He said it was a relic of the past, not that it was "losing". I'm curious though, in what way do you view religion as "winning"? Winning what, exactly? Winning the hearts and minds of men and women everywhere and enlightening them to the glory of god? Winning the fight to impose religious culture and it's desired behaviors on the world? I don't think anyone with any perspective could say that religion is doing anything except breaking even, no matter what way you frame the "battle".
