic stuff.

That should explain it. Not everyone in the RP's here is being reborn from a vault into life, and many have long pasts out side with EASY ACCESS TO FIREARMS which would mean a better starting inventory instead of nothing in life after being thrown from an isolated steel prison with little to spare.

Also the reason the chosen was unarmed was because his village is isolated from the rest of civilization by a FREAKING CANYON. That explain it?

Yeah, a canyon with a BRIDGE CROSSING IT! not to mention they were right next to a town with guns/ammo and armor, and right next to that was the second biggest drug capital in the area.

But seeing as most of you seem to be missing my point, ill just quit now.

dude..........Fithero.............Arroyo is very Isolated and they choose to be that way.

They like being alone. Infact they only trader that visits them is Vic............and he gave the a shiny new CANTEEN. Good weapon eh.

The only gun in Arroyo is a revolver on the elders table in the beginning video and that was only there as an oversight by the dvelopers according to the fallout bible.

dude.......dont call me dude.

As i said in my last post, i quit the argument, end of story, not going to talk about it any more

All right, guys,

First, dont go too harsh on the newcomer. FitHero, welcome be.
As you see, our players are a bit exigent in terms of character background and sheets. And yet I agree withsome of your argument as well. Just for example, my character in Wasteland (one of the threads we have here) has no armor, and only a pistol a spear and a rifle, while characters that joined later started out with high tech and BOS armor and all. Do you think I liked that? I love technology and am playing a char that is not like me at all (since she is rough near the point of rudeness, lol) . And yet, I had already made a commitment of playing that character, as a roleplaying challenge. And it turned out to be really fun.

My point is: enjoy your character, dont be concerned if others have better equipment (for equipment can be lost, stolen, etc) - and if you think this does not happen in our game, think again. Both Welsh and me prize high not just realism, but plausibility.

And as was remarked, who approves the character sheets are the mods - we appreciate other players comments (as well as players should listen to comments, for we always can learn something when people make a constructive criticism), but the final word is from the mods.

It seems you gave up both sheets you posted before. I suggest we start again - you can post a character sheet to join New Day has Come (which is the thrad that is accepting new players at the moment and that has openness for many different characters: one can start in one of the cities or had come from one of the two open vaults mentioned so far).

Anyway. Dont take the comments the guys made as personal.

Cheers

Zoe

Its all good, im not p.o'ed or anything.

But i might take you up on that offer of joining, except im not sure about the games location or when the games will be played.

Ill start working on a charcter now, any idea on where i can pick up a set of the *actual* rules? Since when i was making the previous two i was actually wingin' it.

Later

I personally just wing it myself. I have found it is best to make slight alterations to a kind of basic character idea to make a more unique and realistic character. That's just me though.

Albatross, I agree. Creativity is always more spicy - specially when it comes to RPG.

Well, FitHero,

You can join A New Day has Come as a character who left the vault after the other characters left (about an hour ago) or you can be one of the survivors in the city. Those 2 options would make you in the game sooner.

Now, there are two lines already on the game: one in Portugal and one in France. Make your choice, put your new character sheet in the character sheet thread for the game and I will read it.

This thread is peculiar, because the players made their characters as close as possible to what they would be thenselves in a post nuclear world. Read the OOC for further information, or ask here.

Cheers

100% human now, i dont care, im keeping the avatar.

OOC: Is it too late to create a character and join a storyline? I dont want to feel like a prick just jumping in if the plot is going, but I enjoy rping a good deal (especially Fallout).

All Hail the Spork

Hiho Fireblade and greetings to you.

It is never to late to create a character and at some point or another an oppertunity to be introduced into one of the number of RP's currently in motion on these boards. Personally, I don't know much about some of the RP's going but i would be glad to read through a new character sheet.

active stories atm are:

1) Fallout Wasteland (V15 chapter)
2) Kilrick salvage
3) A new day has come

there is a fourth but it seems unactive atm

1) we are taking FO1 as a startingpoint and we play some stuff that happened BEFORE the VaultDweller passed through (we're the ones who are going to wreck V15 for example ;) )

2) Kilrick salvage takes us to NY. a squad of mercs is recruited to get something out of NY at any cost. what it is will have to be seen, but it is getting kinda complex so best you read up every chapter of it before joining up.

3) pretty much open to anyone, but characters have to be based off yourself. same age, same skills, same appearance and such... it is supposed to take place in Europe.

if you want to join anything, post in the OoC threads of the RP you want to join & get approved BEFORE starting to write in it please (it might seem as common sense, but some just dont get it)

Name: Ivan Aleksandrev Kerensky "Crazy Ivan"
Age: 25
Race: Human
Weight: 203 lb
Height: 6'1"
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Identifying features: A slave mark that has been crossed out with a knife to flesh (done by Ivan's own hand)

Occupation: Ex-slave, revolutionary, mildly deranged recovering alcoholic

History: Ivan has well earned the nickname of "Crazy". Born to a family of traders, he spent most of his youth wandering the wastelands with his family, never really tied to any one location. Skilled in the grittier necessities of survival, he learned from an early age to wield a gun and it is rumored he bagged a radscorp at age 12. Watching the various wheeling and dealings of his family, he learned the value of the spoken word and how to back it up with force. Unfortunately, his family didnt take the lesson to heart themselves when they tried to swindle their way out of a Raider checkpoint. Amidst the smoking wreckage and the blood stood the fierce teenager. Unfortunately a well aimed sap to the back of the head ended any major resistance as well as his full sanity.

Condemned to work as a thrall certainly wasnt Ivan's cup of tea, and he eventually staged a minor revolt among the uninspired slaves, narrowing escaping both the sale and the shotgun as he made a break for it to the wastelands. He reinvented himself as something of a traveling mystic, seeing himself as a grand liberator and equalizer, striking fear into the hearts of Raiders and misguided cities. Reality, however, wasnt as forgiving. Induced into paranoid delusions of grandeur, he worked as a mercenary for whatever scum would hire him, always justifying to himself that SOMEDAY he will free the Wastelands.

Life is cruel, but it is what you make of it. In between drinks, "Crazy" is quite lucid, and can offer a wealth of information as regards philosophy, wilderness survival, and firearm skill. He has managed to make a small nest of cash for himself and outfitted himself to survive, if not exactly thrive in the wastes. He searches eagerly for converts to his cause and who is to say he is the crazy one? After all, it IS a crazy world...

Personality: Generally good natured, especially when drunk. Waxes and wanes philosophical as if he had some grand wisdom to offer. When the topic switches to slavers or other wasteland scum, he quickly shifts to an almost frighteningly cold assassin.

Equipment:
Leather Armor
Hunting rifle w/scope
14mm pistol with laser sight
Fine hunting knife
Survival gear
Backpack
Food and water
Flask of vodka
Journal/notebook/The Holy Book (Depending when you ask him)

For Vault 15, drop the laser sight on the 14mm pistol. Otherwise, he's ok. You could bring him in as a member of the Vipers.

Alternatively he could be working with the Rovers and feeling that he's working the wrong side.

Whichever fits in the the storyline more plausibly. You asked me to hang back, so Ill wait I suppose till you make a reference to some "crazy guy" etc and then jump in?

For a time, I'd drop that 14mm Pistol or Hunting rifle, you can't have both... And try to remember, the wastes, weapons and ammo are scarce. Chances are you'll have sparce ammo.

Don't know, but I like the Russian already. Who knows, Maybe carib may know him from somewhere.
