Confederations Cup: USA 2 x 0 Spain, WTF?

Makenshi

Ahoy, ye salty dogs!
Unbelievable

I mean, Spain is well known (at least here in Brazil, hehe) for being "Strong as never, losing as always" in soccer. But to lose for the USA?

I wonder if this had any repercssion in the U, they don't care much for soccer, and I believe that's because no one likes suffering, but now...

Well, I guess we'll be the ones to beat them again anyway  (after we beat South Africa, that is)[/u]

Edited a phrase badly spelled.

Uh-huh. You do realise that prior to this loss Spain had a streak of 35 games in a row with no losses en a streak of 15 consecutive victories, a world record shared with, you guessed it, Brazil. They hadn't lost a match since late 2006.

Other than Spain being "well known" for "Strong as never, losing as always" (I honestly can't figure out what the hell that's supposed to mean, but I guess it's supposed to mean that some people have the delusion that the clearly best team in the world is not a good team?)...Brasil might be doing well in the qualifiers but I don't think it's quite time for Seleção Brasileira to beat its chest at Spain.

And you realise that that's the only reason (aside from the strange "let's cheer up the weakest team" habit we have) many here were cheering up US, thought no one had such hope.

But most brasileiros (me included) wanted Brazil x Spain in the finals, it would feel better.

We have the nasty habit of playing bad in the group games, and then kicking ass in the finals. Spain does the other way around: fast and furious in the group games, than delusion in the finals. That's what the expression is supposed to mean.

Currently, despite having 6 World Cups etc we are not the best and we know it. But we could beat Spain anyday, as the team now is well tuned and stuff. Or we could lose; soccer is pandora's box my friend, and that was proved again today.

Actually, no one here buys Spain being declared #1 by FIFA just because they got Euro (only this one, and no other before, is that true?). That's considering WE got the last America's Cup (Eurocup's equivalent) and others before, and have 6 world cups. Italy is the current world champion, they should deserve 1st place in the rank, as four World Cup's, including the last one, counts more than just the last Euro Cup.

But of course, you can convince me otherwise - you always do, precious :x

Our soccer team beat Spain? That's hilarious. I saw some brief coverage on ESPN this morning about how USA was about to play the best team in the world, and I was looking forward to seeing how bad the loss would be. It'll be a minor sports news event here for a day or two, but if the soccer team wants major coverage, they'll have to put together a string of underdog victories.

I mean, they have to compete with TO getting bounced off some reality show in the first round! Come on!

Soccer is money. Money is media. No media coverage, no money flowing, no improvements.

I know US kick ass in sports because of investments in formation during high-schools/universities/whatever you call, but that's not enough for soccer. It's a f***ing industry today, with players costing millions and all. I can't think of another sport with so much business involved.

If media doesn't involve, it will never skyrocket.

Hah! You serious? Here's a hint into how that's not so.
Most valuable sport franchises
1. Manchester United $1.8 - Premier League (football)
2. Dallas Cowboys $1.6 - National Football League (gridiron)
3. Washington Redskins $1.5 - NFL
4. New England Patriots $1.32 - NFL
5. New York Yankees $1.3 - Major League Baseball
6. Real Madrid $1.29 - La Liga (football)
7. Arsenal $1.2 - Premier League
8. New York Giants $1.18 - NFL
9. New York Jets $1.17 - NFL
10. Houston Texans $1.17 - NFL

's right. 6 out of the top 10 most valuable sport franchises are in the NFL. The collective worth of that league is $33.3 billion for an average worth of just short of a billion per team. And you worry about the commercialization of football? Hah!

Also, unlike football, NFL teams don't float on massive bubbles of operational debt. I'd be shocked if both the Premier League and La Liga completely collapse, sooner rather than later.

Never noticed. Such platitudes tend to be just excuses, tho', like the old "we play badly against bad teams" adage.

Saying "we have 6 world cups" at the drop of the hat just shows you're a bit insecure, dude.

I doubt it. But power to you.

Ugh. The FIFA world rankings are mostly bullshit, but before you criticize it, at least familiarize yourself with it. The World Cups are completely irrelevant, the world rankings only count back 4 years, so those stacks of World Cups are irrelevant.

Also, World Cups do count "as more" than the Euro Cup. The list uses a multiplier based on how important your match is. Friendlies count for one, FIFA and contintental cups (like Euro and American cups) for 2.5, matches in those cups themselves for 3.0, and World Cup matches for 4.0.

Moreso, a multiplier is applied based on age. Matches played in the last 12 months count for 1.0, in the 12 months before that for .75, in the 12 months before that for .5, in the 12 months before that for .25.

It also considers opponent strength, and regional strength (Europe and South America are strongest for 1.00 and 0.98 relatively, all other regions are 0.85)

So, based on that, the world rankings considers all matches you've played during the last 4 years, adjusts for how long ago they were, what the situation was and how tough your opponent was, and then gives you a point total. Spain didn't automatically default to #1 because they won the Eurocup, they defaulted there because they had to beat some of the best teams in the world to do so, and have consistently won since 2006.

That's why Spain has 1761 points, which is an awesome total followed in the distance by the Netherlands at 1442 points (Brasil being fifth with 1288 obviously).

Now there's no reason to give more value to this than needed. It's a nice ranking systems as systems go, but it's just a system, it doesn't predict who will win nor does it absolutely dictate who is the superior team. It's nice for sportsfans to get bogged down on it tho'.

Soccer fans always seem to want the game to take off here in the USA, but honestly, I just don't see it happening anytime soon. There's too much competition with American football, baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis, and auto racing. Those sports are all well established with decades of tradition. There just isn't much room for soccer to get big here.

What people tend to miss is that soccer is already pretty big in the US. It's just relatively small, but the attendance rate at MLS matches is roughly equal to that of a 2nd-tier football country in Europe (like the Netherlands, or France even). It has grown and is growing, and the more Mexicans you let in the more it'll grow.

The thing is that some people define success as it joining within a few years in the rank of the big four. Obviously, that's just stupid, it's not doing that. But it doesn't need to do that to be "big".

Excuses like "we have a tendency to do blah blah against blah blah" are irrelevant, and almost always nothing but simple randomness.

Also, the match wasn't that good from either side, the second goal was (as usual) a result of Spain looking to score, and Spain looked a lot more likely to equalise than the US did of getting in a second for most of the match.
Spain is undoubtedly a better team and would win the majority of matches over a long time. They just didn't win this time.

That said, no one really cares about the Confederations Cup.

Also, no one will think US Soccer is 'Big' until its teams get up to a level of play roughly equal with the European teams. That's not happening for a while, as all the good players and coaches keep moving to Europe. Europe will keep that prestige, and as long as it does it will keep the quality. The strong get stronger and the weak stay weak. The same thing happens with typical US sports like Baseball, Basketball and American Football.

I'm still just surprised the US has a professional soccer team... this is the first I've heard of it.

C'mon, of course we have a team. There's that one chick that takes her shirt off whenever she scores.

edit:

Soccer is kind of like the metric system in that way.
We actually do have some soccer tradition (Pele and Beckenbauer playing for Cosmos back in the day), it's just not in the mainstream's consciouness.

What, wait... I'm almost completely out of the loop every other year or so... but i'm sure someone would have have mentioned a soccer team...

Soccer will never catch on in the States until they stop with the rampant diving. It's fucking disgraceful. Jackie Chan don't take pratfalls like some of these dudes.

Soccer, sadly, doesn't have a decent enough foothold in North America for me to enjoy any decent soccer. I have to cheer for Toronto FC in the MLS.

I'd much rather watch the Premier League.

I'm not a huge fan of soccer, nor are many Americans these days.

However, it does make me giggle a bit to think of the USA, a sport in which most of its country's is more concerned about the Superbowl every year.

Guess you get lucky sometimes. Still, if Spain is as bad as they say, I guess it wasn't a real huge victory.

Meh. Whatever.

Spain are the current European champions of soccer. Probably one of the top teams in the world. As stated, with an exceptional track record over the last years.

Not anymore. Wow, shut out by America. That's embarrassing. That's like us losing to Viet Nam in basketball.

Meanwhile, America is completely oblivious. This ranks in between celebrity pro-am golf and midget wrestling in the American sports consciousness.

I'm told it's our biggest moment ever. What was it before, arriving at the stadium on time?

So do we actually play Brazil next?

I'm new at this, how do we trash talk them? :P

uhh... i knew we had a soccer team, but honestly, uhhh...

what channel do they even show soccer on? im guessing it would have to be an ESPN channel... like is it ESPN 5-6 that you have to pay extra for thats not on the basic 1-2, or extended 3-4???

uhh... i dont even watch football/basketball/golf/baseball... you want me to watch or care about soccer? yarite.

im pretty sure the US only has 1-3 soccer teams nation wide... if there is more than that, i would be shocked. shocked i tell you.

for fucks sake, not even womens basketball has really caught up to mainstream. sometimes people watch it, but its mostly to watch the jigglies bounce imo.
