Dead Space : about creating an atmosphere

The controls are fine, disable vsync and the "floating mouse" problem goes away.

Keyboard movement is very responsive (This isn't your first survival horror game is it?).

I wouldn't recommend getting this over fallout 3 though, because despite being the superior game; it's very short.

So, is it that bad as far as controls are concerned ?

I agree with Nuka-Cola Dude on the controls. I'd really like to use the arrow keys for something else, but it's only a minor annoyance (I don't like WSAD). With the Nvidia control panel I can force a reliable Vsync (to prevent tearing) that doesn't cause the mouse lag that comes with trying to do it through the game. Pumping the mouse sensitivity up made aiming with the mouse quite fluid for me.

So buy the shitty game to be neck deep in it's shittiness longer than the enjoyment you'd get from a shorter superior one? I don't quite understand the logic on that one...

To anyone thinking of buying Dead Space I would like to give one bit of advice. Do not play the game on Easy, it will not be satisfying. I started the game on Medium, and aside from some intense moments so far... I really wish I had started on Hard.

If you can fix the mouse control, it'd be a lot better. I've already returned the game, unfortunately.

By the way, the vsync problem apparently only occurs in Vista. Everything's fine in XP. Tested it myself.

I disagree with Grey_Ghost about the save stations being too far apart. I was actually surprised to find them in abundance. I've only had the "fuck, I have to redo this now" moment once or twice, and then there wasn't much to redo anyway.

The controls are quite okay, at least if you have a high framerate. Mine is constantly 60-70, but I can imagine aiming is more difficult when you're in the 20-30 range.

I tried to play this yesterday.

Max details 60 fps. BUT THE FOV IS SO FUCKING SMALL IT MAKE MY HEAD EXPLODE!

I NEVER had any problem playing ANY fps made in the last 15 years. Never had motion sickness. Hell, I don't have it here either. But the FOV is still so fucking small, with character taking up half of the screen (eaggerating, but not much), its simply horrible. It looks like an interesting scifi game, but I dunno if I can get past this ultrazoomed in vision. Its the reason I could not play Halo 2 (yes, I kinda liked the first one on PC, sue me).

Yeah...It's a bug which occurs on 4:3 screens ( and that's what I have ). Looks like you're playing the game through a sniper scope, right ? As much as I'd like to have this game, I've read too much about it being a bad port so I'm gonna pass on it or take it on the 360, second hand or bargain bin. Too bad, I was really looking forward to it.

Wut? It's an excellent port. While most textures aren't high-res, it's optimized, the controls are really responsive and it never feels like a console game.

Well, not being able to use the mouse in the inventory, having to disable V-Synch because of mouse latency and ESPECIALLY reduced FOV on 4:3 screens sounds like a shitty port to me.

Minor problem. You don't access the inventory often.

I never use V-sync, so it's not a problem.

The FOV isn't a big deal. I don't have *any* problems with it.

Well it's maybe because you don't have that problem ! If you can see your character entirely, I mean including his entire left arm then you're good. If the screen eats a bit of your character then it means that you're playing on a reduced FOV. It looks like you're playing the game through a sniper's scope = makes you wanna throw up real fast. I don't have the game so I can't tell but I sure won't pick it because I have seen this problem on Half Life 2 on a friend's computer when it was released four years ago and it sure makes you wanna throw up after a while. Won't take the risk of buying it until there's a patch.

Wut? I have the reduced FOV and have no problems. Not a sniper scope by any means.

Like I said, my problem with the save system is mainly when the game crashes. Though it's also a pain when I want to quit the game, but I have to wait till I find a save point.

Actually you can use the mouse in the inventory, but it's much easier to use the keyboard imho.

The FOV is small, but I'm guessing it's supposed to be that way to create a sense of claustrophobia. Here's what it looks like for me.
I play at 1920x1200 and your pics actually look like you've got a larger FOV then I do.

I tried to play it yesterday in 1152*864, and the FOV was so small it made me sick. Really zoomed in and fugly, I am waiting for some sort of hack...can not and will not play it like this. So it comes down to individual tastes.

I've had the chance to play it for three or four hours on the Xbox360 today...GOD I LOVE THIS GAME. Will probably buy it on the 360 unless I can try a Pc version before !

One thing particulary struck me as incredible : the work on sound effects and ambiance. They are absolutely perfect. By far the best work I've heard in that field so far.

I read the comics, and watched some of the trailers, and so far it looks like an interesting horror game (although not very original plot). Kinda like Doom 3, but with scares other than 'creepy noise' or 'imp jumps out of door' :P .

I watched the trailer and was impressed that the developers new so much about the philosophy of scaring and terror (of course, there is always more to learn and be applied, especially in video games). One thing that troubled me a bit was the apparent lack in aesthetic variety among the game's monsters, and I'm a bit picky on this. So I am asking those here that have been playing the game - is there more visual variety to the monsters? Or are they all flesh colored humanoids, little jumpers, and tentacles?

Also does the setting mix things up a bit? Obviously it's all set on a spacecraft, but is there variety to the locations within? (i.e. different lighting, materials/textures, some locations being homey while others including hydroponic gardens - and not just gardens in dimly lit, metal rooms).

Monsters all look a bit alike ( à la The Thing ) but there are definitely different kinds of them. I especially love the evil babies with tentacles jumping out of their backs, they are nasty.

As regards the setting, besides corridors, there is definitely a variety and most rooms seem to have a function, unlike in Doom 3 where only some of the rooms seemed to have a use before the incident.

I recently beat this game, was actually heavily impressed. The storyline came across to me as actually better than most of the latest survival horror games.
